  23. 1. General Notes
  24. ================
  25.   IMPORTANT!
  26.   You must IMPERATIVELY read this README file and all the documentation
  27.   supplied BEFORE you continue the installation!
  28.   Otherwise SPEA cannot accept any responsibility for claims that may be
  29.   caused as a consequence.
  30.  
  31.   Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
  32.   features provided by the MIRAGE VIDEO, if the other components of
  33.   your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
  34.   also comply with the specifications of the MIRAGE VIDEO.
  35.   (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  36.   MIRAGE VIDEO can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  37.   specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768).

  39. 2. Installation
  40. ===============
  41.   SPEA offers the MIRAGE VIDEO with and without a MPEG hardware
  42.   module. The installation detects automaticly the module and
  43.   uses the right installation.
  44.  
  45.   The program calls stated below refer to the installation from the
  46.   SPEA installation disks and the SPEA Media Gallery CD ('MG-CD').
  47.  
  48. 2.1 Installation under DOS
  49. ==========================
  50. Note:
  51.   Before you start the installation you should know where (drive and 
  52.   directory) your applications are installed for which you wish to
  53.   install driver software.
  54.  
  55.   Start the installation from
  56.   a) Disk with               b) MG-CD with
  57.      A:\                        <CD drive>:
  58.      INSTALL                    SPEAINST
  59.  
  60.   After the installation it will normally be necessary to reconfigure
  61.   your applications for the new driver software. The steps necessary
  62.   to achieve this are described in the manuals.
  63.  
  64.   VESA Modes:
  65.   -----------
  66.   VESA mode support is integrated in the BIOS of the MIRAGE VIDEO.
  67.  
  68.   MicroStation:
  69.   -------------
  70.   A SPEA driver for MicroStation is currently not available. As soon as
  71.   this is rectified, the driver will be placed at your disposal via
  72.   our BBS and CompuServe.
  73.  
  74. 2.2 Installation under Windows / Windows 95
  75. ===========================================
  76.   Note: The install program detects your operatin system and installs
  77.   the correct drivers. 
  78.   
  79.   Select the menu items 'File' and then 'Run' in the Windows Program
  80.   Manager. Then enter:
  81.  
  82.   a) (Disk)                  b) (MG-CD)
  83.      A:\SETUP                   <CD drive>:SPEAINST
  84.  
  85. Note:
  86.   If you intend to use the DOS programs SPTUNE and S3TEST under
  87.   Windows 95 then you must do this via the Explorer ('Start', 'Run')
  88.   using the path C:\SPEA\GDC\SPTUNE for example, and NOT via a DOS
  89.   box.

  92. 2.3 Installation under OS/2 Warp
  93. ================================
  94.   The Driver for OS/2 are not finished till the release date of the CD-ROM.
  95.   Please turn to the SPEA Mailbox.
  96.  
  97.   To install other drivers and tools z.B. for Win-OS/2, start Win-OS/2 
  98.   and continue as described in section 2.2
  99.  
  100. 2.4 Installing the Windows NT 3.5 Driver
  101. ========================================
  102.   The Driver for NT are not finished till the release date of the CD-ROM.
  103.   Please turn to the SPEA Mailbox.

  105. 3.  Choosing a Monitor
  106. ======================
  107.   As mentioned above, the graphics monitor you choose to use with
  108.   your board should be technically suitable for use with your
  109.   MIRAGE VIDEO board in order to be able fully utilize this.
  110.  
  111.   The display refresh rate for graphical user interface operating
  112.   systems (Windows [95], OS/2 and Windows NT) is selected using
  113.   the corresponding program V7SETUP, V7SETOS2 and V7SETNT.
  114.  
  115.   Extended tuning (with display image positioning) and the selection
  116.   of the display refresh rate for DOS programs such as AutoCAD for 
  117.   DOS, is made with the program SPEAtune (SPTUNE).
  118.  
  119. Note:
  120.   SPTUNE is exclusively programmed for use under DOS.
  121.   
  122.                  *** IMPORTANT ***
  123.  
  124.   Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you use the monitor
  125.   outside the specified ratings then it may suffer permanent damage!
  126.   If you change the monitor then you must compare the ratings first
  127.   and should reconfigure with SPTUNE accordingly!
  128.  
  129.  
  130. 4.  Known Restrictions
  131. ======================
  132.  
  133.   (1) It is generally not possible to use more than one active VGA
  134.   board simultaneously in a PC.
  135.   If your PC has a VGA adapter on the motherboard and you wish to use
  136.   the MIRAGE VIDEO, then you must deactivate the VGA adapter in the
  137.   PC first.
  138.  
  139. 5.  Notes on Applications
  140. =========================
  141.   Seperate README files exist for the applications supported by the
  142.   MIRAGE VIDEO. These contain information on last-minute changes
  143.   that could not be included in the manual. They also contain 
  144.   information concerning known restrictions.
  145.   The README files are also copied to the \SPEA\GDC directory during 
  146.   the software installation when you select a driver. The files have
  147.   the extension .DOC.
  148.   You can view the respective README files by entering SHOW *.DOC.
  149.  
  150.   Example:

  155. 6.  Corrections to the Manual
  156. =============================
  157.   
  158.   MIRAGE VIDEO and SPEA Ergonomic Modes up to 100 Hz:
  159.   -------------------------------------------------------
  160.   The BIOS of your MIRAGE VIDEO supports all available resolutions
  161.   up to a frequency of 75 Hz. An additional software solution (SPTUNE)
  162.   also makes refresh rates up to 100 Hz possible. An overview of the
  163.   frequencies available can be found in the file BIOS.TXT.
  164.   Important: the SPEA ergonomic modes with frequencies over 75 Hz are
  165.   only active if the program 'V7HFREQ' has been called with the parameter
  166.   't' (Windows 95: V7HFREQ tw). For this reason, a corresponding call 
  167.   is placed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file during the installation.
  168.  
  169.   S3TEST:
  170.   -------
  171.   S3TEST is a program provided to test your graphics board for errors. It
  172.   check whether the board is correctly functioning together with your PC.
  173.   During the testing phase (which can take a few seconds), a number of
  174.   different color patterns will be displayed on your monitor (these are
  175.   different according to the board being tested). The patterns created 
  176.   are the result of technical tests and do NOT represent an error on
  177.   your board. An accurate result is shown at the end of the test routine.

  179. 7.  SPEA Software AG: Support / Service / Latest Software
  180. =========================================================
  181.  
  182.   Technical support for the installation and configuration of SPEA
  183.   graphic boards and multimedia products, as well as software updates
  184.   (or optional software packages) are available:

  186.   - from the SPEA V7 Mailbox (Bulletin Board Service)
  187.   - in the SPEA forum of CompuServe (GO SPEA)
  188.   - via the Media Gallery CD
  189.   - via the SPEA Support Hotline

  191.     * only within Germany, DM 1,15/Minute, per 10.7.95)

  193.   The Media Gallery CD is SPEA's CD-ROM which appears monthly with the
  194.   magazines PC-DIrekt and PC Anwender. It is also available via your
  195.   national distributor.

  197.   Notes and tips on use of the SPEA V7 Mailbox can be found in the
  198.   file MAILBOX.DOC.
