WHY FITNESSMATE?
Are you interested in cultivating good health... feeling and looking good?
Are you convinced that by being the best that you can be that the 'quality'
of your life will also be the best that it can be? Perhaps you have made a
commitment to pursue good health by exercising regularly. Maybe you are
doing your best to keep an eye on your waistline by eating right and not
overeating or eating too much 'junk food?' Maybe you have tried to do these
'right things' and at times have had the feeling that nothing is happening.
You might have said, 'I have been good yet I can see no change for the
better.' Or, you might have said, 'No matter how hard I try I can't seem
to make any progress toward my goals.'
Change is sometimes a slow moving process and when it is, it can be very
difficult to detect. In order to know how you are doing in your pursuit
of change you have got to be able to see the changes taking place. Now
there is a tool available that can help open your eyes to these often times
hard to see changes taking place. One that can help you to appreciate
whether or not your activity is actually working as you had planned, and
whether your committment to reach your fitness performance goals is going
to meet your schedule demands. This appreciation in turn will serve to
reassure you to keep your chin up and keep going, to make some adjustments,
or to better plan your future activities. In any case it will open your
eyes to the changing situation and give you more control over it.
This tool is called "FitnessMate," and it can make a big difference for
you, your team, group, or club.
OVERVIEW
Undertaking a program of strenuous exercise is an individual decision
usually made in excellent health after consulting with a personal physician.
No attempt to prescribe activity is made and none should be assumed by the
user of this software. If you have a chronic illness such as heart disease,
hypertension, or depression, your illness, combined with certain medications
and training might make strenuous exercise dangerous. You should discuss
your plans for undertaking a program of strenuous exercise with your
personal physician, and be certain that he / she approves before beginning
the program. Once you begin your program, there is a certain amount of risk
that you are assuming... so be especially careful. It is a wise person that
moderates their program of regular exercise to achieve long term benefit and
not overnight success.
Since this is a premier release of FitnessMate, public acceptance and
user support will determine the amount of attention that Avocation
Technologies in association with FitnessMate's author, William Joseph
Johnson, will devote to it's development. Your support makes all the
difference. We think the software has great potential and would like to
see it grow. A 'significant' amount of effort has allready been invested
in the creation and distribution of FitnessMate and both, Avocation
Technologies and FitnessMate's author William Joseph Johnson, pledge to
continue to develop FitnessMate if there is a popular demand for it.
Please take responsibility for using this program if you choose to do so.
FEATURES
. VGA graphics user interface which defaults to 640x480x16 custom
colors makes this a 'good looking' program with a 'high resolution'
display, and allows for precision graphing.
. Extremely easy and friendly 'do-next-to-nothing' installation.
. Pull down window menu-driven, and very easy to use intuitive, mouse
or cursor driven, keyboard 'point and shoot' type interface.
. Bitstream (tm) bitmapped fonts utilized throughout the entirety
of the program. Never a 25x80 text mode display.
. Supports multiple users and multiple sports in an endless timeframe
delimited by years.
. Quick and easy access to user accounts past and present allows
you to look into the present situation, and reflect back on past
years and past performances.
. Quick and easy virtually fool-proof data entry and verification
lets you get in and out fast and trouble free.
. A minimum of data entered gives a maximum of information output.
. Handy conversion utilities make dealing with distances a breeze.
. On line ability to maintain master user file.
. Screen color configurations can be customized to your liking and
saved as the programs default colors.
. Linear and Bar graphing capabilities.
. Intelligent determination of system hardware and memory status
takes much of the guesswork out of setting up and provides for
virtually universal compatibility with video hardware.
. Written in FORTRAN (the language of formula translation and
scientific application) C language and ASSEMBLER to provide
flexibility of function and performance.
. Low available conventional RAM memory requirements. Runs in only
512K of memory space.
. EGA and CGA graphics and some VGA monochrome graphics adapters are
supported.
. Math coprocessor detection and emulation for those without one
installed. If one is detected it is used instead of being
emulated. Registered users may request the non-emulating math
coprocessor version which requires the presence of the hardware.
. Intelligently determines parameters based on the sport allowing
for the intrinsic differences in the different linear sports
activities.
. Intelligent graphing algorithms that actually think for themselves
and display your data in the most optimum fashion.
. Individual (single) sport and Global (all) sports reporting and
output.
. Reports can be sent to screen, printer, or disk file.
. Ability to view and to print reports from the past as well as the
present.

technical support.
Operators of electronic bulletin boards (Sysops) are encouraged to post
FitnessMate for downloading by their users.
FitnessMate may be uploaded to and downloaded from commercial systems such
as CompuServe, the Source, and others, as long as the only charge paid by
the subscriber is for on-line time and there is no charge for the
program. Those copying, sharing, and / or electronically transmitting
the program are required not to delete or modify the copyright notice
and restrictive notices from the program or documentation; anyone doing
so will be treated as a contributory copyright violator.
If you are passing this program on to others, uploading it to a
bulletin board system, or including it in a users group library, do not
separate the files contained in the distribution archive - pass the
entire archive on to the intended party. This ensures that those who
receive the program will have all the correct configuration utilities
and documentation necessary to get FitnessMate up and running quickly. A
listing of what files you should have and the purpose of each is listed
later in this manual.
The FitnessMate documentation and program files may not be modified by users.
The program may not be separated from the documentation when distributed.
Printed or Photocopied ("Xeroxed") copies of the FitnessMate documentation

PUBLIC DOMAIN AND SHAREWARE LIBRARIES
Distributors of "public domain" or user-supported software libraries
must obtain written permission to distribute copies of FitnessMate. No one
may use FitnessMate as a promotion for any commercial venture or as an
enticement for the user to pay for any program, product, or service
unless they have received the express written permission from Avocation
Technologies.
In order to distribute FitnessMate, a dealer or disk vendor must comply
with the following conditions:
1.) You must obtain written permission from Avocation Technologies to
distribute FitnessMate. Please use the vendor application supplied
in the program file 'VENDOR.TXT'. If you receive no reply,
write again. Silence does NOT constitute permission, and you
may NOT distribute "pending" receipt of permission.
2.) A maximum disk fee of $10.00 as set by Avocation Technologies
in the vendor contract must not be exceeded. FitnessMate may not
be included on any disk sold for more than this maximum. Major
CD-ROM or optical disk libraries are exempt from this restriction,
provided that they have Avocation Technologies permission to
distribute FitnessMate.
3.) Vendors may not modify or delete ANY files on the disk.
Vendors may add a "GO" program, and/or a reasonable number of
small text files designed to assist or provide a service to
the user, but these added files must be easily identifiable
and end-users must be allowed to delete the added files.
4.) Vendors must make a reasonable effort to distribute only the
most recent versions of FitnessMate. All vendors who have
requested and received written permission to distribute
FitnessMate will receive new MAJOR releases as they are issued.
VENDORS MUST COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES.
Vendors must make an attempt to educate users on the nature of Shareware.
Catalogs, advertisements, order forms, and all disks sold should contain
wording describing the nature of shareware, and should explicitly state
that no part of disk sale revenues are paid to the programs' authors. When
vendor catalogs or advertisements carry both Shareware and PD programs,
the Shareware programs must be differentiated from the public domain
programs in some way (in the description, with an asterisk, by listing
the registration fee, etc;).

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
. IBM PC/XT/AT or PS/2 or true IBM compatible computer.
. DOS versions greater than 2.0.
. At least one high capacity floppy disk drive (Hard Drive Usage is Highly
Recommended). You will need six hundred kilobytes of free disk space.
. 512K of available conventional RAM memory. FitnessMate will attempt to
run in borderline available memory situations by using fewer fonts and
reallocating font memory as the situation necessitates. Ultimately in
the most extreme borderline available memory situations, this results in
the program using 'Courier' font only, and in place of all others.
. VGA, EGA, or CGA video hardware.

FITNESSMATE QUIK START
1.) Use PKUNZIP.EXE to extract the FitnessMate archive onto a
floppy disk, any size will do. No special PKUNZIP 'switches'
are required.
2.) To set up the program on your HARD DISK... (you will need about
six hundred and fifty kilobytes of free space.)
TYPE 'INSTALL' followed by the letter designation of the floppy
drive your installing FROM and the letter designation of the hard
drive your installing TO. FOR EXAMPLE: INSTALL A C
(A being the floppy and C the hard drive.) That's all there is to it.
DEFAULT PROGRAM SETUP FOR REGISTERED USERS
3.) If you are a REGISTERED USER UPGRADING from a previous version and
you have used the default directory (FMATE) you will get a 'file
exists overwrite? Y/N' message for each file as the self extracting
archive executes. Answer YES (keep hitting the Y key) for all
of the files until the old have all been overwritten by the new.
Since upgrades have been made to the structure and method FitnessMate
uses to access it's data files, the data files you have allready
created will need to be changed to match the current configuration.
I cannot stress how important it is to make a backup copy (or two) of
these difficult to recreate data files. If you have not allready done
this STOP and do it now! The data files of course, are those files
with names and the extension '.DAT' for example 'WILJOHNS.DAT' is mine.
You have been provided a FitnessMate file conversion utility called
'UPDATE.EXE' to do the necessary conversion. Simply run it once by
typing 'update' from your FitnessMate directory and it automatically
upgrades all the data files that are present then it self destructs.
It is only meant to be run once and running it twice will ruin the
data files. That is the reason it deletes itself. Do not run it a
second time over your data files or they will be gone forever. BEFORE
running this conversion utility, make double sure that you have made
a backup copy of your data files. The data files of course, are those
files with names and the extension '.DAT' for example 'WILJOHNS.DAT'
is mine. AFTER running the utility start up the new version and do
a quick check to make sure everything is ok. View your averages and
the statistical mean to make sure things are ok and not coming up as
zero. Do a couple of graphs to see that the program is happy with
your new data files. I have checked this very thoroughly and verified
that it works. However, I am only human and that is why I am asking
you to make the quick double check!
See the 'What's new!' section in the program documentation file
'Fitness.doc' for more information. This FitnessMate file conversion
utility called 'UPDATE.EXE' is copyright 1992 by William Joseph Johnson
all rights reserved and is of course, only available to REGISTERED USERS.
This upgrade process WILL NOT HARM or do anything to your program
configuration or DATA files and is absolutely positively necessary
to use the outstanding new release!
FitnessMate will function normally and all of your DATA files etc;
will remain intact and will be modified to conform to the new format
which enhances performance. Otherwise everything will be as it was
prior to the upgrade only you will be using the new version.
DEFAULT PROGRAM SETUP FOR SHAREWARE VERSION
If you are evaluating the SHAREWARE VERSION and UPGRADING from a
previous version and you have used the default directory (FMATE) you
will get a 'file exists overwrite? Y/N' message for each file as the
self extracting archive executes. Answer YES (keep hitting the Y key)
for all (thirty) of the files until the old have all been overwritten
by the new.
Since upgrades have been made to the structure and method FitnessMate
uses to access it's data files, the data files you have allready
created will no longer work. The data files of course, are those files
with names and the extension '.DAT' for example 'WILJOHNS.DAT' is mine.
You may evaluate the new version for thirty days.
The FitnessMate file conversion utility called 'UPDATE.EXE' is copyright
1992 by William Joseph Johnson all rights reserved and is only available
to REGISTERED USERS. The only way to obtain this utility, which will
enable you to keep on going with your data files created with the
SHAREWARE version, is to purchase the program. Aren't you 'worth it?'
MANUAL PROGRAM SETUP
If you want to set the program up MANUALLY it has been compressed
using Haruyasu Yoshizaki's LHA v2.13 into a self extracting archive.
CREATE A DIRECTORY on your hard or floppy disk for FitnessMate.
Remember you must place FitnessMate in a sub-directory such as
'c:\sport\log,' The DEFAULT DIRECTORY for the program is 'FMATE.'
If you use the install program provided, it will place the program
in this directory. In addition, unless it is told differently
during the setup the program will assume that you have used the
install program provided and that it is located in the 'FMATE'
directory.
If you MANUALLY set it up you MUST enter the correct DIRECTORY NAME
during the setup or the program will not know where it is and you
will get the resulting error messages. FitnessMate IS MADE TO NOT
SETUP IN ANY ROOT DIRECTORY. If you must run the program from a
floppy disk then first make a directory on it! Of course you can
also use the INSTALL program provided to install it to a floppy
disk if you want to.
Copy the package into your directory, then run the FitnessMate self
extracting archive (the *.exe file). It will then extract itself
and will essentially be 'ready to go.' You should then delete the
self extracting archive as it will still be there in your directory
taking up valuable disk space.
REGISTERED USERS MANUAL PROGRAM SETUP
If you are REGISTERED USER UPGRADING from a previous version and you
have not used the default directory (FMATE). When you execute the self
extracting archive into your program directory you will get a 'file
exists overwrite? Y/N' message for each file as the self extracting
archive executes. Answer YES (keep hitting the Y key) for all of the
files until the old have all been overwritten by the new.
Since upgrades have been made to the structure and method FitnessMate
uses to access it's data files, the data files you have allready

4.) From your FitnessMate directory, type FM.EXE to run FitnessMate
for the first time and carefully answer the setup questions.
That is all there is to it!
5.) Type 'F'. Then type 'P' to OPEN a different FitnessMate account.
Choose number two for 'Sample O. Data' to select the example FitnessMate
account. Type 'S'. Type 'R' to select the SPORT 'running'. Now put
the program through it's paces...
Try FitnessMate'S many reporting and graphing functions, enter some
performance data, change colors, zoom, etc; experiment...
Active letters and numbers appear highlighted on the screen and access
the program function listed. You can type these active letters and
numbers to access the program functions if you like, or you can use the
cursor keypad (arrow keys) to navigate the menus. Of course, a
combination of these two methods will also work. The space bar as well
as the enter / return key can be used to select when the cursor mode has
been activated (in most cases)

CONFIGURING FITNESSMATE
Many features of FitnessMate will be permanently set from the moment
FitnessMate is run for the first time. When you start the program, you
will be asked for the drive and directory that FitnessMate will reside on
and be run from. IMPORTANT - if you choose to set up manually, you must
place FitnessMate in a sub-directory... IT IS MADE TO NOT SETUP IN ANY ROOT
DIRECTORY! If you must run the program from a floppy disk then first make
a directory on it, put FitnessMate in the directory, then run the program
for the first time to invoke the setup! Then you will be asked for your
name or the name of the first user account. From this moment on FitnessMate
will be 'set up' basically. It is important that the correct versions of
the program files are in the current drive and directory from this moment
on, otherwise you will get an error message.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CONFIGURING FITNESSMATE
When setting FitnessMate up, there are a few things you should consider:
If you have a hard disk, you should use it for maintaining FitnessMate
and it's data files (i.e. set your program file directory to somewhere
on your hard drive). FitnessMate is geared toward the hard disk user.
It is a disk intensive program and 'best' results are achieved when run
and operated from a hard disk. If you are running on a floppy drive,
though the program will work normally, slower response due to hardware
limitations should be expected. The data files that FitnessMate creates
however, (those files with a '.DAT' extension) should be backed up to
floppy or tape regularly for safety sake.
If possible, using one of the commercially available disk caching systems
is recommended, as they incorporate features into their programs such
as being able to use extended and expanded memory and the like that are
not feasible to include in FitnessMate. They will increase the performance
of FitnessMate, and your systems overall performance will improve.
When setting your printer up for printing reports, set the paper so that
the print head is on the first line of the new sheet, or on the edge that
separates the sheets. FitnessMate's report output to the printer is all
calculated for this arrangement. Once you know this you will never waste
a sheet with FitnessMate.
If you like you can include FitnessMate's directory in your DOS PATH as
well. Although this is not necessary, it will enable you to run
FitnessMate from anywhere in your system without having to change to that
directory before running FitnessMate. Setting the PATH for this is only
beneficial to those using hard drives.

3. U S I N G F I T N E S S M A T E
USING THE MENUS / MOUSE
FitnessMate utilizes an intelligent, cursor or mouse driven, keyboard
'hot key' type interface that lends access to pull down menu windows and
their individual selections. Basically the letter / number is typed, and
then the ENTER / RETURN key, SPACE BAR or MOUSE BUTTON pressed if no
immediate action is taken by the intuitive part of the program.
The mouse is set up to accept directives from anywhere on the screen. What
this means is that virtually every time you click the button the program
will do something. You do not have to set the cursor exactly on the word
file to open the file pull down window. Going anywhere in the the general
area under the word will suffice. This lets one be a little sloppy with
the cursor and the program still responds. Once you have opened one of the
pull down windows, select the program functions from the same general area
under the word (i.e., file, sport, etc;). If you stray off too far to the
right the next window will open. In other words select in the left half of
each window even though the 'hot key' may be way over on the right. In
many instances clicking the mouse button will be the equivalent of hitting
the enter/return key or space bar.
There are a few ways that this keyboard interface can be used. Selections can
be made by entering any of the 'hot keys' which appear as highlighted letters
/ numbers, or, the program can be navigated using the cursor (arrow) keys and
selections can be made with either the space bar or the enter / return key.
If the former method is used one thing to keep in mind is that 'hot keys'
appearing as capitol letters can be entered as upper or lower case and either
will be accepted. The exceptions to this rule are those program features that
have their highlighted letter in lower case. Case is important in the
selection of these features found in the pull down windows. The mouse will
also get you just about everywhere you want to go. If you use a mouse you
will find the program to be very responsive and you will rarely have to make
keyboard selections.
YEAR identifies the current timeframe for all program functions and all
program functions are delimited by year. That is, the program is stuck in
whatever year is listed on the status line at the bottom of the screen. If
you have selected 1920 the chances are good that you will see alot of zeros
and get alot of no data exists messages. The year 1992 should be selected
for the sample data file "Sample O. Data."
LOCAL identifies functions associated with the current user account and only
this current user's account. It identifies functions associated with the
current sport and only this selected current sport. It includes only entries
made for this sports activity found present in this individuals user account.
GLOBAL identifies functions associated with the current user account and only
this current user's account. It includes all the different sports activity
found present in this individuals user account.

Mean is a type of average. To average, add

and find the middle value. What's the difference?
An average can sometimes be distorted by extreme
high or low values. A mean 'throws out' these
extreme high and low values. This results in a
'mean' perspective that is basically unaltered
by a stupendous or bad performance. Under
certain circumstances the 'mean' can be a more
revealing type of 'average.' Delimited by year.

WHAT'S NEW ABOUT FITNESSMATE?
1.) FitnessMate has now incorporated an intelligent graphing
algorithm that thinks for itself and automatically produces
custom fitting graphs. This advanced algorithm produces the
optimum display for detecting differences in your performance
entries. Additionally it produces the optimum display for
comparison type graphs especially distance versus time which
FitnessMate relys heavily on. A special thank you for a job

in the development of the new graphing algorithm.
2.) Mouse Support has been added. Selections can be made with either
the right or left button.
3.) American College of Sports Medicine protocol for determining VO2max.
ml/kg/min. and some other related parameters: 'American College of
Sports Medicine Metabolic Equations.'
For your information... the formula used to determine VO2max. ml/min.
is Balke, B. and Ware, R.W.: 'An experimental study of physical fitness
of Air Force Personnel.' U.S. Armed Forces Medical Journal 10:675.
Mastropaolo checked this method of determining VO2 against measured
uptake and found it to be very satisfactory. Mastropaolo, J. A., et

disease in middle aged Chicago men.' In Karvonen, M. D. and Barry, A.
J. (eds.): 'Physical Activity and the Heart.' Charles C. Thomas,
Springfield, IL.
The majority of the protocols utilized in the program are taken from
'The Physiological Basis of Physical Fitness and Athletics.' This text
is back in the college library right now (can't keep'em forever) but I
will have a more complete bibliography for you the next time.
The new protocols are the reason behind the data file upgrade and you
will be pleased to notice that they produce a slightly higher result.
Additionally the program has been expanded to give total coverage to the
ULTRA sports! This is good news for those of you who think and dream
big. FitnessMate has also never been friendlier to those of you
participating in shorter distance activities. Of course this program
cannot be all things to all people but it is now more things to more

to REGISTERED USERS. The only way to obtain this utility, which will
enable you to keep on going with your data files created with the
SHAREWARE version, is to purchase the program. Aren't you 'worth it?'
4.) Avocation Technologies is donating to this years American Cancer Society
Run Against Cancer and, The EMD Diesel Power Run. Additionally, one
other October event (sorry it can't be the Chicago Marathon this year)
will also be donated to. Both the former events are for charitable
causes (EMD is United Way) and we are proud to be turning your support
of FitnessMate into community support. So you see... everyone wins with
FitnessMate!
5.) This is an exerpt from a message I received on the 'Not So Perfect BBS'

i think i am writing to william johnson
i just downloaded fitness mate and want to know more about the program
i would use it to add about 250 entries per year and want to know if
the registered version can hold that many entries and still give me any
meaningful graphs
please contact me. thanks

Yes sir, it most certainly can. As it is right now, the
program is set up to accept as many as 800 yearly entries. It
could easily be double that but I have yet to meet anyone that
exercises more than twice per day 365 days a year. If you think
you want more I will give you more.
FitnessMate has just exploded in the past couple of months.
Version 2.0 will be released any day now. Additional American
College of Sports Medicine protocols have been added. Mouse support
has been added. Thanks in large part to mathematical formulas I
received from my close friend and calculus professor Hector Rivera
Melo the graphing algorithm thinks for itself. I have also given
the program a new 'facial' that is more becoming of the premier
sports fitness log / performance evaluation tool for 'elite'
athletes and ordinary guys like me.
Thank you for your inquiry. William Joseph Johnson
6.) The message mentions the 'new look' I have given the program.
I hope you will like it.
7.) Miscellaneous this and that... you will know when you see it.
8.) Keep in mind that the 'shareware concept' of software distribution
works only when people register (purchase) the software they use.
Producing a quality software product is a huge undertaking. If
it's worth having then it's worth paying for...
Support your shareware authors!
Thanks!
