Welcome to Legend Of The Red Dragon's docs. This file was
created in such a way, to have you running the door in minutes,
then, when you want to register, or need help, you can delve
deeper for more information.
This is NOT a Role Playing Game, it is disguised as one sort
of, being set in medivel times, but this is really a war game
created for BBS's. Playing with real people is what makes it
fun.
LORD2.ZIP is freely distributable, but ONLY if it is NOT CHANGED
in ANY way, and the name remains LORD2.ZIP.
Legend Of The Red Dragon
Version 2.1
Compilation Date 12/14/92
Written by Seth Able Robinson
Copyright 1992: Robinson
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED!
People upgrading from 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 and 1.8B, just copy
all the files over your old ones, and run the LordCfg.exe
program and set your drop file type again. Thats it!
Upgrading from 2.0? Just copy it over all the old ones..
Mega Quick Docs and answers:
Is this game crippled or what?
Yes, but nothing has been taken out of the game until the player
trys to achieve level 7. His master will take him aside and
inform him he will not teach him until the game is registered.
So you will be able to see most everything about the game and
decide if it is worth registering, before you do. (there are
12 levels avaible when registered)
Also, the game, when registered, *CAN* be finished. The Red
Dragon can be slain, and his name entered on the Hall Of Honor.
Then, the game let people know it's been won, and by who, and
will not let anyone play until it is reset. (A option in
LordCfg.exe)
And, a registered game will allow you to use the built in
Player editor in LordCfg.exe.
What happens when I send you $15?
You are promply sent a unique registration code on paper.
You take the code, run LordCfg.exe, and enter it with the
'Enter Registration' option. Very easy. Once you do that,
LordCfg.exe and Lord.exe will know the game is registered.
Great...So how do I install it?
If it's your first time, read on...
If you are upgrading from a past version, skip this part, and
read the "Whats new in V2.1 section of the docs".
****************************HOW TO INSTALL LORD***************************
Step One:
Uncompress LORDV2.ZIP to it's own directory. Doesn't matter where.
Step Two:
Run LordCfg.EXE from the dos prompt. It's a menu driven, setup
program. You can set what type of Drop file you want LORD to
look for, your comport, and other things, you might want to
look at later. It completly explains everything, so I don't
need to type any docs to it...
Step Three:
Play it locally.
Type this from your dos prompt:
LORD /l
(The L slash makes it playable locally)
This step is to make sure everything is
working, before you spend the time to install it on your BBS.
Also, to make sure it is a worthwhile game, and worthy of
your system. (There are a LOT of Doors that I don't deem worth
of my system, after playing them once!) You can look around,
and see a few menus.. And see how smooth everything is.
(NOTE...LORD is the type of game that draws people back...People
spend about 7 to 15 minutes a day to play, and are forced to
call back tomorrow for a fuel up... A great everyday caller getter,
which works perfectly with an active message base)
Step Four:
Ok, you love the game, and know your users will love it
so much, they will want to register it for you...(Nearly half
of my registrations have mentioned that was the case!)
So now you want it to work with your BBS. To do so, your BBS
must execute only one line. You don't need a batch file, but
if thats what you usually use, just put this one line in the
.BAT file.
C:\DOORS\LORD /pc:\bbs
Ok, thats it... Of course, the first path, is so it will find
the lord.exe file. Once it does this, LORD will figure out what
directory it is in on it's own, you don't need to change directorys
to it's dir or anything.
The second path, is /p plus the full path to your main BBS dir,
or wherever LORD is supposed to find the drop file. (You did
specify which type to look for in LordCfg.exe, didn't you!??!)
If it won't work, check the "Trouble Shooting" portion at the
end of this file.

******************************MORE INFO ON LORD**************************
The following is other info you might want to know, or
need about LORD. Check the end for info on
registering.
REMEMBER..This is *NOT* freeware, it is shareware, if you
use this product, you MUST send in the shareware fee!

***What is Legend Of The Red Dragon?
This is the BEST 'play-every-day'
playing multi user, user fighting user, all
around fun game! Years in the making, months of
testing, and a lot of ideas from a lot of people have
made this game what it is.
***If this game is called Legend Of The Red Dragon, why do people
always call it LORD for short?
Well, with a little imagination, it's the games initals...
(L)egend (O)f the (R)ed (D)ragon....
***How do I set it up?
Read the Mega Quick docs in the beginning...
***How do I run it locally?
Try the Quick docs...
***How do I reset the game after someone wins?
There is an option in LORDCFG.EXE that does that for you.
If that has a problem, just delete PLAYER.DAT, LORD.CFG,
and it will reset the actual game...To reset the conversation
at the bar, delete BAR.TXT. Deleting anything that starts
with MAIL is also a good idea...Remember, the reset option
in LORDCFG.EXE does all this for you...
Also, deleting TIME.DAT will change LORD's 'days the current
game is going' to 0.
***What about maintainence?
LORD automatically runs its maintaintence when the first player
plays that day...It takes only a few seconds, so they won't even
notice.
(LORD will create a few files in the directory it is run from,
so don't fret if you see things like BAR.TXT, TIME.DAT LAST.DAT
and PLAYER.DAT created. When you reset the game with LORDCFG.EXE
it deletes all of them in the process)
Also, when it does run maintainence, it will also delete
inactive players. Default is if they are absent for 15
days...You can change the number, or disable this option, in
LordCfg.exe. If your clock screws up often, its a good idea
to turn this feature off.
***What about if I want the scores to be a bulletin?
LORD writes a file in its directory called SCORES.TXT
It has no ANSI, and will always have the current rankings
of the game!
If your BBS needs the scores bulletin to have a certain file
name, or to be in a certain place, just run lord from a bat,
and add a line like this at the end:
COPY C:\DOORS\LORD\SCORES.TXT C:\BBS\AFILES\BULLETIN3.TXT
or something...
***What if the user falls asleep, or runs out of time?
LORD will throw him off on both counts...
If it doesn't, try using a different drop file type.
***What can I do while a user is online playing Lord?
Press Alt H and it will list the commands avaible to you..
One is you can Chat at any time, (if the user supports ANSI
it will be in colors) one is you can up or lower the users
time..(arrow keys) But any changes will NOT be made permenent,
after the user is out of the door, it will be whatever it would
be if you hadn't changed it.. It will show who is on on a status
line at the bottom of your screen at all times.
Alt-J drops to dos, Alt-C chats, pressing escape exits the
chat mode.
***What if I want to run two games?
You should have no problems.
You can run as many as you want, even though I suggest
just running one, because more people will play it at one
time!
***What if I want to change the name of LORD.EXE?
The game will not work if you do.
***What if I want to edit users?
If your registered, that will be an option in Lordcfg.exe...
Very slick!
LordEd.EXE does not work with LORD 2.0 and never will, I mean,
who needs it, now that LordCfg.EXE has a built in player editor!?
***What if I have more than one node?
On the command string, add the node switch, which will tell
LORD what node your running it on, it looks like this.. /n1
The format is first the /n then the number of the node.
EXAMPLE...
C:\DOORS\LORDDIR\LORD.EXE /pC:\BBS /n1
(you can add the new switch anywhere...)
LORD does not support multi-node live battles, but players
can write mail to eachother, and carry out a live conversation
that way...
***How can I make my LORD game successful?
Make it easy to get to...(like LORD from the main menu...Or list it
first on your list of doors...More people will play it that
way...) Announce in your NEWS file that you now have it, and it
was just reset.. So everyone knows...Try to always reset at
midnight...Or early morning, so that everyone gets to start at the
same time! Give the door the above conditions, and it will THRIVE!
***What if I want to give someone credit for registering LORD?
Thats in option in the Configure menu in LordCfg.exe.

****************************REGISTRATION INFO*****************************
Send $15 to the address below, and
you will be SENT a REGISTRATION CODE, that you can input with
the LORDCFG.EXE program, easly! (the registration will work
with all future versions too)
I now have a very automated registration system, and can
now manage to usually send out registrations the day after
the check is recieved.
**NEW**
I now offer a "buddy system" option when registering LORD.
If you register more than 1 game at a time, the price goes
down to $10 instead of $15. This is to encourage you to
get together with local sysops and save some money!
So, for 2 registrations send $20..
For 8 send $80.... Simple!
******
Ok, if you have a printer, you might want to print this
registration form. Otherwise, try to include the same info
the form has. If you forget, your code will be sent to you
anyway, if I can find a return address! Other games are
forthcoming, so try to let me know which game you are
registering, eh?
If your doing the buddy system, please include each persons registration
info on a seperate form. (So I can put each guy on my mailing list,
and register it in each of your names)

This game is the result over 200 hours, and 5 years of my life.
I orginally wrote it on a Commodore 128, a one player version, similar
in a lot of ways. Then I moved on to a DOOR for the Amiga (TAG BBS), and
popular demand has lead me to write it for the IBM.. I hope you and
your users like it.. If you have ANY problems, call my support
BBS and let me know...Or write a letter... The BBS is..

for snail mail...) Remember, long distance out of state is
usually cheaper than in-state.
Even if you use the Quick Reg program, I will still send you
your U.S mail also.
**REMEMBER**
If you want to use the Quick Reg program, make SURE you mention
you are, and give me your name and handle on my BBS, or I cannot
gurantee I will e-mail you on the BBS. (If I happen to notice you
ARE a user, I will mail it to you tho)
************************HISTORY CRAP NO ONE READS***********************
Version 1:
It worked pretty well...But had a few tiny bugs..
Version 1.1:
Fixed those bugs, added a few small things..(like Gem selling)
Updating from 1:
To not reset the game, just overwrite your old LORD.EXE with
the new one, and also overwrite BUYARM.TXT...(it was wrong before..)
Version 1.3:
Fixed a few more bugs...An a few important ones...Hopefully this
version will work perfectly forever!
Updating from a previous version...just copy your new LORD.EXE over
your old one...
Version 1.5:
The perfect version at last!!! Fixed a bug that you couldn't
run, also the list players function is made a text file, and
skipable...
Version 1.6:
Fixed a bug where you could be hit by Rude Boy for 7000!
Version 1.7:
A lot of things changed, so now it is perfect....
LORDCFG.EXE can actually reset the game now!!!
After the game is won, it won't list the players...
You can't pick a name that is already being used...
Mispellings fixed...
Enemys made somewhat stronger...Makes it more interesting..Hehehe..
Version 1.8:
Hall Of Honor is added.
Now characters from LORD add to the conversation in an intellegent
way.
Negetive score at 32000 bug fixed.
You can now run LORD without adding the .EXE part.
Version 1.8B:
I had to fix all the bugs created in V1.8!! A few
of the conversation things weren't right, its perfect
now. Also, I have added a few things to make the game
more fun to play. Also, I have included a special
note at the end of this file about how to make LORD
run if you are having problems. I am sending it
US mail to everyone who has registered. (thanks people, I
love you all!)
Version 2.0:
Twelve Levels now instead of 6...
double the masters, 133 monsters, each with a SPECIAL
way to die....If killed with a power move..
5 Bar room startup screens instead of 1...Picked
randomly at startup..
More Forest Events, more player lamentations for the log.
Full female support.
All new LordCfg.exe program, completly re-done..
including a player editer for registered sysops.
Both .exe's use a new 'No Hassle' style, which means
EITHER program will study your current setup, and
update the files around it to work with 2.0..
You don't have to reset!
A million little things to make the game more
enjoyable, bigger, and easier to use.
Version 2.1:
I sort of cleaned out V2.0, fixed a few places where sometimes
users thought it froze, when it was just waiting for a certain
input, and not refreshing the menus.
I added a few new Forest events...
I added a bunch more bar conversation possiblities... I love
that function! It's wierd when a character from the game adds
to the conversation, and it makes perfect sense....
I fixed a few places where I wasn't getting a true random
number...
Now LORD will randomly use different Intro.ans's at startup,
at the time of this printing, I only have two... But I would
like to have like ten! If you are an ansi artist, and want
to do one, upload it to me at my BBS...If it's good, I'll use
it, and put your name in these docs somewhere...
Added an option to delete a player, in the Player Editor of
LordCfg.exe. (Muchly needed!)
I fixed a few other bugs, added the knowledge that Ctrl-c will
skip the intro ansi to the 'I'instructions option...
*********************************CREDITS***********************************
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Special thanks to Scott M. Baker, for doing a great job with
Doordriver...It let me skip straight to working on the game...
Intro1.ans by David Nicholson.
*****************************TROUBLE SHOOTING***********************
**LORD gives me a blank screen when I try to play it from my BBS locally!
..Well... I heard higher versions of WildCat suffer this problem,
but it does work perfectly with remote users.
**LORD is crashing sometimes?
..Ok, are you running anything else in EMS memory? Try taking those
things out if you are.
**LORD Won't work at all with my BBS!?
..If you are not using a fossil driver, try using one...Use LORD
with a .bat file, and load it before running LORD, and unloading
it after LORD is run.
Or, try using LORDs internal com routine option. (An option
in Lordcfg.exe)
**LORD Deleted a player that was still playing!!! And now he is mad!
..Ok, maybe LORD doesn't like your clock... Just disable the
auto delete function... Set the days until deleting an inactive
player to 0. (It's an option in LordCfg.exe) If you need to
delete players to make room for new ones, just use the delete
option in the Player editor in LordCfg.exe...If your registered...
**None of the above work... LORD just won't work with my BBS no matter
what I do!!
Try using a different drop file. Use DoorMaster or something, and
convert it to something else...Don't forget to change the type
in LordCfg.exe also when you do this.
For some reason, that fixes MOST setup problems.
If that fails, it could be a memory problem your looking at.
Find ways to give LORD more memory, like swapping your
BBS to disk, or taking out high memory things you had in there..
LORD has become a very large door...Thats good in some ways, bad
in others... Mostly good tho!
**I had a problem, but I'm a genuis, and solved it...
..Really? Send me the info, and I will stick it on this trouble
shooting list... Come 'on now, share it with the rest of us!
