When there is a need to write notes which are higher or lower than the notes which can be included in the five-line staff,small horizental lines are used above or below the staff to indicate these pitches. When the use of too many ledger lines is needed the composers usually prefer to use different clefs,so that the notes fall inside the staff. Ledger lines are also called Leger Lines.
