"Legato" is an Italian word meaning tied or bound. In music, it involves playing a series of notes in a smooth and connected manner, so that no perceptive interruption between the notes is heard.
Stringed instrument players can achieve legato by playing several notes in a continuous movement without changing the direction of the bow. Singers and wind players achieve legato by doing the same, with one continuous breath.
