The Craft of C: Take Charge Programming
Book Review by Jim Robeson
Herbert Schildt is at it again. This prolific author of C "how-to"
books has teamed up with Osborne/McGraw-Hill and published a new
book called "The Craft of C: Take Charge Programming".
Actually a revised edition of the original "Born to Code in C",
this book is said to be for "any and all C programmers". But it
also goes on to say "much of the code in this book is fairly
sophisticated". Getting right down to it, I wouldn't recommend
this book as a first-book for the pure beginning programmer. But
if you are already into C or are an experienced programmer and own
a copy of Kernighan and Ritchie's The C Programming Language then
this book can be a valuable addition to your bookshelf.
The book is oriented towards helping the reader actually DO things
in C, it is chock full of excellent examples that are worked into
full blown programs. The chapter headings display the utilitarian
bent of the book: A C Interpreter, Icon-Based Interfaces,
Supercharging TSRs, A Multitasking Kernal for DOS, A Screen-Editor
Subsystem, A Database Subsystem, Creating Custom Character Fonts,
Object Animation and Mouse Interfacing, Fancy Printer Control.
