  28.   **The Playa**
  29.  
  30.   The Playa is the media player of choice for DivX content. New features
  31.   include higher performance and visual quality, progressive download so
  32.   you can playback before the download is complete, and the ability to
  33.   play broken AVI files. From the people that brought you DivX(tm) video
  34.   technology.

  36.   **The DivX Codec**
  37.  
  38.   The DivX(tm) codec v4.0 is the latest and greatest release of DivX,
  39.   the best compression technology for high-resolution movies.  The DivX
  40.   codec (short for COmpression-DECompression) is becoming the standard
  41.   for high quality video over IP networks because it hits the sweet spot
  42.   between superior visual quality and small file size. With a broadband
  43.   connection, you can download a full-length feature film in the time it
  44.   takes to have a pizza delivered!

  46.   **The Validator**
  47.  
  48.   The Validator will check the directory of your choice for "Authentic"
  49.   DivX files. If it truly is a DivX file it will rename the file
  50.   extension to *.divx.  Why?  Well there is a ton of content encoded in
  51.   DivX and we know that this content is hard to find through search
  52.   engines because right now it uses the *.avi file extension which could
  53.   really be any codec.  We also know that there are individuals who
  54.   actually place "DivX" in the name of their files when they are truly
  55.   not DivX so that you will be more inclined to download it, since
  56.   "DivX" is known now as content that is encoded with High Quality. 
  57.   Well we want to make sure that content that is truly is DivX is easy
  58.   to find and that the DivX name lives on.

  61. Installation instructions
  62. -------------------------
  63.  
  64.   To install the Playa, Codec and Validator, you should follow the
  65.   following simple steps:
  66.  
  67.   1. Copy the installer program (DivX4Bundle.exe) to a location on your
  68.      hard drive (e.g., C:\temp).
  69.   2. Run the installer program by double-clicking on the
  70.      deainstaller.exe icon.  
  71.   3. Follow the instructions of the installer program to install the
  72.      The Playa.  
  73.   4. Done! The Playa, CODEC, and Validator should be installed in your 
  74.      Systems directory.

  76.   **What files are installed?**: The Playa installer will install the
  77.   following files on your system:
  78.   
  79.   * ThePlaya.exe        (DivX Player executable)
  80.   * divx.dll             (DivX Codec) 
  81.   * divxdec.ax            (DivX Decoder Filter) 
  82.   * Help.chm            (DivX Help File)
  83.   * Validator.exe        (Validator executable)
  84.   * README.txt            (This README file.)
  85.   * License.txt            (License agreement for the CODEC.)

  87.   **Uninstalling the DivX Codec**: To remove the DivX Codec from your
  88.   system, you should use the "Add/Remove Programs" control panel in
  89.   Windows. To this by selecting "Start -> Settings -> Control Panel ->
  90.   Add/Remove Programs" from the Windows Start menu. In the listbox that
  91.   is presented to you, choose "DivX 4.0 Beta Codec" and click "remove."

  97.   How do I use this thing?  Please refer to the Help File included in
  98.   the installer.  You can find the help file in Start -> Programs ->
  99.   DivX -> DivX Codec -> Help

  102. Using the Validator
  103. -------------------

  105.   Just double click the validator on your Programs menu and the
  106.   Validator will do the rest. It will, upon request, rename all files
  107.   with a DIV3, DIV4, and DIVX FOURCC code to use a *.divx extension.
  108.   This removes the ambiguity associated with the *.avi extension.

  160.  ** Bugs Fixed in the DivX 4.0 (Beta 3) release:**

  162. * DivX decoder registered itself for 3.x formats even if user answered 
  163.   "No" when installing
  164. * Found one more bug in 3.x decoder
  165. * Fixed problem with quality loss when encoding at height 
  166.   not multiple of 16 and low resolution
  167. * Fixed crash when encoding on Pentium II / Celeron machines 
  168.   (accidentally introduced in beta 2)
  169. * Fixed noise problems in playing 3.x content
  170. * More accurate 2-pass VBR

  173.   ** Bugs fixed in the DivX 4.0 (Beta 2) release:**

  175. * DivX DirectShow filter did not work on Windows NT 4.0
  176. * Encoding was broken at very high bitrates. You would receive scrambled
  177.   picture if you tried to encode either in quality-based VBR at quality
  178.   level >=95% or in two-pass VBR at bitrates roughly higher than
  179.   1500-2000 Kbps
  180. * Decoder was crashing in some cases on Pentium II and Celeron machines
  181.   (a few SSE instructions were accidentally put into MMX YUV->RGB
  182.   conversion routines)
  183. * Decoder was crashing with post-processing level 6 or 7 and 16*N <
  184.   height <= 16*N+8
  185. * Fixed on obscure DivX 3.x decoder incompatibility issue
  186. * DivX decoder filter was crashing when used by BSPlayer
  187.   (http://bsplayer.cjb.net)
  188. * There was a parameter in encoder settings, which was called
  189.   "crispness" in the configuration dialog and "frame dropping" in the
  190.   help file. It is now correctly called "frame dropping" in the
  191.   configuration dialog.
  192. * In the help file, on the page about post-processing, there was a
  193.   duplicate paragraph, written in a slightly different way. This
  194.   duplicate paragraph has been removed.
  195. * The "About" dialog box of the codec showed an unreadable character
  196.   after the word "DivX." On machines with installed Russin it is a
  197.   trademark symbol, but there are lots of machines out there which do
  198.   not have Russian fonts. :-) This has been fixed.
