If you are searching for
a specific object, a widening
spiral search method can be
used. In the diagram, if you
started at the small square:
walk 20 paces in one
direction, turn 90 degrees,
walk 20 paces, turn 90 degrees
walk 40 paces. Continue to
walk in this pattern, adding
20 paces every second turn. Of
course, the distance you walk
before your first turn can be
anything, depending on the
size of your objective, how
far you can see, and the
terrain.
