  2.      WHAT'S NEW in Mail Manager v3.50 - January 24, 1994

  5.      SUPPORT STATUS

  8.        Personal commitments forced Chip Morrow to shut down Mail Manager's
  9.        original home support bulletin board, causing him to drop out of the
  10.        picture for several months.  But times have changed, and he's starting
  11.        up another BBS in a new locale.  Development is now being carried
  12.        forward by both of us, under the banner of Makai Software, and both
  13.        Chip and Doug continue to provide program support.
  14.  
  15.        Due to the transitory nature of many bulletin boards, and the fact
  16.        that you may be reading these instructions a long time after they are
  17.        written, it is probably best not to list bulletin boards where we may
  18.        be reached.  Inevitably, whichever board we cite will immediately go
  19.        out of business, and the phone number will be reassigned to somebody
  20.        who does not care to be awakened by the phone ringing in the middle of
  21.        the night when we modem junkies place most of our long distance calls.
  22.  
  23.        The authors, however, CAN be found on the following computer network
  24.        conferences:
  25.                            Fido: RBBS-PC and OFFLINE
  26.                            Rime: RBBS-PC and RBBSQWK

  28.        New releases are always announced in these conferences, and we
  29.        occasionally post lists of the currently active distribution sites
  30.        there.  If you wish to contact us via these conferences, address
  31.        messages to Doug Wilson or Chip Morrow.

  33.        Current Makai Software releases are always sent to Compuserve within a
  34.        few days of release, in the IBMBBS forum (GO IBMBBS).  The doors
  35.        themselves may be found in library 3, while the individually-
  36.        distributed utilities (MNET, MAILFIX, etc.) may be found in library 2.
  37.        While you're on Compuserve, you can reach one of the authors, Chip
  38.        Morrow, there (72677,502).

  53.        We're sorry, but we simply do not have the time or resources to make
  54.        individual voice calls to help with debugging your MNET setup.  On the
  55.        other hand, we'd like to see you in any of the above network
  56.        conferences, where you can get help from others as well as ourselves,
  57.        and where questions/answers/reports/release notices get a much wider
  58.        audience, and can benefit more people.

  61.      SO, WHAT ELSE IS NEW?
  62.      ---------------------
  63.  
  64.      MAIL MANAGER +PLUS+ v3.50 is a significant update to the version 3 series.
  65.      We've been busy!
  66.  
  67.      Changes since the release of v3.11:
  68.  
  69.      1)  Violation notices now list the intended conference correctly.
  70.          v3.11 always showed intended conference as "MAIN".
  71.  
  72.      2)  Sysop chat mode can now only be exited by the sysop pressing
  73.          [Esc] or [F10].  "/QUIT" by either party no longer works.
  74.  
  75.      3)  As indicated by the prompt shown to the user, if no new messages
  76.          when attempting to D)ownload a packet, user is now returned to
  77.          menu.  Previous versions went into countdown timer.
  78.  
  79.      4)  Display when extracting messages now shows table of last-read
  80.          message number, high-message number in the base, and messages
  81.          extracted.  If extraction reaches defined limits before reaching
  82.          end of messages, notice to this effect is shown on screen to
  83.          alert user there may be more messages which can be extracted in
  84.          an additional packet.

  87.      5)  Sysop can now define max number of messages per any one mail
  88.          packet (1 to 9999).  This setting has a direct effect on RAM
  89.          used by the door.  Lower number = less memory required.
  90.          Default setting is 1000 messages.  New option in MAILCFG to
  91.          handle this capability.
  92.  
  93.      6)  User can now select max msgs per conference and max msgs per
  94.          packet preferences (up to Sysop-defined max).  Default is
  95.          Sysop-defined max for both.  New option in MUSER to handle
  96.          this capability.
  97.  
  98.      7)  Fixed bug (affecting net status users only) that prevented
  99.          proper count of personal messages when extracting mail.
  100.  
  101.      8)  Incoming ascii 127's (DEL) now converted to backspace when
  102.          getting input from user.
  103.  
  104.      9)  Main menu command prompt no longer includes "G" if sysop has
  105.          not configured to allow DTR drop from within the door.  In
  106.          such cases, G)oodbye option is now not supported.  Also,
  107.          slightly modified text shown to user in countdown timer when
  108.          DTR drop not enabled.

  111.          * Sysops disabling the G)oodbye command should edit the
  112.            appropriate menu and/or help files to remove mention
  113.            of the G)oodbye option.
  114.  
  115.     10)  Can now abort countdown timer via either the spacebar or [ENTER]
  116.          (Spacebar is a bit easier to find in a hurry).
  117.  
  118.     11)  When finished with conference selection, novice users (menus
  119.          turned on) are reminded they may use Configuration option 'X'
  120.          to set conference pointers.
  121.  
  122.     12)  New optional command line switch:
  123.  
  124.             /Vx  (where "x" is the conference number in which violation
  125.                  notices should be placed).
  126.  
  127.          If /V not specified, violation notices will be written to
  128.          MAIN area (conference #1), as per all previous versions of
  129.          the door.
  130.  
  131.     13)  Recent additions to QWK header format were brought to our
  132.          attention, and implemented.  (Last 3 bytes of QWK header).
  133.          Message already contains a valid origin tear and tagline if an
  134.          "*" is present in byte 128 of QWK/REP message header.  Also
  135.          modified the handling of tear/taglines for net status users, to
  136.          provide better compatibility with some QWK net systems.

  139.     14)  When setting message markers in Configuration option 'X', prompt
  140.          now shows only the range of conference numbers available to the
  141.          user at that point.

  144.     15)  When selecting an "alias" conference for the first time, the
  145.          door now asks the user for his/her preferred alias.  Checks to
  146.          make sure this alias is not already in use.

  149.     16)  *.MSG Fido messages that have been received are now marked as
  150.          such in the QWK packet.  All previous versions always extracted
  151.          *.MSG's as "unread".
  152.  
  153.     17)  Hardcoded "LHARC" replaced with "LHA" (finally) for Sysops who
  154.          prefer LZH archives, but don't use Mail Manager's list of
  155.          archivers (MAILMGR.ARL).  "LHA" hasn't been "LHARC" for years.
  156.  
  157.     18)  Added the ability to force the violation-notice conference as
  158.          active for all users.  Violation notices are stored in either
  159.          conference #1 (MAIN), or whichever conference number you
  160.          specified via the /Vxx command line.  This one is for all those
  161.          sysops who want to force users to get the MAIN conference.
  162.  
  163.     19)  Added "1 key resets all" option to the message selection menu.
  164.          (Within option "X" from configuration menu).  Can now globally
  165.          R)eset last message read in all conferences to highest message
  166.          in each base, or "x" number of messages from highest, rather
  167.          than manually updating many different conferences one at a time.
  168.  
  169.     20)  Sysop can now specify default new user options.  If the file
  170.          NEW_USER.OPT is present in your Mail Manager +Plus+ directory,
  171.          the door now reads the user configuration defaults from there.
  172.          If NEW_USER.OPT is not present, default values are the same as
  173.          all previous versions of the door.
  174.  
  175.     21)  Online R)ead/P)ost options can now be "turned off" by the Sysop
  176.          via MAILCFG.  If so configured, "R" and "P" are removed from the
  177.          command prompt, and those keystrokes will return the familiar
  178.          "Command not recognized" error message.
  179.  
  180.          * Sysops disabling Read/Post should edit the appropriate menu
  181.            and/or help files to remove mention of both R)ead and P)ost
  182.            options.
  183.  
  184.     22)  Internal code optimization and speedup.
  185.  
  186.     23)  Adds line feed (ASCII 227) after taglines.
  187.  
  188.     24)  Tearlines now added (if not already present in message) before
  189.          adding tagline when extracting.
  190.  
  191.     25)  MAILCFG modified to only allow entering taglines up to 56
  192.          characters, to assure tags do not get truncated.
  193.  
  194.     26)  When importing a message to a conference which is set for "Fido
  195.          style tearlines", MMGR will now strip all but the last tearline
  196.          for packets uploaded by netstatus users.  The assumption here is
  197.          that the originating node will have a proper tearline and origin
  198.          line, so the last tearline should be left intact, while extra
  199.          tearlines from mail readers etc should still get deep-sixed.  If
  200.          packet is from a "normal" user, ALL tearlines are stripped.  In
  201.          any case, stripped tearlines are replaced by "..."
  202.  
  203.     27)  Added rudimentary OS/2 support:
  204.  
  205.          - Now should give up time slices under OS/2 as well as under DV
  206.            (thanks, Richie!)
  207.          - Should report OS/2 instead of DOS, and correct version number.
  208.          - Will use same file sharing/locking as you have RBBS configured
  209.            to use.  Make sure you have MAILCFG set to use DV in local
  210.            mode if that's the way you have RBBS setup, otherwise set
  211.            local mode to NetBios.

  214.     28)  NEWFILES.DAT (new file listings) is now in ANSI color, if
  215.          user has ANSI enabled.  This one has been suggested several
  216.          times over the last few years.
  217.  
  218.     29)  Sped up FOSSIL routines - now sends entire line at once instead
  219.          of a single character at a time.  Remote display is noticeably
  220.          faster.  (REMINDER:  Use of a FOSSIL is highly recommended for
  221.          fast modems!)
  222.  
  223.     30)  Now handles import and export of messages to/from RBBS-format
  224.          conferences 50 records at a time.  This permits the processing
  225.          of extremely long messages without the truncation problems
  226.          found in previous releases.
  227.  
  228.     31)  BPS rate reported in W)ho's online was updated to agree with
  229.          current BusiMod(STUNY) and Cellar Door modified versions of
  230.          RBBS-PC, while keeping compatibility with recent stock RBBS-PC
  231.          releases.
  232.  
  233.     32)  When a net status user uploads a long message with a net origin
  234.          tagline, if the message does get split, the tagline will be
  235.          appended to all parts of the message.
  236.  
  237.     33)  "TO:" information at the beginning of message text is carried
  238.          over to the additional messages created when a long message is
  239.          split.  [ Suggested by Rick Moen ]
  240.  
  241.     34)  Support added for RBBS mod packages which allow more than 999
  242.          messages per conference.
  243.  
  244.     35)  Fixed bug:  When selecting/de-selecting the last conference on
  245.          the screen in the configuration section, it no longer jumps to
  246.          the next screenful of conferences.  [Thanks to Eddie Rowe for
  247.          mentioning this]
  248.  
  249.     36)  When selecting/deselecting conferences, user can now find
  250.          conference by matching a text string in either the conference
  251.          name or description.

  253.                      ----- Utility Program Updates -----
  254.  
  255.     37)  MUSER now has a /Pxxxx command line switch to purge MMGR users
  256.          who have not used the door for xxxx days automatically, without
  257.          intervention from the keyboard.  This lends itself to automatic
  258.          operation in nightly event batch files.
  259.  
  260.     38)  MAILFIX now has a /P command line to purge private messages
  261.          that have been received.
  262.  
  263.     39)  MMINDEX now has an optional "/L" command line option, used as
  264.          follows:

  266.              /Lfilename.log
  267.  
  268.          This option will cause MMINDEX to process only the conferences
  269.          listed in a pre-existing echotoss.log-type of file.  Replace
  270.          "filename.log" with the path/name of the log file to process.
