  10. I have three volumes of WPA transcribed archives (ca 1939) on the 
  11. ships registered in New Bedford, Massachusetts, 1796-1939.  There 
  12. are about 1200 pages of listings, alphabetized by ship name.  
  13. Each listing gives: name, rig, hailing port, date and place of 
  14. building, place of registry, tonnage and dimensions, names and 
  15. towns of masters (captains) and owner(s).  The masters and owners 
  16. names are indexed for each volume.
  17.         
  18. There were 20 other districts in Massachusetts, in addition to 
  19. New Bedford.  However, ships built in New Bedford were usually
  20. temporarily registered there, as were other ships temporarily 
  21. registered there for various reasons.  For example the 1796-1850 
  22. registrations include over 1200 ships from 182 different ports. 
  23.              
  24. There are three search parameters: person name, ship name, time
  25. period. I can search with only a person's name in the index of each
  26. of the three volumes.  If you know a time period, 1796-1850,
  27. 1851-1865, or 1866-1939, that will narrow the search.  If you know
  28. the ship, they are alphabetized in each volume.  Depending on the
  29. number of citations I find, we can decide what to do.  The entries
  30. are only about 10 lines long, but some ships were reregistered
  31. several times.

  33. In addition to having a ship named after him, (i.e. the whaling ship
  34. in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut), Charles W. Morgan was owner or part
  35. owner of four or five other ships.  Anyone related to an Edward D.
  36. Mandell has about 80 entries in one volume (about 13 ships) and about
  37. the same number in another volume.
