Quicken 6 Made Easy
Book Review by Greg Smith, MBUG Member
David Campbell, chairman of the Accounting Department at Case
Western Reserve University, and Mary Campbell, co-author of three
earlier editions of Quicken Made Easy, have teamed up again to give
Q6 users a step by step workbook for learning the many features of
Intuit's newest version of the easy to use Quicken for DOS.
This latest text has 478 pages and costs $19.95 from
Osborne/McGraw-Hill. It's organized into three sections: Quick
Start, Home Applications, and Business Applications. Also included
is an appendix with a glossary of useful financial terms.
Quick Start takes you through an overview of Quicken including
working with Quicken's register, setting up and printing reports,
reconciling the bank account and writing and printing checks.
The meat of the text is the section on Home Applications as that's
where Quicken really shines. It's all here from dealing with the
details of transactions to budgeting, organizing for tax
information, figuring net worth and creating custom reports.
The book's last section deals with Business Applications including
special setup needs, payroll transactions and sections on business
budgeting and tax information.
Each of the sections is laid out in an eye appealing format with
big page and section numbers. Illustrations include screen views,
report printouts and examples. Subject headings are easy to follow.
The text makes heavy use of exercises similar to those you would
expect to find in a classroom setting. But even without the
teacher, you'll find easy going step by step instructions on most
of the features necessary to get you up and running. The price
you'll pay, however is a significant investment of your time and
the discipline to stick with the lessons.
What the text doesn't tell you though, is that Q6 has many built-in
help features including tutorials and assistants which help users
navigate the system and set up files, and accounts.
