Transcription: The materials exposure experiment helped shuttle engineers test and develop new spacecraft construction materials. The test included more than 350 experimental construction materials which were mounted on the shuttle's remote manipulator arm and exposed to the harsh conditions of space. During the 30 hour long exposure period, the samples were photographed and electrically monitored in order to record the stages of space induced erosion. The exposed samples were returned to Earth, where researchers analyze the findings in order to determine which materials were best suited for spacecraft use.
