  1. TITLE:  After installing s3 svga the system boots to a black 
  2.        screen w/ blinking cursor.
  3.  
  4. DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
  5.  
  6. Systems will boot to a black screen w/ a blinking cursor 
  7.        in the upper left hand corner when:
  8.  
  9. 1.  There is a hardware conflict meaning two or more device are
  10.        sharing the same irq, i/o address, and/or dma
  11.        parameters.
  12. 2.  The latest drivers are not being used or if another vender's
  13.        drivers, that are not supported, are in use.
  14. 3.  An unsupported video mode is installed.
  15.  
  16. SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:

  18. 1.  Make sure there are no hardware conflict as explained above.
  19. 2.  Make the correct s3 drivers are in use.
  20.  
  21. DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
  22.  
  23. 1.  Reboot the system from the A drive and get to the 
  24.        command prompt using the os2 boot diskettes.
  25. 2.  Run either "set vga" or "rspdspi" to set the system back to 
  26.        vga.
  27. 3.  Reboot the system.  The desktop should now appear.
  28. 4.  Verify that no devices are sharing the parameters described
  29.        above(irq, dma, i/o address).  Video devices usually use 
  30.        irq 2/9 and i/0 address 02e8.  Network cards often use 
  31.        these same parameters.  Do not use this as a rule
  32.        of thumb, the paramenters could vary from system to system.
  33. 5.  Make sure you have the correct os2 drivers to install. 
  34.        The correct drivers would be the latest version of the
  35.        driver that is supported.  If the service pak or a release
  36.        containing the drivers is installed then those drivers that
  37.        came w/ them must be utilized.
  38. 6.  Reinstall the s3 drivers using the "dspinstl" command.
  39. 7.  Reboot.
