[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]If, when you think of Liverpool, you think of 'Bread', The Beatles and Beth Jordache, you're not far wrong. Of course, one of the Beatles is dead (two, if you count Stu), but Liverpool lives on as one of Britain's youth culture capitals. It has always taken an independent stand politically, and it's rich with culture and art, but it's more exciting just strolling the streets.[EITAL] The Mersey cuts through the city, dividing it from the Wirral and skirting the jumble of streets, full of art-deco and post-industrialist architecture. Liverpool is unique, the seaway for the North West. Considering how big it is (544,861 people), [ITAL]it seems odd that it's so close to Manchester [EITAL](28 miles) - but with 2 [ITAL]great [EITAL]cities for the price of 1, who's complaining?[PARA]Liverpool's 1st university (joined in 1992 by [ULNE]Liverpool John Moores University[EULNE],) is the original 'redbrick' university. The word was coined to describe the University's Victoria Building on Brownlow Hill. Many of the other buildings are redbrick too but others are more modern (60s and 70s), based on a 100-acre site (big for an inner city campus) in the Mount Pleasant area of town.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Liverpool University is down to earth, unpretentious and the highly motivated students enjoy good relations with the local community. Not bad for starters from a town few respect for anything but its pop bands and football teams. But Scousers - by the way, every myth about their sense of humour is true - and the University students defend their city to the hilt. It's hard not to have a good time in Liverpool and one of its best features is that, while Oxbridge students can be confident that anywhere they go people will have heard of their universities, Liverpool students can be confident that people will have heard of the Beatles. One student we know was treated like royalty in Papua New Guinea when he told them he studied near the birth place of the Fab Four.[EITAL][PARA][PARA][ITAL][HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][ITAL][STAT][BULL] Population: 448,300 [BULL] London: 189 miles [BULL] Manchester: 28 miles[ESTAT][EITAL][PARA]Liverpool was once a prosperous merchant town, doing deals on the docks, touting for trade inland. It still bears the legacy of former times with grand Victorian houses and old streets built for carriages, such as Princes Road lined with tall houses, but it's seen some rough times, and some areas, such as Toxteth, have become notorious. But it's far from all gloom and doom: the Albert Dock development is just one part of a face-lift programme [ITAL]that makes Michael Jackson's surgery look slight by comparison[EITAL]. [ITAL]The richness and contrast of architectural styles is being revitalised and is beginning to reflect the spirit of the people, a spirit that never dwindled.[EITAL] There are nightclubs everywhere [ITAL]and bohemian bustle is bubbling away. [EITAL]Supermarkets, shops and markets abound, and there's more for tourists to do than visit Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. There are the Liverpool Museum, the Museum of Labour History, the Walker Art Gallery (the largest art collection in the UK outside London), the Tate Gallery in Albert Dock and the University's own art gallery on campus.[HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains: [EBOLD]Main-line links with many destinations including London Euston (2:40hrs, 1/hr), Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Birmingham.[PARA][BOLD]Coaches: [EBOLD]National Express to most destinations including London (ú16.00, 4:05hrs, 5/day), Birmingham (ú6.50, 2:20hrs, 15/day) and Manchester (ú3.50, 0:50, 18/day).[PARA][BOLD]Car: [EBOLD]M53, M56, M57, M58 and M62 (good for North West and Wales).[PARA][BOLD]Air: [EBOLD]Flights inland and to Belfast and Dublin from Liverpool Airport, 7 miles from the city centre.[PARA][BOLD]Ferries: [EBOLD]This is the main port for Belfast and there are other regular ferries to Ireland.
