[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][BULL] The College is part of University of Oxford and students are [PARA]entitled to use its facilities.[EBOLD][PARA]St John's is 800 yards from Carfax. Its 15th, 17th and 18th [PARA]century buildings are arranged around 6 quads for the public [PARA]gaze with [ITAL]the largest garden in Oxford[EITAL], [ITAL]whilst, like poor relations, [PARA]the modern additions are kept wisely out of sight. The only [PARA]sounds during the day are the busy jottings, the page flicking or [PARA]the pencil chewing of diligent students. At night, though, students[PARA]remove their thinking caps, let their hair down and get down to the[PARA]bar, already full of the women rowers (alias 'The Sirens'). Apart [PARA]from the bar, however, entertainments aren't the most inspiring [PARA](except the twice-termly guest dinners), although sport and [PARA]drama have picked up lately. [EITAL][PARA][ITAL] [EITAL][PARA]Theatre for St John's Mummers; student bands in Beehive [PARA]Basement (cap 80), Prestwich Room (40) and Larkin Room (40); [PARA]2 bops a term; balls every 3 years. 'Bullsheet' mag twice yearly. [PARA]Library (67,000 books); 14 computers; Anglican chapel. Squash [PARA]courts; 10 acres of sports fields 1 mile. Everyone lives in ([ITAL]high [PARA]standard[EITAL]); most eat in hall once a day; formal hall daily; [ITAL][PARA]reasonable [EITAL]self catering. Nurse. [ITAL]Serious[EITAL] money available for [PARA]those who need/deserve it.[HDNG]FAMOUS ALUMNI:[EHDNG][PARA]Sir Kingsley Amis (writer); Tony Blair MP (Lab); Robert Graves [PARA](former poet laureate); Lord Holme (Lib Dem peer); Philip Larkin [PARA](poet); John Wain (writer).
