The rest are mostly 'home students', ie.[PARA]they live either with their parents or in their own homes. The halls[PARA]of residence (all catered except Maclay Hall) are all within 20 [PARA]minutes walking distance of the campus, with the exception of [PARA]Wolfson Hall, 3 miles away, which has a University-run shuttle [PARA]bus. There are 11 Student Houses, housing between 8 and 28 [PARA]students in self-catering places. 60% of these hall and house [PARA]places are shared (ie. most 1st years). There are 1,875 places in [PARA]flats which the University rents to students on a private basis but [PARA]on [ITAL]favourable [EITAL]terms (housing 1st years and about 16% of the 3rd [PARA]and 4th years). There are also 70 flats for couples (140 places) [PARA]and, just opened, a new student village (1,100 places) with a shop [PARA]15 minutes walk from the campus (downhill) and 25 minutes [PARA]back (uphill). [ITAL]All very posh. [EITAL][PARA][BOLD]Car parking:[EBOLD] Parking for residents only is limited but adequate. The best places are the[PARA]West End and South Side, pleasant areas near enough to roll out[PARA]of bed into classes, but anywhere on the underground line will do.[PARA]It's possible to get good value in suburban tenement flats. [PARA]Glasgow has its rough areas, such as the Gorbals, which should [PARA]be avoided like a 10lb fist.
