[HDNG]INTRODUCTION:[EHDNG][PARA]The River Exe flows out into the English Channel in a wide [PARA]estuary with the golden, sandy beaches of south Devon all round.[PARA]The river springs inland amidst the windy wilds of Exmoor, in the [PARA]heart of the West Country. 9 miles from the coast, where the [PARA]river starts to widen, is Exeter, not a big city, [ITAL]but a pretty one[EITAL]. [PARA]Although the city was almost wiped out by a single night's [PARA]bombing in World War II, the Luftwaffe didn't manage to destroy [PARA]any major landmarks, such as the ancient cathedral (built in [PARA]1050), the city walls (built by the Romans) or the Guild Hall. [PARA]Among the other things not destroyed by bombing was the [PARA]University - mainly because it wasn't built until 1955. Some of the [PARA]University's buildings date from the last century though, but most [PARA]were built in the 50s and 60s and are low-rise blocks in light [PARA]stone. The University is about a mile from the city centre in a [PARA]particularly hilly and green area. [ITAL]The setting is stunning, perfect [PARA]for both town and country,[EITAL] with 2 streams and ponds dotted [PARA]about the campus. There are 2 other sites. St Luke's, 1 mile [PARA]away and, 1/2 mile from the city centre, is the School of [PARA]Education - the 2nd largest in the country. As of August 1993, [PARA]the Camborne School of Mines in Redruth, Cornwall has become[PARA]part of the University.[HDNG]ATMOSPHERE:[EHDNG][PARA][ITAL]Get out those green Hunter wellies, the Barbour jacket and the [PARA]string of pearls - Exeter is renowned as Sloane country and a [PARA]popular option for those who can't get into Oxbridge (without [PARA]having quite the academic reputation of other Oxbridge Reject [PARA]haunts like Bristol and Durham). However, although the [PARA]proportion of public school students is high, only a minority are [PARA]true blue OK Yahs - although you'd never guess from the noise [PARA]they make. There are plenty of real people as well and the [PARA]gorgeous setting is more than enough compensation for the odd [PARA]bit of social friction. Relations with the locals can be a bit frosty, [PARA]even though they tend to call complete strangers 'my lover'.[EITAL][ITAL][HDNG]THE SITES:[EHDNG][EITAL][PARA][BOLD]St Luke's: [EBOLD]Although it's only a mile from the main campus, [PARA]opposite the police station, the Education site feels a bit like a [PARA]separate institution and there's a constant battle to include the [PARA]'Lukies' in Guild activities. St Luke's Hall can house 330 students.[PARA][BOLD]Camborne School of Mines:[EBOLD] Camborne covers courses like [PARA]geology, engineering and so on. It is 87 miles from Exeter in the [ITAL][PARA]pretty [EITAL]countryside near Cambourne and Redruth and teaches [PARA]350 students in purpose-built blocks thrown up in the mid 70s. [PARA]The students have no practical connection with Exeter or the [PARA]University's main site. They have their own Student Club with a [PARA]bar and [ITAL]limited [EITAL]social and sporting facilities. Tourist attractions include the ancient cathedral, [PARA]the historic Guild Hall, and various museums, including the [PARA]Maritime Museum and the Royal Albert Museum and Art Gallery,[PARA]with its legendary giraffe.[HDNG]TRAVEL:[EHDNG][PARA][BOLD]Trains:[EBOLD] Exeter St Davids Station is 1/2 mile from the University.
