- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- METHODS FOR RESTORING A CORRUPTED DESKTOP
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
- NOTE: METHOD 5 IS TO BE USED WITH IBM VALUEPOINT MACHINES.
-
- There may be cases where your desktop is corrupted. For
- example, if you started DOS and tried to rearrange your hard
- disk and corrupted either .INI files or Extended Attributes.
- The following procedures have been implemented to help in these
- cases. There are three methods of restoring your desktop, one
- dummy method, and Method 5 is for the IBM PS ValuePoints.
-
- Read ALL methods before proceeding.
-
- METHOD 1 - REBUILDING THE DESKTOP
- The method migrates your current desktop configuration by
- merging new initialization files with your corrupt
- initialization files. You can use this procedure if you do
- not want to replace both the CONFIG.SYS and the DESKTOP.
- With this method, you do NOT loose your customization.
-
- X: is where OS/2 resides
- 1. Go to a command prompt from diskettes.
- 2. Insert OS/2 Diskette 2 and type:
-
- For FAT systems: CHKDSK X: /F and Press Enter
- For HPFS systems: CHKDSK X: /F:2 and Press Enter
-
- Run CHKDSK repeatedly, until it reports no errors
-
- 3. Change to the drive containing OS/2.
- 4. Switch to the OS2 sub-directory. Type:
-
- X:\OS2 and press Enter
-
- 5. At the command line type:
-
- ATTRIB OS2*.INI -R and press Enter
- MAKEINIOS2.INI INI.RC and press Enter
- MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter
-
- 6. At the command line use ATTRIB command to delete the hidden
- file WP ROOT.SF in the OS2 startable partition. Type:
-
- ATTRIB X:\WP?ROOT.?SF -s -r -h and press Enter
- DEL X:\WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter
-
- 7. Remove Diskette and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the
- system. This replaces desktop by using the new .INI files.
- 8. It is highly recommended to do an immediate SHUTDOWN after
- the system is installed to make sure that all programs and
- files have been associated correctly. Select SHUTDOWN on
- the system menu.
-
-
- METHOD 2 - TEMPORARY METHOD OF INI RESTORATION
- This is similar to Method 1, except that it initializes the
- desktop with temporary INI files, also referred as DUMMY INI's.
- 1. Open up an OS/2 window
- 2. At the command prompt, Type:
-
- CD\OS2 and press Enter
- MAKEINI OS21.INI INI.RC and press Enter
- MAKEINI OS2SYS1.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter
- NOTE: INI file names have a 1 at the end of the name.
-
- 3. Edit the CONFIG.SYS: At the command prompt, Type:
-
- CD\ and press Enter
- E CONFIG.SYS and press Enter
-
- 4. Change the following lines located near top of CONFIG.SYS:
-
- SET USER_INI=C:\OS2\OS2.INI
- SET SYSTEM_INI=C:\OS2\OS2SYS.INI
- to read as follows:
- SET USER_INI=C:\OS2\OS21.INI
- SET SYSTEM_INI=C:\OS2\OS2SYS1.INI
-
- 5. Select File. Select Save. Select Close.
- 6. Do a proper SHUTDOWN and restart the system.
- 7. If these steps solved the problem, the INI files were at
- fault. Edit the CONFIG.SYS, change the two modified
- lines in step 5 to the ORIGINAL file names (without the 1
- in the file name) and follow Method 4 below.
-
-
- METHOD 3 - REVERTING TO THE ORIGINAL DESKTOP
- This method copies your original desktop and initialization
- file and then generates new files from copies that are stored
- in the OS2\INSTALL sub-directory. This method does NOT save
- shadow copies of icons or extended services icons on your
- desktop. This starts the tutorial and generates the desktop
- as if you just finished the installation process. You loose
- customization and CONFIG.SYS is replaced with the original one.
- 1. If possible do a proper SHUTDOWN of OS2.
- 2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the system.
- 3. When you hear a single beep, or when you press Enter at the
- Boot Manager menu or password prompt(enter password); press
- and hold Alt+F1 keys. Hold these keys down until the
- keyboard buffer is full. The buffer is full when a rapid
- beeping sound is heard.
- 4. Release the keys after the buffer is filled.
- 5. The system goes past the OS2 Logos. A message says that 3
- files are renamed and re-created from copies in OS2\INSTALL
- sub-directory.
- 6. The system returns to the original desktop. This process
- can take up to 10 minutes. If the tutorial starts again,
- you may want to review it while desktop is being generated.
- 7. It is highly recommended to do an immediate SHUTDOWN after
- the system is installed to make sure that all programs and
- files have been associated correctly.
-
- METHOD 4 - RE-CREATING THE .INI FILES
- If the previous methods do not work, you can manually
- re-install without having to install with the diskettes.
- You do loose customization.
- X: drive where OS/2 resides
- 1. Go to a command prompt from diskettes.
- 2. Insert Diskette 2 and type:
-
- For FAT systems: CHKDSK X: /F and press Enter
- For HPFS systems: CHKDSK X: /F:2 and press Enter
-
- Run CHKDSK repeatedly, until there are no errors
- 3. Change to the drive containing OS/2. Go to the OS2
- sub-directory and type:
-
- X: and press Enter
- X:\OS2 and press Enter
-
- 4. At the command line type:
-
- ATTRIB OS2*.INI -R and press Enter
- DEL OS2.INI and press Enter
- DEL OS2SYS.INI and press Enter
-
- 5. At the command line type:
-
- MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC and press Enter
- MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter
-
- 6. At the command line use the ATTRIB command to delete the
- hidden file WP ROOT.SF in the OS2 startable partition. Type:
-
- ATTRIB C:\WP?ROOT.?SF -s -r -h and press Enter
- DEL C:\WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter
-
- 7. Change to the desktop sub-directory and remove all the
- subsequent sub-directories located beneath the desktop
- directory. OS/2 2.1 is named DESKTOP. Type:
-
- CD DESKTOP (For 2.1 FAT or HPFS systems)
- To remove sub-directories issue the RD subdir command.
- (subdir is name of sub-directory to be deleted)
- EX: RD DESKTOP
- NOTE: In FAT systems, blanks in folder names are represented
- by underscores (_), and in HPFS folder names with blanks
- must be enclosed in double quotes ("). If any of
- these directories do not exist, you may omit them.
- 8. Remove the diskette and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the
- system. This re-builds the desktop to your current desktop
- by replacing the corrupt .INI files with new .INI files
- created by MAKEINI.
- 9. It is highly recommended to do an immediate SHUTDOWN after
- system is installed to be sure all programs and files are
- associated correctly.
- NOTE: If your desktop is incomplete or did not recreate the
- desktop correctly, REPEAT steps 3 through 5 TWICE, remove
- the diskette, and restart the system.
- NOTE: If you are unable to delete the DESKTOP and/or subdir:
- A. Select WINOS/2 Group on DESKTOP.
- B. Select WINOS/2 Main.
- C. Select File Manager.
- D. Select the drive where OS/2 resides.

-
- X: (drive where OS/2 resides) and press Enter
- OS2\DLL\DISPLAY dir X: and press Enter
- CD\OS2\DLL\DISPLAY and press Enter
-
- 4. Copy the file, DISPLAY.DLL to the OS/2 subdir. Should be
- 76988 bytes in size. Type:
-
- COPY DISPLAY.DLL X:\OS2\DLL and press Enter
-
- 5. Change to OS2\INSTALL directory, Type:
-
- CD\OS2\INSTALL and press Enter
- COPY OS2.INI X:\OS2\OS2.INI and press Enter
- COPY OS2SYS.INI X:\OS2\OS2SYS.INI and press Enter
-
- 6. Use ATTRIB command for hidden file WP?ROOT.?SF, Type:
-
- ATTRIB X:\WP?ROOT.?SF -S -R -H and press Enter
- DEL X:\WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter
-
- 7. Remove the diskette, and press Ctrl+Alt+Del. This takes
- approximates 5 minutes. If system does not start properly
