PCMBOX.EXE is a packet program for PC's, with a lot of terminal
program functions. Besides it's a mialbox program with commands
adopted from both WA7MBL style and Digicom. The program can be
used in both 7/8 bit character mode, and a special opertunity to
convert Danish characters æ¢åƥŠto UK character style.

║ 2 Installation ║
╚════════════════╝
┌──────────────┐
│ 2.1 Hardware │
└──────────────┘
The program is testet on PK88, PK232, TNC2C, and reported run-
ning on KPC2. But surely almost any TNC with a similar command
set will work.
These signals are used in the seriel cable: TX, RX, CTS, RTS,
DSR, DCD and GND.
There are some harware demands. DCD should go activ when connec-
ted. In PK232 TNC's you should set DCDCONN ON. In PK88 you
should set jumper J03 to follow the connect led. On almost any
TNC's this hardware demand is fullfilled. PK88 owner's should
also be aware of, that using a firmware version prior to 23
August 91, will experince TimeOut problems with Yapp Transfers.
In the 23 August 91 firmware, you can specify TX byffer Size to
eliminate the problem (18k is a laaaaarge buffer).
USERS should be set to 1, because the program can't handle more
than one user at a time.
TRFLOW, TXFLOW and XFLOW should be OFF, to obtain full hardware
flow control (RTS/CTS).
To use 8 bit character mode 8BITCONV should be ON.
Any MFILTER command should be OFF ($00). Any PMS in the TNC
should be OFF while operating PCMBOX.
On one of the last pages in this document, there is a full TNC2
command list.
If you are using 4DOS and want to run PCMBOX under DesqView, be
aware of the parameters UMBENV and UMBLOAD in 4DOS.INI. If you
experince problems try to set them both OFF.
┌─────────────┐
│ 2.2 Upgrade │
└─────────────┘
If you already have a version of PCMBOX installed, it is a bit
more easy to install the new version. Unpack the Archive in a
sub directory to the PCMBOX directory. Type ENGLISH to obtain UK
text in PCMBOX. Type the READ.ME file to see what files have
been changes since the last release of PCMBOX. Copy the the
listed file to your PCMBOX directory plus the two .EXE files.
Then change to your PCMBOX directory and type PCMSET. Now you
can set up the new parameters without having to specify all the
parameters from your old version of PCMBOX.

│ 3.1 Calls - Text │
└──────────────────┘
▄ Your call.
Write your own call. With or without SSID.
▄ PCMBOX CTEXT.
Two lines of connect text. Are only sent out in mailbox
mode.
▄ Disconnect text.
The use of //B, //Q or B, transmits this text to the con-
nected station. <D> and <T> in the string, will be sub-
stituted with actual date and actual time.
▄ MHEARD text.
This text will be sent when the mheard command are used
(//MH or JH).
▄ Calls, that are not allowed access to mailbox/bbs.
This line blacklists calls, so they can't use the mailbox
or BBS. It can also be used to stop those who have RELINK
ON. If the LINK are broken then the RELINK ON station will
try to reestablish the LINK. That's very unfortunately if
the station is a BBS.
▄ Users who have access to the PRIVATE directory.

gram can write the line received with your call in, to a
file: own_call.HRD .
▄ Trace MYCALL.
PCMBOX can make a beep every time your call is detected in
the air.

files.
┌───────────────────┐
│ 3.4 Program Files │
└───────────────────┘
▄ Editor filename.
Specify your favorite editor here. Remember if you don't
have a path to the editor at boot time, then specify the
path here. You can specify a "jump to line" function, if
your editor supports. Eg with QEDIT:
qedit,-N
This tells PCMBOX to use an editor called qedit, and -N is
the "jump to line" function. When creating a mail with
Alt-O, qedit will automatically jump to line 10, when
called.
▄ External program Alt-A.
Write the name af a program you would like to call within
PCMBOX. Personally i'm using a small file/disk utillity
ELF, with 4DOS support :-).
▄ Text viewer.
This program is called every time you select a function
that involves viewing a text file. The most popular pro-
gram is of course LIST.
▄ Program to call with //XE or XE.
This program is called when a user uses the //XE or XE
command. It can be very hazardous if you don't consider
the possibilities for unwanted access to your PC. Perso-
nally i use it for viewing ARC'ed files. I create a batch
file FILEVIEW.BAT like this:
REM FILEVIEW program
fv %1 > contents.lst
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
After a user have executed the //XE or XE command, a text
file can then be downloaded containing the STDOUT from
fileview (fv.exe). You can also redirect the output form
the program to the file STDOUT.PCM, which should reside in
the PCMBOX start-up directory. This file will then be sent
automatically to the user.
▄ Command for alternative DIR.
An empty string here tells PCMBOX to use standard PCMBOX
DIR function when a user uses DIR. Anything else will be
executed and the STDOUT from the executed program are
piped to the temporary file PCM4DIR, and this file wille
then be uploaded to the user automatically.
External parameters can be specified by the remote user.
If you only write DIR here, a 4DOS DIR can be written by
the remote user as:
//DIR /JC PROGRAM
The 4DOS DIR with option JUSTIFY and CAPITAL letters wil
be sent to the user. In standard MS/DOS the user could
write:
//DIR /W PROGRAM
/P for the MORE ? option could not be used.
Another exampel of an alternativ DIR could be:
TYPE REGISTER.DIR
Then the DIR command will TYPE the file REGISTER.DIR to
the file PCM4DIR, and then upload this file to the user.
NORTONS FILEINFO.EXE also works here.
These options are not only for DIR but also WP and YW.
▄ File description utility.
4DOS user are familliar with this term. This option is
used to describe a file uploaded by a user, so you don't
have to guess what in the heck an upload contains.
If the file description utillity like 4DOS DESCRIBE re-
quires quote sign like "" then you have to specify it
here, like:
describe,""
FILEINFO from NORTON can also be used here, and doesn't
require quote signs.

│ 3.7 Text Disconnect State │
└───────────────────────────┘
The ALT function keys, are programmable in two ways: functions
in disconnect state and functions in connect state.
For programming a function key, you need to specify two things:
a) A short help text with a max. length of 12 characters.
This text is used in the HELP screen, as a reminder of
what function the key has.
b) The executable string to the TNC. Max. length 80 chara-
cters.
Eg:
OZ9BOX <- Alt F1 a)
c oz9box b)
The function of the above key Alt-F1, is to connect my local BBS
OZ9BOX.
Alt F10 is already programmed with: BREAK(Ctrl-C) and then
DISCONNECT.

There is a possibillity for inserting 3 "smart chars" in a line.
<CR> on the last position will send a CR/LF after the string,
otherwise not.
<D> in the string will insert current date when transmitted.
<T> in the string will insert current time when transmitted.

All the PCMBOX system files are placed in the PCMBOX directory.
PACFILES is the connect directory. MAIL is for the Mail databa-
se. PRIVATE is for the PRIVATE marked users. YFILES is for
manually downloaded YAPP files(F2), and TFILES is for manually
downloaded text files(Alt-L).
All directories in PACFILES, are for text files, and all direc-

The remote functions are these commands, that can be used by an
user connected to PCMBOX.
There are two set of commands. One with // in front, and one
without.
The // commands has been adopted from DIGICOM, and adjusted for
PC use. The principle is that all commands should begin with //
eg. //DIR. These commands are in use when the connected person
is a MAILBOX user.
The other set of commands are WA7MBL style, and in use when the
connected person is a BBS user.
▄ B - //BYE
Disconnects the user. The text, if any, in setup wil be
transmitted.
▄ T - //CHAT
PCMBOX morses the call of the connected user, and then
rings a bell 10 times. You can abort this ringing with
hitting Q on the keyboard. The connected user will then be
informed of that you are ready for a chat.
▄ W directory - //DIR directory
Shows the contents of directory. With or without sub-dire-
ctory.
Eg:
//DIR TNC/PK-232
▄ DU (call) - //DU (call)
Display User. Without call the complete userlist will be
transmitted. With call only data for call.
▄ //H
A short list of available MAILBOX commands.
▄ H - //HELP
Sends a description of every remote command.
▄ I - //INFO

▄ C Connect routing.
Instead of writing eg. C OZ1HMN every time you want to
connect someone, a "routing list" can be created. One
soloution would be to program F1-F9, but this here is
smarter.
Suppose you want to connect OZ1HMN. Which key was he pla-
ced on ? I'm sure you can renember his name. Just tap Alt-
C and write LARS (that's my name HI). Then PCMBOX will
substitute LARS with C OZ1HMN. Se the following example of
a routing file. The name of the file should be PCMBOX.DIR:
Synonym Route info.
LARS OZ1HMN
LARS1 OZ1HMN v OZ4KK
EDR OZ8JYL
BOX OZ9BOX
ERIK OZ4KK v OZ8JYL
SM SM6KIK@OZ1DKI
TEST 3 OZ1HMN@OZ1DKI@SK6YW-13
Upper/lower case characters doesn't matter.
The synonym has to start in position 1 in the file. A
synonym may not contain spaces, and the length may not
exceed 16 characters.
The route information that follows the synonym has to be
separated from the synonym by one or more spaces.
An @ indicates, that the connect is via a NetRom. In the
example above, SM will start a connect to OZ1DKI (a Net-
Rom), and when connected, send a connect to SM6KIK. When
Netrom Route connect is in progress, BUSY vil blink. Net-
rom Route will be terminated if "Failure with" or "Busy
from" is received, or you press <ESC>.
Anyway, if you can't remember the synonym you want to
call, just write a ? at the prompt. The synonym list from
PCMBOX.DIR will be displayed at the screen.
The function can also be used in connected mode, to con-
nect from a eg. a node.
If the synonym you have written at the prompt doesn't
exist, PCMBOX will ask if you want to connect anyway. If
you want, just hit <RETURN>, if not <ESC>.
▄ D Delete file
With this function you can delete a file on the disk.

▄ E Editor
Call the external editor specified in SETUP. Remember to
have a path in AUTOEXEC.BAT or in the SETUP.
▄ F DIR
Directory list with or without subdir specification. Wild-
card * and ? can be used as in DOS.
PCMBOX has some "smart dirs". These are the special direc-
tories used. Eg. if the PRIVATE dir specified in SETUP,
is:
C:\PCMBOX\PRIVAT
then Alt-F and then write PRIVAT, will show the content of
C:\PCMBOX\PRIVAT. The same for your other directories in
SETUP.
▄ G DOS Gateway
This a temporary exit to DOS. To return from DOS to PCMBOX
you have to write EXIT. A good function for running small
utilities. You should not be surprised if a program do-

The first question asked is, what status the mail should
have. Either B for bulletin (to all) or P for private
(only to call). The next question is to whom. Write the
call if it's a private, or a group (IBM, FILES, PACKET
...) if it's a bulletin. The last question is what the
subject should be. Write anything within 38 characters.
The external editor is used to edit the mail.
A special mail group is, PRIVAT. If you write a mail to
PRIVAT then users listed in the private string from setup
can read these, and no one else.
▄ P Send Mail

When PCMBOX gets connected, it writes some information to the
log file, PCMLOG.*. These informations are: who connects, date/-
time and remotecommands used.
Then the userlist is updated. This list contains information
about every user that connects PCMBOX.
If it's an incoming connect, the TNC is put into TRANSPARENT
mode. This is to obtain a more effective packet transmission,
and then less used time on the frequency.
PCMBOX morse's the connected call, at the chosen speed/frequen-
cy.
If PCMBOX is in MAILBOX mode, the file WELCOME.DAT will be send,
if it'a in BBS mode then the file WELCBBS.DAT will be send.

│ 8.6 YAPP │
└──────────┘
Yapp is a protocol to transfer binary files. The YAPP Resume
function in F5FBB's BBS is supported with both manual download
(F2/automatc) and Remote //YD,YD.
Yapp requires some TNC parametres to be set. Please see HARDWARE
on p. 5.
File transmissions can be terminated by pressing <ESC> twice
within 2 sec.
A file download can not be done if there isn't the nessecary
free diskspace.
PCMBOX supports an automatic YAPP function, like ZMODEM in TELIX
(tm). If you want to download a file just write:
YD filename.ext
and bingo, PCMBOX will start the YAPP receive session when it
gets acknowledgement from the remote packet station. If you know
that the one you are connected to also uses PCMBOX (5.35 or
higher) and you want to upload a file to him, just start the
upload by pressing F3 an write the filename. PCMBOX does the
rest in both ends.
The automatic yapp feature has a timeout of 60 sec. When a
automatic YAPP session is terminated, there will be a delay of
60 sec. before anoter automatic session can be started. That is
to prevent aborted downloads to start this function.

┌─────────────┐
│ 8.7 EVENT's │
└─────────────┘
With EVENT statements you can inform PCMBOX to terminate at a
specific day at a specific time, with an errorlevel.
An errorlevel is a variable used to communicate simpel infor-
mation from a program to DOS. Errorlevel can take values from 0
to 255. If PCMBOX exits noramlly (Alt-X) it will return errorle-
vel=0 to DOS. A Batch file is used to test errorlevels. An
exsampel:
@echo off
cls
pcmbox
if errorlevel 200 goto test
goto end
:test
echo This is an errorlevel 200
:end
Events are specified in the file: PCMBOX.EVT. Study the original
file for further examples. An event example in PCMBOX.EVT
EVENT DA 13:30 200
If PCMBOX.EVT contains the above event, and PCMBOX is started
from the batch file example, then PCMBOX will terminate auto-
matically DAily at 13:30 with errorlevel 200. The batch file
will then test errolevel and execute the echo statement.
Lines beginning with ; in position 1 are comments.
There can not be events an comments in the same line.
DA = DAily
MO = MOnday
TU = TUesday
WE = WEdensday
TH = THuesday
FR = FRiday
SA = SAturday
SU = SUnday
An event will only occur if PCMBOX is started at the specific
time. If we take the above example, and starts PCMBOX 13:35 then
the event will not be executed before the following day.
An additional Event statement is:
EVENT DA 13:30 SCRIPT "getlist"
and will execute the script file "getlist".
There can be maximum 50 event's (/RESTRICT's - next para.).

│ 8.8 RESTRICT's │
└────────────────┘
RESTRICT'ions are something you can set a given day, in a speci-
fic period and on a specific function. All remote users are
influenced by a restriction. A rectriction could be to dissable
yapp some days in a period , say 19:00 22:00. An example:
;YD not allowed DAily between 19 and 22
RESTRICT DA 19:00 22:00 YD
RESTRICT's are set in the file PCMBOX.EVT.
For further examples, see the original PCMBOX.EVT file.
DA = DAily
MO = MOnday
TU = TUesday
WE = WEdensday
TH = THuesday
FR = FRiday
SA = SAturday
SU = SUnday
The functions that can be restricted are:
YD = Yapp Download
YU = Yapp Upload
B = BBS/Mailbox
C = Connect
T = Talk
Restrict on B (BBS/Mailbox) will disable all remote commands
except //Q //B and B. Rectrict on C (Connect) doesn't allow
connects at all. The remote user is informed that PCMBOX is
Busy, and will then be disconnected. A restrict on T turns the
Talk function off.
A restrict that overlaps midnight, has to be split into 2 sec-
tions. If one has to go from 22:00 02:00, the 2 rectrictions
should be 22:00 23:59 and 00:00 02:00.
A RESTRICT can enabled/disabled manually from the keyboard by
means of Shift F5-F9.
In the line that seperates the RX/TX screens you can see the
status of restrictions. A rectriction anabled is marked by a -.
There can be maximum 50 RESTRICT's (/Event's).

┌────────────────────────┐
│ 8.9 SCRIPT programming │
└────────────────────────┘
The script programming language is used to collect some often
used functions in a file, and then just let PCMBOX execute the
file later. An example could be to log on to the local BBS, look
for private mail, download it, and fetch the latest mail list,
then disconnect. All these functions can be grouped in an script
file.
Script files have .PSF (PCMBOX Script File), as extension, and
shall be placed i the SCRIPT directory.
The script files, can be executed in 3 different ways.
The script file can be executed by F5 EXEC Script.
It can also be specified as a command line parameter when star-
ting PCMBOX:
c:\packet\pcmbox getmail
When PCMBOX has finished initializing, the script file GETMAIL
will be executed.
The 3rd. possibility is to make an event that executes the
script file:
EVENT DA 13:30 SCRIPT "getmail"
This event will execute the script file GETMAIL every day (DA)
at 13.30. PCMBOX has to be active when the event time occurs, or
the event will not be executed.
In the following list of script commands, there will be no
examples how to use the commands. Please see the original script
files distributed in SCRIPT.LZH.
When the term "string" is used the active part is only string,
but the string has to be enclosed in "".
▄ BEEP "string"
If "string" is recognized in received text, then PCMBOX
will make a beep. Only one BEEP string can be set at a
time.
▄ CASE "string" GOTO label
Used for multi-selection of received text. If the "string"
is recognized in received text, then goto label. A label
is : with one word after (eg. :end) as in batch file pro-
gramming. Up to 20 case sentences can be specified at a
time. Only forward goto is recognized, not backwards in a
script file.

▄ CLOSE
Closes an ascii file opened with a DOWNLOAD ASCII "file"
command.
▄ CONNECT string
Can be used just like: CONNECT call (via xyz) or as a
Netrom Route connect: CONNECT oz1hmn@oz1dki. Se also route
connect Alt-C, for examples.
▄ DOS string
Executes string as a DOS command. String could be eg. DIR
> FILES.TXT. The DOS command is executed as a shell func-
tion, and therefore you should make sure that there is
enough free memory to execute a DOS shell plus the com-
mand.
▄ DOWNLOAD ASCII "file"
Creates (appends) a ascii file on your disk, and all re-
ceived text lines will be written to the file. The file is
closed with the CLOSE command.
▄ DOWNLOAD YAPP "file"
Creates a binary file on disk, and executes the yapp down-
load session.
Auto Yapp download can be used instead of this command.
▄ GOTO label
Jumps to a certain place (label line), in the script file.
There can only be used forward goto's, no backward labels
will be reconigzed.
▄ IF TIMEOUT GOTO label
This command line is used together with the TIMEOUT, and
WAITFOR command. TIMEOUT specifies when a waitfor should
fall through if the waitfor string never appears. The IF
TIMEOUT GOTO label, should be placed just after the wait-
for, and can then detect if a timeout has occoured.
▄ PRINTER ON
All received text will be echo'ed to PRN:.
▄ PRINTER OFF
Echo to PRN is switched OFF.
▄ SEND "string"
Transmits "string" to TNC. Could be "C OZ1HMN".
▄ SENDTLX xxx
Transmits mail number xxx from the database to the TNC.
▄ TIMEOUT xxx

Enables a timer for xxx seconds. Used in conjunction with
the WAITFOR statement. If you don't specify a TIMEOUT
value before a WAITFOR command, PCMBOX will hang here
until the WAITFOR statement is fullfilled or you hit
<ESC>.
▄ TONE(freq,time)
Make a tone with the frequency <freq>, and the duration
<time>, in milli seconds.
▄ UPLOAD ASCII "file"
Opens the ascii file on your disk, and then transmits the
file. Automatically closes the file when finished.
▄ UPLOAD YAPP "file"
Opens the binary file on your disk, and then executes the
yapp upload session.
▄ WAITFOR "string"
Wait in this line until "string" is recognized in the
received text or the TIMEOUT timer expires. If you don't
specify a TIMEOUT value, PCMBOX will hang here until the
"string" is received.
A special case is WAITFOR "". This command will just wait
until the next line containing a CR ($0D) is received.
▄ WRITE "string"
Just writes "string" on screen. Usefull for comments in
the script file.
▄ :label
Marks a line in the script file for any goto statement to
use. A label has to start in position 1 in the file, and
the first character should be a : . PCMBOX isn't case
sensitive. Remember, only forward GOTO's can be used, no
loop back in the file.

release versions too often. The schedule is 1-2 month between
releases (not Beta's they are released very very often :-) ).
Many people asks if they can get the source code. The answer is
no, because i want keep the standard with PCMBOX, not having 10
PCMBOX with different behavior floating around like TCP/IP KA9Q
versions. There fore the only one to blame if you have some
errors to report, is me.
Do you have any problems, error reports or suggestions to PCMB-
