3.0 Introducing Alad_IRQ(TM)
Alad_IRQ is a powerful DOS utility which allows your existing
GEnie PC Aladdin (TM) communications software to use any
interrupt (IRQ) supported by your serial port or internal modem.
You can also use it in a DOS session under Windows to provide
access to an IRQ not supported by Aladdin. Alad_IRQ works with
DOS versions 2.0 and higher, and uses 8K of memory (RAM).
Serial cards and board modems in your computer system are
installed at a particular address and use an IRQ (an Interrupt
ReQuest line) to signal the controlling software that they
require attention. Some cards only allow selection of a Com port:
Com1, Com2, etc., and use the industry standard addresses and
IRQs as described in Appendix A. Other serial ports let you
independently select a port address and IRQ which do not follow
any particular standards.
Communication software requires two pieces of information to work
with a serial card or a board modem. First, software must know
the address used by the board so that commands can be issued.
Secondly, the software must know which IRQ is used by the board
to request attention. Finally, you must be able to configure the
software to use the address and IRQ used by the serial card.
Otherwise, the board or modem will not work with the software.
The GE PC Aladdin software (referred to as Aladdin from here on)
allows you to select the serial port to use by number: Com1,
Com2, Com3 or Com4. Current versions of Aladdin use the industry
standard IRQs 3 & 4 for all serial ports. However, using the
Alad_IRQ utility enables the Aladdin software to operate with any
IRQ supported by your internal modem or serial card.
Alad_IRQ does this by redirecting the IRQ used by your serial
port or modem over to the IRQ expected by the Aladdin software.
Alad_IRQ detects when your hardware generates the IRQ, and then
signals Aladdin to process it. There is more to it than this, of
course, but this should give you the idea.

4.0 Installing Alad_IRQ
Alad_IRQ is normally placed in a subdirectory on your hard disk.
The following instructions assume you will put Alad_IRQ in a
directory named "ALADIRQ":
1. Create an "ALADIRQ" subdirectory on your hard disk using
the DOS "Make Directory" (MD) command:
Example: C>MD ALADIRQ <Enter>
NOTE: <Enter> means to press the Enter (Return) key.
2. Change the default directory to the directory you created
using the DOS Change Directory (CD) command:
Example: C>CD ALADIRQ <Enter>
3. Copy the distribution files to the ALADIRQ directory. If
the distribution files are on a floppy diskette in drive A,
you would enter:
Example: C:\ALADIRQ>COPY A:\*.* <Enter>
If your directory contains a README.1ST file, then check
this file for additional information not included in this
User Guide.
4. Copy the Alad_IRQ.EXE file to the directory containing
your Aladdin software. You must run Alad_IRQ from the
directory containing Aladdin.
That's it! Alad_IRQ is ready to run!

5.0 Before Using Alad_IRQ
Before you use Alad_IRQ with your serial ports, you should
verify that your system has no serious serial port or
interrupt conflicts. If you have been using your current
system for some time without problems, then you can probably
assume that your system is configured properly. If you have
changed your system setup recently, or if you have
occasional difficulties, then a little additional testing is
worth the effort. If you have the CTS Serial Port Utilities,
run "PortInfo /0", paying careful attention to the error and
warning messages regarding port and interrupt conflicts. Any
serial port or IRQ conflicts detected by PortInfo must be
resolved before using Alad_IRQ.
If you do not have the CTS Serial Port Utilities (SPU), then
we suggest you contact us to obtain a copy, particularly if
you observe any problems with Alad_IRQ. The shareware
version of the SPU is included for all registered users of
Alad_IRQ. The shareware version of the SPU is also on many
online systems under the filename CTSSPUxx.yyy, where xx is
the current version number (1.2), and yyy is the compression
type used on the system.
After you have verified that your system is in good working
order, then you need to determine which interrupt your
hardware is generating, and which interrupts your software
can use. You will use this information when starting
Alad_IRQ. The PortInfo summary screen shows you which IRQ
your serial port or internal modem is using - save this
value for later reference. The next section discusses how to
determine which IRQ Aladdin wants to use.
7

6.0 Using Alad_IRQ
You use Alad_IRQ as a replacement command line for the Aladdin
software. You will tell Alad_IRQ which IRQ is being used by the
serial port or internal modem, and which IRQ Aladdin expects it
to use. You can also tell Alad_IRQ to pass on any "Special
Commands" to the Aladdin software.
6.1 Help Screen
You can display the help screen from the DOS prompt by
entering either of the following commands from any directory
containing Alad_IRQ:
Alad_IRQ <Enter>
-OR-
Alad_IRQ /? <Enter>
6.2 Running Aladdin with Alad_IRQ
Before you run Aladdin with Alad_IRQ, you need to do three
things:
1. Copy the ALAD_IRQ.EXE program into the same
directory or sub-directory where your Aladdin software
exists.
2. You need to determine which IRQ your serial card or
modem is actually using. Write down this IRQ number
down as the "Hardware IRQ".
If you are not sure which IRQ is used, then please use
the PortInfo program in the SPU package described
previously to find out. DO NOT use MSD, as it does not
accurately report the IRQs used by your serial ports.
3. You need to determine which IRQ the Aladdin software
will be using. If you select Com1 or Com3 in the
Aladdin setup screen, then Aladdin uses IRQ 4.
Otherwise, it will use IRQ 3. Write this value down as
the "Software IRQ".
8

6.3 Starting Aladdin With Alad_IRQ
Whenever you use Aladdin with a non-standard IRQ, then you
will need to start Aladdin by running Alad_IRQ. The command
format to start Alad_IRQ is:
Alad_IRQ /ih /is <Enter>
where "h" is the "Hardware IRQ" you listed in step 2, and
"s" is the "Software IRQ" you listed in step 3. You MUST put
the IRQ values in the order shown.
The valid 'h' and 's' values are decimal 2-7 for an IBM
PC/XT computer, and 3-7, 9-12, 14 and 15 for an IBM AT or
compatible machine. If your serial card or internal modem
board has a setting for IRQ 2, it is actually using IRQ 9 in
an IBM AT or compatible computer. You should specify IRQ 9
as the hardware IRQ for Alad_IRQ.
6.4 Example: Using Aladdin on Com4 with IRQ 9
Alad_IRQ /i9 /i3 <Enter>
This command tells Alad_IRQ that the hardware is using IRQ
9, and Aladdin is using IRQ 3. Alad_IRQ will install itself
to use these values, and then start up Aladdin.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is one important limitation when using
Alad_IRQ. The "software interrupt" cannot be used by a
hardware device at the same time that Alad_IRQ is in use. In
the example above, the IRQ 3 line must be dedicated to
Alad_IRQ. The Com2 serial port, which normally uses IRQ 3,
must be inactive while Alad_IRQ (and Aladdin) is loaded.
9
Copyright 1993, Computer Telecommunication Systems, Inc.
7.0 Using Alad_IRQ with Windows
You can use Alad_IRQ in Windows just like you do in DOS. Before
using Alad_IRQ with Windows, it is important to have Windows
properly configured for the serial ports you have in your system.
You can do this either through your Windows control panel, or by
editing the WIN.INI file with a text editor. See your Microsoft
Windows documentation for additional information.
You can use Alad_IRQ under Windows in a DOS box to provide access
for DOS-based communication applications to IRQs not supported
directly by the application. Load Alad_IRQ as a described for DOS
in a Windows DOS box before running your DOS communications
program. Then run the application just as you would under DOS.

8.0 Examples
8.1 Example 1: Your modem is on Com3 using IRQ 5
Problem: Aladdin only uses Com3 with IRQ 4.
Solution: Use Alad_IRQ to "redirect" IRQ 5
generated by the modem to IRQ 4 (the conventional
IRQ for Com3) when using Aladdin.
Alad_IRQ /i5 /i4
^ ^
| |
| +-------- Aladdin uses IRQ 4
|
+------------ The modem uses IRQ 5
8.2 Example 2: Your serial ports support high IRQs
Problem: Aladdin doesn't - it only uses IRQs 3 & 4
Solution: Use Alad_IRQ to redirect the high IRQs
to the conventional IRQs supported by Aladdin. For
example, if you need to use Com4, IRQ 11, Aladdin
that expects Com4 to use IRQ 3. To use Aladdin
with this port, you run Alad_IRQ with the command:
Alad_IRQ /i11 /i3 <Enter>
8.3 Example 3: Sending Special Commands to Aladdin with
Alad_IRQ
Problem: You want to use special commands with Aladdin
while using Alad_IRQ to provide access to non-standard
IRQs
Solution: Alad_IRQ will pass all commands on the
command line on to the Aladdin software. Just
append them to the Alad_IRQ command line:
Alad_IRQ /i5 /i4 /NOEMS /CLOCK <Enter>
Will allow Aladdin to use Com1 or Com3 on IRQ 5
(depending on the Aladdin setup screen) with the
NOEMS and CLOCK special commands.

Appendix B: About Computer Telecommunication Systems
Computer Telecommunication Systems, Inc. was formed in 1990 to
provide new communication software products, custom programming
services, and consulting on personal computer asynchronous
communications. We currently offer (as of December, 1993) the
following products and services:
The CTS Serial Port Utilities (TM)
----------------------------------
The CTS Serial Port Utilities (SPU) is a collection of DOS
software utilities that allows you to diagnose and control
the serial ports in your computer. Most serial port problems
can be resolved by using these utilities. Each of the
utilities support all standard and any user-defined serial
ports.
PortInfo is a comprehensive utility which tests your system
to determine everything possible about your serial ports,
including interrupt and addressing conflicts. PortInfo
provides you with FAILURE and WARNING messages about actual
and possible conflicts.
PortInfo provides details on the following:
* Detects multiple serial ports at the same address (eg,
two ports installed as Com1!)
* Interrupt conflicts between a bus mouse and a serial
port
* Shared interrupts (2 serial ports, or a serial port and
a serial mouse sharing an IRQ)
* Conflicts between COM4 and 8514/A compatible monitors
* Unusual BIOS and DOS serial port setups
* Serial ports that cannot generate interrupts
* Helps to determine when interrupts can be shared
14

Other information provided:
* Actual IRQ used by each port and the current IRQ status
* DOS port assignments (com1-com4, mouse)
* Port (UART) Identification (8250, 8250A/16450, 16550,
16550A), the T/Port, and some "emulated UARTs"
* FIFO status: If it exists, on / off, else 'None'
* If the FIFO is ON, the current FIFO receiver trigger
level is displayed.
* All programmable port parameters: speed, format,
parity, current RTS and DTR settings
* Current status of modem lines: Ring Indicator, Carrier
Detect, Clear to Send, Data Set Ready, with indication
of when the lines are tied together (looped back).
Other features:
* Ports are COMPLETELY restored to their original
settings
* Supports standard serial ports 1-4 on PC/AT, 1-8 on
PS/2
* Supports up to 8 user definable serial ports (port
address and IRQ)
* Displays detailed messages about conflicts with
reference numbers to assist looking up the detailed
assistance in the User Guide.
Other Utilities:
* Control the 16550A FIFO trigger level
* Set port speed and format
* Add a serial port to the BIOS Comm Port assignment
table
* Swap serial ports in the BIOS Comm Port assignment
table
* Control the RTS, DTR, and Out2 (IRQ enable) lines
* Reset a serial port to initial settings
While this is a great help to an individual user who is
experiencing a serial port problem, the SPU is a "must have"
tool for consultants and PC support personnel who support a
number of computers and users. One of the license options
for the SPU is specifically designed for consultants.
The CTS Serial Port Utilites is being distributed via
shareware. Please refer to the included file ORDER.DOC for
information about the different license options and what is
provided with each one.

AT Command Test (TM)
--------------------
AT Command Test (ATCT) is a software application that
performs a comprehensive test of the AT command set of any
modem claiming to be "Hayes Compatible". ATCT tests most of
the standard modem commands, all result codes, and many
other characteristics. ATCT provides three different reports
of command set compatibility with nine different Hayes modem
product lines.
ATCT is used today both as a qualification tool for
purchasing modems by major corporations, and as a diagnostic
tool for testing modems returned to corporate support
services prior to obtaining warranty service.
Contact CTS for more information.
SwapIRQ (TM)
------------
A small utility that allows software to use IRQs that are
not supported directly by the software. For example, a
communication application that supports COM3 on IRQ 4 can
now use COM3 on any IRQ. Or, a game that requires a sound
card on IRQ 7 can now use a sound card that generates
interrupts on IRQ 5. Contact CTS for more information.
MouseOFF and MouseON
--------------------
MouseOff disables a serial mouse, allowing a modem or other
device using the same interrupt (IRQ) to operate without
interference. MouseOn re-enables the mouse after you have
finished using the other device. MouseOff and MouseOn are
especially useful in sharing an interrupt between a mouse
and a modem when the communications software detects and
tries to use the mouse.
Serial Cards (Comm Ports)
-------------------------
We carry a variety of serial cards that contain 16550A or
compatible UARTs with bi-directional parallel ports.
