[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA]The River Exe flows out into the English Channel in a wide estuary with the golden, sandy beaches of south Devon all round. The river springs inland amidst the windy wilds of Exmoor, in the heart of the West Country. 9 miles from the coast, where the river starts to widen, is Exeter, not a big city, [ITAL]but a pretty one[EITAL]. Although the city was almost wiped out by a single night's bombing in World War II, the Luftwaffe didn't manage to destroy any major landmarks, such as the ancient cathedral (built in 1050), the city walls (built by the Romans) or the Guild Hall. Among the other things not destroyed by bombing was the University - mainly because it wasn't built until 1955. Some of the University's buildings date from the last century though, but most were built in the 50s and 60s and are low-rise blocks in light stone. The University is about a mile from the city centre in a particularly hilly and green area. [ITAL]The setting is stunning, perfect for both town and country,[EITAL] with 2 streams and ponds dotted about the campus. There are 2 other sites. St Luke's, 1 mile away and, 1/2 mile from the city centre, is the School of Education - the 2nd largest in the country. As of August 1993, the Camborne School of Mines in Redruth, Cornwall has become part of the University.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Get out those green Hunter wellies, the Barbour jacket and the string of pearls - Exeter is renowned as Sloane country and a popular option for those who can't get into Oxbridge (without having quite the academic reputation of other Oxbridge Reject haunts like Bristol and Durham). However, although the proportion of public school students is high, only a minority are true blue OK Yahs - although you'd never guess from the noise they make. There are plenty of real people as well and the gorgeous setting is more than enough compensation for the odd bit of social friction. Relations with the locals can be a bit frosty, even though they tend to call complete strangers 'my lover'.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]St Luke's: [EBOLD]Although it's only a mile from the main campus, opposite the police station, the Education site feels a bit like a separate institution and there's a constant battle to include the 'Lukies' in Guild activities. St Luke's Hall can house 330 students.[PARA][BOLD]Camborne School of Mines:[EBOLD] Camborne covers courses like geology, engineering and so on. It is 87 miles from Exeter in the [ITAL]pretty [EITAL]countryside near Cambourne and Redruth and teaches 350 students in purpose-built blocks thrown up in the mid 70s. The students have no practical connection with Exeter or the University's main site. They have their own Student Club with a bar and [ITAL]limited [EITAL]social and sporting facilities. There is accommodation for 53 students, and plenty of rented places nearby.[HDNG]THE CITY:[EHDNG][PARA][STAT][BULL] Population: 101,100 [BULL] London: 170miles [BULL] Bristol: 69miles [BULL] Plymouth: 46miles[ESTAT][PARA][ITAL]Exeter is quaint and quiet and[EITAL], according to the EC, has the highest quality of life of any English city. In part, this must be due to the ample selection of high street shops, supermarkets and banks, and to the numerous wholesome cafes and [ITAL]cute little earthy[EITAL] shops. Tourist attractions include the ancient cathedral, the historic Guild Hall, and various museums, including the Maritime Museum and the Royal Albert Museum and Art Gallery, with its legendary giraffe.[HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] Exeter St Davids Station is 1/2 mile from the University.
