Transcription: The solid surface combustion experiment was developed to examine the behavior of fire in zero gravity, an important issue in planning adequate safety procedures for future shuttle missions. To safely conduct the combustion experiment aboard the shuttle, astronauts burned small pieces of ashless paper inside specially modified glass containers. These containers allowed the astronauts to control the amount of airflow, thereby replicating the gravity-driven airflows of an Earth environment.
