  8. This document contains frequently asked questions about printing
  9. from OS/2 Warp.
  10.  
  11. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  12. 1.  I installed OS/2 Warp and now I can't print.  I could print
  13.     under OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.11.  What do you recommend?
  14.  
  15. Try editing the CONFIG.SYS statement BASEDEV=PRINT0x.SYS
  16. and add /IRQ.
  17.  
  18. For the correct syntax, refer to the OS/2 COMMAND REFERENCE under
  19. PRINT01 or PRINT02.  Using /IRQ directs the parallel port device
  20. driver to use the interrupt method to print, instead of polling
  21. which is the default in Warp.  After adding this change to the
  22. CONFIG.SYS, you must restart the system because the CONFIG.SYS is
  23. read only during system startup.
  24.

  26. 2.  I installed OS/2 Warp and now I need to install a windows
  27.     printer driver.  How do I do this?
  28.  
  29. If you need to add a Windows printer driver after installing this
  30. version of OS/2, you must install the printer driver from the
  31. Windows Control Panel.
  32.  
  33. To install the Windows driver when creating a printer
  34. object from the OS/2 side:
  35.  
  36.   1.  Create a new printer by dragging a printer template
  37.       from the Templates folder.
  38.   2.  Install the OS/2 driver, if not already installed.
  39.   3.  Press the Create push button.
  40.   4.  You are be asked if you wish to install an equivalent
  41.       WINOS2 printer configuration.  Select YES and you are
  42.       prompted to insert the proper diskette.
  43.  
  44. Note: that if there is NOT an equivalent Windows driver, you
  45. are not prompted to install an equivalent driver.  Only the
  46. printer drivers that shipped with Windows 3.1 are included in
  47. OS/2 Warp.  The drivers are not updated and new printer models
  48. are not included.  New Windows printer drivers must be obtained
  49. from either Microsoft or the printer manufacturer.

  52. 3.  Does Warp support automatic parallel port printer sharing
  53.     boxes?
  54.  
  55. Contact your hardware vendor to see if the box has been tested
  56. with OS/2 Warp.
  57.  
  58. You may be able to use this device with OS/2 Warp if you are
  59. using the polling method of printing.  DOS uses the polling
  60. method of printing and supports the automatic sharing boxes.
  61. The OS/2 parallel port device driver does not support these
  62. devices in OS/2 2.x releases.  You can, however, test the box
  63. with polling on Warp.  To make sure polling is being used,
  64. type RMVIEW /IRQ at a command prompt.  IRQ7 should NOT be
  65. associated with the parallel port.
  66.

  68. 4.  What is RMVIEW in OS/2 Warp?
  69.  
  70. RMVIEW is a utility included in Warp to help resolve IRQ
  71. conflicts.  To use RMVIEW:
  72.  
  73.   1.  Open an OS/2 Window or Full Screen session.
  74.   2.  Type RMVIEW and press Enter.
  75.  
  76.       RMVIEW HELP provides the switches available, for example:
  77.       -  RMVIEW /IO
  78.       -  RMVIEW /IRQ
  79.  
  80. If you have /IRQ in the CONFIG.SYS (using the interrupt driven
  81. methodology), RMVIEW /IRQ displays IRQ Level = 7.
  82.  
  83. If you do not have /IRQ and are using the default (or polling),
  84. there is no reference to IRQ7.
  85.  
  86. If you have a DMA enabled system and install Warp, the default
  87. is the interrupt driven printing protocol and /IRQ is not in the
  88. CONFIG.SYS.
  89.  
  90. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  91. 5.  When do you use the Warp Omni driver?
  92.  
  93. Support for the Deskjet, Epson and Paintjet drivers has been
  94. merged into one driver called the Omni driver.  The Deskjet,
  95. Paintjet and Epson drivers are also provided on the printer
  96. diskettes.
  97.  
  98. It is preferred that the Omni driver be used when printing to the
  99. Deskjet, Paintjet or Epson printers.  The only time the other
  100. drivers should be used is when the system is network attached
  101. and printing to a 2.1 server that is currently using the 2.1
  102. drivers.  In this case the Epson, Paintjet and Deskjet drivers
  103. should be installed on the workstation.
  104.  
  105. If the Deskjet, Paintjet or Epson driver is desired, it can be
  106. installed by selecting "Other OS/2 printer driver" and typing in
  107. the path where the driver is located in the printer INSTALL
  108. dialog box.
  109.

  111. 6.  Why does the Pulse mini-app indicate my system is being
  112.     fully utilized by printing in Warp?
  113.  
  114. When running the Pulse mini-app in OS/2 Warp and printing at the
  115. same time, Pulse could show the system is nearly 100% utilized.
  116. This is due to polling, the default configuration for the
  117. parallel port when no /IRQ switch is added to the
  118. BASEDEV=PRINT0x.SYS statement in the CONFIG.SYS.
  119.  
  120. When not many applications are running on the system, polling
  121. occurs continuously during printing.  This causes Pulse to
  122. realize the system is being fully utilized by print; however, the
  123. system is functioning normally.  As other programs are started,
  124. they start to get time slices on the system.  They run normally
  125. due to the system's pre-emptive multitasking ability with task
  126. scheduling.  Therefore, multiple applications can function
  127. properly while printing, even though Pulse indicates 100%
  128. utilization.
  129.

  131. 7.  I am printing to a Lexmark 4029 printer under Warp with the
  132.     IBMPCL5 driver.  Printing from the command line works, but PM
  133.     printing appears corrupt.  I did not have a problem under
  134.     OS/2 2.1.
  135.  
  136. The 4029 printer comes with PCL3 support.  The IBMPCL5 driver
  137. sends PCL5 data and can only be used with a IBM4029 that has the
  138. additional hardware to upgrade to PCL5 emulation.  This hardware
  139. consists of a "daughter card" that plugs into the main circuit
  140. board to give PCL5, like the Postscript option.  If you are not
  141. using an application that requires PCL5, try using another
  142. driver.
  143.

  145. 8.  Can I install a Warp driver on an OS/2 2.11 system?
  146.  
  147. Due to changes to the printer device drivers and diskette formats
  148. in OS/2 Warp, problems could occur if these drivers are not
  149. correctly installed on any OS/2 2.11 system.  Several of the
  150. printer drivers have been upgraded to 32bit and before installing
  151. them, their 16bit counterpart should be deleted.
  152.  
  153. The diskette format for the drivers on OS/2 Warp has been changed
  154. to 1.88 MB.  Before installing these 32-bit drivers on an OS/2
  155. v2.11 system, the drivers have to be copied to a 1.44 MB
  156. diskette and their 16-bit counterparts deleted.
  157.  
  158.             -    IBMNULL driver        (IBMNULL.DR_)
  159.             -    LASERJET driver       (LASERJET.DR_)
  160.             -    OMNI driver           (OMNI.DR_)
  161.             -    PLOTTER driver        (PLOTTERS.DR_)
  162.             -    IBMPCL3 driver        (IBMPCL3.DR_)
  163.             -    IBMPCL5 driver        (IBMPCL5.DR_)
  164.             -    IBM42XX driver        (IBM42XX.DR_)
  165.             -    IBM4019 driver        (IBM4019.DR_)

  167. On the OS/2 Warp system:
  168.  
  169.    Copy the (driver).DR_ and (driver).EA_ from the Warp diskettes
  170.    to a formatted 1.44 MB diskette.
  171.  
  172. On the target OS/2 2.11 system:
  173.  
  174. 1.  Delete any jobs in the queue associated with the Laserjet driver.
  175.  
  176. 2.  Open the printer object settings and select the IBMNULL printer
  177.     driver as the default (or any other driver that is not in the
  178.     family of the driver you want to install, ie..LASERJET) and
  179.     close the SETTINGS notebook.  Do this for all printer objects
  180.     that selected this family printer driver as its default.
  181.  
  182. 3.  Perform shutdown and restart the system.  Shutdown must be
  183.     done to ensure the appropriate driver changes are saved.
  184.  
  185. 4.  When the system restarts, open printer object Settings and go
  186.     to Printer Driver page and delete all drivers of that family
  187.     type.
  188.  
  189. 5.  Select Yes when you are prompted: "Do you want to
  190.     delete the files associated with this printer driver from
  191.     your fixed disk?"
  192.  
  193. 6.  Click the right mouse button on the default printer driver and
  194.     select Install.
  195.  
  196. 7.  The Install New Printer Driver dialog appears.  Select
  197.     Other OS/2 Printer Driver, using A:\ as the default directory.
  198.  
  199. 8.  Insert the 1.44 MB diskette that contains the Warp
  200.     (driver).DR_ and (driver).EA_ files in drive A: and select
  201.     Refresh. Available drivers are displayed.
  202.  
  203. 9.  Select the appropriate printer driver and select the Install
  204.     push button.
  205.  
  206. 10. Select the driver as default and close printer object settings.
  207.     The object should be available for use.
  208.  
  209. NOTES:
  210. If the OMNI driver has been installed on an OS/2 2.11 system and
  211. high color support is desired, unpack the LASERJET.DR_ file from
  212. Warp Printer Driver Diskette 1 and copy the PRE32.DLL into the same
  213. directory as the OMNI driver (see the Warp Command Reference for
  214. information on UNPACK).
  215.  
  216. The 16-bit versions of the Paintjet, Deskjet and Epson drivers are
  217. included on the Warp Printer Driver Diskettes.  If these updated
  218. versions must be used, copy the (driver).DR_ and (driver).EA_ files
  219. from the Warp 1.88 MB diskette to a 1.44 MB formatted diskette and
  220. install as normal on the OS/2 2.11 system.  When you open the
  221. Printer
  222. Install dialog, select Other OS/2 Printer Driver as described in
  223. question 5.

  226. 9.  Is there a user option to switch between polling and the
  227.      interrupt driven printing protocol in Warp?
  228.  
  229. Currently, the polling protocol is the default on all parallel
  230. ports, except for michrochannel parallel ports that have DMA
  231. enabled.  If you want to go back to the interrupt driven printing
  232. protocol, you must add /IRQ after the BASEDEV=PRINT0x.sys in the
  233. CONFIG.SYS.
  234.  
  235. There are currently no plans to provide a user option via the
  236. print object or some other methodology (other than on boot) to
  237. switch between the two printing protocols.  There's no API that
  238. the spooler can use to switch between polling and interrupt
  239. driven.
  240.

  242. 10. There's no error reported, but the install process appears to
  243.     hang when I try to install an OS/2 driver from Warp printer
  244.     diskette 3.
  245.  
  246. There are no OS/2 printer drivers printer driver diskette 3 for
  247. Warp.  All drivers are Windows drivers.  Select Cancel, insert
  248. the diskette containing the OS/2 driver, and retry the operation.
  249.
