Of course, one of the [PARA]Beatles is dead (two, if you count Stu), but Liverpool lives on as [PARA]one of Britain's youth culture capitals. It has always taken an [PARA]independent stand politically, and it's rich with culture and art, but [PARA]it's more exciting just strolling the streets.[EITAL] The Mersey cuts [PARA]through the city, dividing it from the Wirral and skirting the jumble [PARA]of streets, full of art-deco and post-industrialist architecture. [PARA]Liverpool is unique, the seaway for the North West. Considering [PARA]how big it is (544,861 people), [ITAL]it seems odd that it's so close to [PARA]Manchester [EITAL](28 miles) - but with 2 [ITAL]great [EITAL]cities for the price of 1, [PARA]who's complaining?[PARA]Liverpool's 1st university (joined in 1992 by [ULNE]Liverpool John Moores [PARA]University[EULNE],) is the original 'redbrick' university. The word was [PARA]coined to describe the University's Victoria Building on Brownlow [PARA]Hill. Many of the other buildings are redbrick too but others are [PARA]more modern (60s and 70s), based on a 100-acre site (big for an [PARA]inner city campus) in the Mount Pleasant area of town.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Liverpool University is down to earth, unpretentious and the highly[PARA]motivated students enjoy good relations with the local community.[PARA]Not bad for starters from a town few respect for anything but its [PARA]pop bands and football teams. But Scousers - by the way, every [PARA]myth about their sense of humour is true - and the University [PARA]students defend their city to the hilt. It's hard not to have a good [PARA]time in Liverpool and one of its best features is that, while [PARA]Oxbridge students can be confident that anywhere they go [PARA]people will have heard of their universities, Liverpool students can [PARA]be confident that people will have heard of the Beatles. It still bears the legacy of [PARA]former times with grand Victorian houses and old streets built for[PARA]carriages, such as Princes Road lined with tall houses, but it's [PARA]seen some rough times, and some areas, such as Toxteth, have [PARA]become notorious. But it's far from all gloom and doom: the [PARA]Albert Dock development is just one part of a face-lift [PARA]programme [ITAL]that makes Michael Jackson's surgery look slight by [PARA]comparison[EITAL]. [ITAL]The richness and contrast of architectural styles is [PARA]being revitalised and is beginning to reflect the spirit of the people,[PARA]a spirit that never dwindled.[EITAL] There are nightclubs everywhere [ITAL]and[PARA]bohemian bustle is bubbling away. [EITAL]Supermarkets, shops and [PARA]markets abound, and there's more for tourists to do than visit [PARA]Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.
