- Diamond Speedstar Adapter
- If video synch problems exist in an OS/2 full screen session or desktop
- but go away temporarily after a DOS full screen session is entered, make
- sure that you have executed SVGA ON from a DOS full screen session and
- performed a shutdown. Prior to executin g this command, search for a file
- \OS2\SVGDATA.PMI. If the file exists, delete it and regenerate it by
- executing SVGA ON from a DOS command prompt. If you have a blurred strip
- across the desktop or are experiencing other types of video synch
- problems, y ou may try to regenerate the PMI configuration file by
- deleting the old PMI file and running the DOS TSR VMODE utility and
- selecting the highest resolution /refresh rate mode. in DOS full screen
- session. After the mode was successfully set, exit the util ity and
- execute SVGA ON and reboot. SVGDATA.PMI file contains the register
- information for video modes supported by your adapter and is used by two
- drivers: BSVHSVGA.DLL in OS/2 full screen and by VSVGA.SYS in DOS full
- screen. Correct video driver stateme nts in the CONFIG.SYS for SVGA
- support should be as follows: SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA, BVHSVGA)
- DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS where x is your OS/2 system drive letter.
-
- If video goes out of synch when switching from DOS or WIN-OS2 session to
- the desktop, check the ET4000 SVGA chipset on the video adapter and record
- the batch number. If the batch is TC6059AF or higher, call the 800
- support number back and reactivate you r call with a request to be queued
- to OS2FIX queue. Ask for the fix for APAR PJ03677 to be mailed to you.
- The fix contains an updated VSVGA.SYS driver.
-
- If you have a blurred strip across the top of the desktop and have your
- adapter set for the highest vertical refresh rate, try regenerating the
- PMI file as explained above. It is important to run the VMODE utility and
- select the highest refresh rate mode prior to running SVGA ON.
-
- Recommended video BIOS revision for this adapter is 4.23. Contact Diamond
- about the BIOS upgrade.
-
- If you have intermittent video problems using DOS full screen session, set
- DOS settings for that icon as follows: HW_ROM_TO_RAM to ON, DOS_RMSIZE to
- 624. Settings screen can be reached by clicking with the right mouse
- button over the icon, selecting "Open settings" and going to the "Session"
- page in the notebook.
-
- Diamond Stealth adapter
- This adapter is currently not supported in high resolution mode. This
- however should not cause installation problems. After the installation is
- completed, edit the CONFIG.SYS and change the video related statements
- from SVGA to VGA (refer to the General c onsiderations section for the
- outline of the VGA support). Recommended video BIOS revision is 2.32 for
- this adapter. Contact Diamond about the BIOS upgrade.
-
- Diamond Speedstar 24X Card Configuration
- The following information is necessary for the proper configuration of the
- Diamond Speedstar 24X card and the CTX 5648NI monitor. They are
- incorrectly identified by the OS/2 installation process as an IBM 8514A
- adapter and a SONY 1302 monitor. One of the following changes must be
- made to the CONFIG.SYS:
-
- SET VIO VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA,BVHSVGA)
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA (Super VGA set)
-
- (assuming you have the IBM corrective service update of the file
- "BVHSVGA.DLL" copied into the C:\OS2\DLL directory)
-
- -OR-
-
- SET VIO VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
- DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS ( Standard VGA set)
-
- (OS/2 2.0 will use standard VGA 640x480x16 mode for DOS, WIN/OS2, and OS/2
- screens no matter which set you choose.)
-
- Once you make one of the above corrections, there will still be a problem
- with the WIN/OS2 screen being out of synchronization, off center, and
- reduced in size. This problem can be corrected by running 24XMODE from a
- DOS session. Choose "Custom" under monitor selection and use the highest
- acceptable non-interlaced rate (60-70hz) for 640, 800, and 1024
- resolutions; then save the configuration. Add the line "24XMODE MONITOR"
- to the OS/2 AUTOEXEC.BAT. You must choose "Shutdown" from the workplace
- Shell to save/reboot so that the changes may take affect. This assumes
- that the Speedstar 24X utility " 24XMODE.COM" is loaded in the root
- directory of the boot drive.
-
- General considerations
- Our PM desktop device driver supports only 640x480x16 mode (pure VGA).
- SVGA support is intended to provide higher resolution modes for DOS and
- VIO applications only! IBM is interested in helping video manufacturers
- provide high resolution PM video support
-
- Please contact Diamond Systems regarding the PM driver availability.
-
- You can obtain more information on SVGA support from the README file ( in
- INFORMATION folder) . Basic VGA OS/2 support statements in CONFIG.SYS VGA
- should be as follows:
-
- SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
- DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS
-
- where x is your OS/2 system drive letter.
-
- If your desktop video is corrupted intermittently, run CHKDSK from an OS/2
- command prompt to determine if any hard disk problems exist. If so, boot
- OS/2 from the installation disk and press ESC when the first instruction
- screen is displayed (you'll see this screen shortly after disk 1 has been
- inserted). This will return you to an OS/2 A: command prompt. Run
- CHKDSK C: /F to repair any inconsistencies on your drive. Replace C:
- with your boot drive letter if yours is different.
-
- Using HPFS on systems with less than 6MB RAM sometimes causes problems
- that seem to be video related but are not (blank screen, missing icons,
- etc...). You may want to consider a FAT file system for your hard drive
- if you experience problems.
-
- You should also check your motherboard BIOS date to determine if you will
- need an update. AMI BIOS should be dated no earlier than 4/9/90 although
- we recommend using AMI BIOS dated 5/9/91 or later. Phoenix BIOS should be
- dated no earlier than 5/11/92 ( they recently corrected a bug that was
- causing problems with OS/2).
-
- If your DOS application is using a video mode which is not supported by
- our DOS full screen drivers, you may install all DOS video related drivers
- and mode utilities in OS/2 CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. You may also
- specify DOS video driver DEVICE stateme nt in DOS_DEVICE setting in the
- DOS SETTINGS for the desired DOS session.
