Joe,
I'm having exactly the same problem as you. I installed the grolier
cd last night and can't get to the text behind the pictures/topics.
I did remove the registeration message however. After I called the
800 number and left my name/address/etc on their electronic registration
system, they tell you that you can turn off the message by selecting the
file menu, then preferences... There is a check-off box to turn it
off 8-).

Joe,
I found out the problem with the text not being displayed.
Change the WIN-OS2 settings in the Settings from 3.1 Standard
to 3.1 Enhanced Compatibility. The text should then appear.

You need to run a REXX program that creates and runs a temporary WPS
object representing the Windows program. This way you can specify
information such as WINOS2 settings. The following is an example to
start the WINOS2 clock:
/* Start seamless WINOS2 app (same session) from a REXX program */
call RxFuncAdd 'SysLoadFuncs', 'RexxUtil', 'SysLoadFuncs';
call SysLoadFuncs;
call SysCreateObject 'WPProgram', 'WINOS2 Clock', '<WP_NOWHERE>',,
'EXENAME=c:\os2\mdos\winos2\clock.exe;PROGTYPE=WINDOWEDWIN;'||,
'STARTUPDIR=c:\os2\mdos\winos2;'||,
'OPEN=DEFAULT','REPLACE';
There's a document somewhere that describes this in detail - hopefully
someone else can point to where it can be obtained from this board.

Intuit was the guest speaker at our last UserGroup meeting and had some
super UG prices. For $44,95 I got the Quicken for Win CD--it even
included the shipping in that price.
The CD is an install disk and one can't run the programs from it--9-meg+
later it was installed on the HD. Bummer.
They have their own file viewer and don't use the Win Help setup. The
font is mucked up. This must be a missing TT font or a misunderstanding
of the font. If the line doesn't quite fit the window, character overlap
and the text is either badly munged or totally unreadable.
Anybody got an idea for a solution?

Ken,
I experienced something similar with native WINDOWS and QUICKEN for Windows
release 2. I called Intuit about it and found out that I had a choice of
"small fonts" or "large fonts" for the Windows video driver that I was using.
I fixed my problem by choosing the "small fonts" driver...

implementation.)

Disclaimer: I have never used Word. I have experienced some GDI problems

utility that displays GDI memory that comes in Windows 3.1 Resources. That
would be my first suspect.

One more guess ... if your user is in a dual boot environment make sure
that the app is installed using WIN-OS/2 ... MS apps have a tendency to
"upgrade" windows files and add additional functions by putting stuff in
the windows subdirs during install if your user only installed under
DOS\Windows and didn't install under Win-OS/2 then this may also be
an area for problems to occur. Of course this does not apply if
the user has OS24W ...

Joe,
Thanks for the speedy response. I just tried what you suggested
(disabling system sounds) and it didn't help. As a matter of fact
it seems to have uncovered another problem - I CAN'T turn off system
sounds. I unchecked the box in the WIN-OS/2 Control Panel and it
seems to have no effect on the system sounds, they still occur! So,
I booted DOS, went into Windows and disabled them there. It worked
under DOS. After rebooting OS/2 and starting SEAMWIN (it's in my
Startup Folder) I discovered that the sounds are still there! What
do you think of that?!?
I attempted to post this several days ago, but apparently it never
made it! Since that time I have given up and removed the SB drivers
from WIN-OS/2 completely so I can run what I must. I'd still like to
be able to do everything, though!

**********************************************************************
Tom,
I don't have a PAS16, so feel _completely_ free to discard
this info! I do have a plain 'ol Soundblaster Pro & was
running into similar "situations" that you've seen. I did
get very good info from a IBM support person on another
cforum. There is a device driver in config.sys that prevents
sharing of the audio adapter in non-PM sessions. It is
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\AUDIOVDD.SYS <audio driver - this will be
??? for your PAS16>.
Anyway, removing this driver will avoid the serialization
of the adapter. NOTE that this is _not_ without potentially
serious side effects, including system crashes!!!!
I did experiment with this and have left it out for quite
some time now. I have had several "anomolies" such as losing
system sounds completely, but not frequently, and nothing
too ugly to put up with <g>.
Try if you wish, and <YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY!>

We need to integrate WP for Windows into our OS/2 PM application. How
would I start this Win 3.1 program from an OS/2 program? I looked at
DosStartSession (my guess) and I do not see session type for WINOS2.
Do I need to use SessionType SSF_TYPE_VDM? Has anyone ever done
this? Any and all advice appreciated.
Christopher "don't like it but gotta live with it" Frank, Fortis
**********************************************************************
Christopher:
DosStartSession is what will do this for you. The trick to launching
WIN-OS2 programs with this call is to load a second copy of CMD.EXE.
You can do this by setting the PgmName field of the STARTDATA structure
to "x:\\os2\\cmd.exe", where "x" is the drive that OS/2 is installed on.
Then you have to point the PgmInputs field of the STARTDATA structure to
a string that looks something like "/Cx:\wpwin\wpwin.exe", where "x" is
the drive where WP for Windows is installed and "\wpwin" is the path to
the .exe.
You can use DosStartSession to launch any kind of program if you first
set the STARTDATA PgmInputs field to null and the PgmName field to the
program you want to launch. Issue DosStartSession and, if it fails
(usually with rc=13 if it's beacause the program isn't the same video
type as the launch routine), then set the PgmInputs and PgmName fields
up as I described in the first paragraph, and reissue DosStartSession.
I have used this method to start OS/2, DOS and WIN-OS2 sessions.

We are having trouble getting this to work. I think perhaps the problem
is that WP4W must run in Enhanced Compatability mode. The reason I
think that is APAR PJ08789, which states that Windows 3.0 and 3.1
apps under OS/2 2.1 should be done using WinStartApp, not DosStartSession.
I have a problem with this, because the application development tool I
use generates 16-bit code and requires the MSC60C compiler, whose OS/2
header files do not support WinStartApp.
So, to restate my question more precisely, is it _possible_ to start
a Windows 3.1 Enhanced Compatability mode program with DosStartSession?
Thanks much!
Christopher Frank, GUIDE Desktop Computing Requirements
**********************************************************************
Christopher,
You may be able to use the DosStartSession API, passing the following
parameters...
StartData.SessionType=PROG_31_ENHSEAMLESSVDM
StartData.SessionType=PROG_31_ENH
StartData.SessionType=PROG_31_ENHSEAMLESSCOMMON

Thanks. Now, another question. Could I use WinStartApp to do the same
thing, or does the STARTed app also have to be a PM program.
What I want ideally is to start WP4W as a seamless app in some cases
and hidden (minimized) in others, passing it data either via DDE or
the WP API, save or print the document and then terminate the WP4W session.
Does this seem doable?
Thanks in advance.

We've installed MS Office 4.0 and have noted that on both Word 6.0 and Excel
the tutorials/examples/helps are broken. Word tells you stuff is not installed
but when you look, it's all there. Excel is a little more obnoxious (and
probably more truthful) telling you that "this program will not work on this
operating system". I sure hope that does not mean MS has once again gone and
programmed in stuff to break under WINOS2 (like DR DOS). If so, we are looking
at switching to Lotus Smartsuite. Has anyone else run into this problem. MS
answer is it is not supported. Not surprising.

The problem is not caused by a defect in Win-OS2. When the
Microsoft Word 6.0 setup program ( and Excel 5.0 ) detects and OS/2 system,
it does not install the computer based training (CBT) feature.
The CBT can be installed after word 6.0 is installed as follows :
1. Run the write applet in Win-OS2 Accessories.
2. Open \WINWORD\SETUP\SETUP.STF
3. Do not convert the file to WRITE format.
4. Do a find on the string; OnOS2
5. Select cancel on the find dialog box
6. Edit the line two lines below "OnOs2"
7. Change the word Yes to No
8. After the change the line should look similar to:
505 Depend 504? :506 507 us %\WINWORD\WORDC
9. Save the file
10. Run \WINWORD\SETUP\SETUP.exe using the Word Setup icon.
Do not run setup form the installation disk because it will
overwrite the change made to SETUP.STF
To TEST the CBT feature has been installed :
1. Run Microsoft Word 6.0
2. Select Help Quick Preview.
3. If the Quick Preview screen is displayed, the the CBT
feature was successfully installed.
I'm still working on how to make this work for EXCEL 5.0. This looks
like a futile attempt by microsoft to screw up OS/2 users.
Hope this helps.

From the .386 extension, it is a VxD (ring 0, 32-bit Windows virtual
device driver). OS/2 2.x does NOT currently support VxDs. Perhaps
if you run Win-OS/2 in Standard mode (Winos2 /s or select Standard
for the WIN_RUNMODE setting for a program object), your application
will load.
Some applications assume enhanced mode=VxD support. This sounds
like one of them. This is not true under OS/2. Windows Virtual Device
Drivers are NOT supported.

I've migrated a WINDOWS application over to 2.1 and have started getting
SYS3171 whenever I run the program. The application is a product called

I can't figure out how to shadow a Windows icon, like I can do for an
OS/2 icon. For example, to start Word Perfect for Windows I currently
have to click on the Program Manager icon, which then displays several
icons for Windows programs I have installed: Word Perfect, MATLAB, etc.
If I now click on, say, the Word Perfect Icon I get a window containing
several icons for Word Perfect: WP Editor, WP Speller, WP Thesaurus, etc.
I'd like to put a few of the most frequently used of these on my desk
top. I've tried shadowing them like I would for an OS/2 icon (press
ctrl-shft while dragging the icon to the desired location on the desktop)
but nothing happens. Is there a way to do what I want, and if so, how
do I do it????? Thanks.
Mark Fowler Loral Federal Systems - Owego
**********************************************************************
Mark,
You can achieve what you want by using the "Migrate Applications"
selection in the "System Setup" folder. To get to the the "System
Setup" folder, click the right mouse button on an open area of the
desktop. Then select "System Setup" from the menu. Once you are in
the "Migrate Applications" program just uncheck DOS and OS/2 program
check boxes and make sure only the drives you want searched for your
windows programs are highlighted. Then click on find, un-highlight
any you don't want migrated and click on MIGRATE.
This will install WPS objects for your windows programs in a WIN-OS/2
Groups folder on your desktop. From there you can shadow/move the
program objects inside the individual folders anywhere you please.

Hi Mark,
Another very easy way to create Program Objects (ICONS) of Window
programs is to do the following:
Open the directory tree of the drive that contains the Windows
program you are interested in. Double click on the directory that
has the program you are looking for. You will find that in the open
folder is the program you are looking for. Example: Word for Windows
would have an Icon with the name WORD.EXE . Open the programs pop-up
menu (right mouse button). Select Create Another, A window will
open. At the top of the window it will say PROGRAM, change this to
what ever you like it to say, spaces are OK. Example: Word for Windows
Next select where you want to place the object from the list.
Select Create and your done.
What you created is a Program Object not a shadow. You can now execute
the program from the desktop. You can create as many of these objects
as you like. A plus to this is that you can customize the each object.
This procedure can also be used for DOS and OS/2 programs.
PS: A shadow represent another object but the behavior of the object is
the same for both the shadow and the original. The Program Object
can have its own custom settings independent to that of the original.
The above steps may seem complicated but it really very simple.
Call me if you need more info.

Jerry, the method you are describing isn't creating a Program Object
but rather a Program Reference to the Program Object WORD.EXE. You can
change the name of the Program Reference to any name you want and it

Does the Win-OS2 enviroment manage memory in the same way as OS/2
2.1 does?
My customer has asked me that. He knows that OS/2 2.1 can use all
the phisycal (real) memory available in the workstation.
Does the same apply for WIN-OS2?? Or is there any kind of limitation?
I would really appreciate any help on this
Thanks in advance

WinOS2 is a DOS application and is loaded in a VDM. OS/2 UNLEASHED is a
good book for a general understanding of what all that entails. The
setting for the icon that loads your Win session can be configured to take
advantage of OS/2 memory management, but you still are running a "real"
version of Windows and some concession have to be made to it.
I don't know if this answers your question; but, hopefully, it does put
you on the right track for resolving specifics. If "Unleashed" doesn't
give you enough answers, you might want to browse the red book for nitty
gritty things that "Unleashed" skims across.

Win-OS/2 gets the memory it uses from OS/2 via DPMI services.
The default value permits Win-OS/2 to use up to 64MB of memory
if necessary (the maximum amount available is still limited by
actual physical memory+swap file space available).

I have a Windows for Workgroup network (WFW 3.11, specifically), and
I'd like to know if OS/2 for Windows is for me.
The questions I have should be common customer questions, but my
friendly retailer had no idea what the answers were.
I'm particularly interested to know the answers to a few networking
questions:
1. Can I upgrade one of the machines to OS/2 for Windows and still
communicate with my remote WFW machines?
2. With OS/2 for Windows, which of my WFW capabilities will no longer
be functional? How 'bout:
a) Automatic connection to remote disks?
b) Remote printing through Windows print functions?
c) The much higher performance of WFW 3.11 32-bit Disk, File access?
That's good enough for starters. Just want to know if I'm in the
ball park or whether I need to completely overhaul my networking
setup to use OS/2 for Windows.
Thanks,

Thanks for the crisp answer.
I'm not quite willing to give up yet. I'm willing to give up WFW and
go back to Win 3.1, and I'd need very little persuasion. Most
important question: if I buy 2 copies of OS2/Win for the two machines
I have networked together, can I use OS/2 networking support without
buying additional software?

To my knowledge OS/2 for Windows has not native networking support,
you will have to purchase additional software to network both
workstations (if LAN connected) you may want to wait for the OS Peer

I don't remember having this problem before I installed the present Genoa 8500
VL card (1Mb) using both their "blitter" drivers or the OS/2 2.1 and 2.11 inclu
ded drivers. Same problem in 2.1 and 2.11.
If I open a WINOS2 full screen session I can open a number of windows apps with
in it. They seem to function well. But, with that window open, I am unable to o
pen another seamless winos2 window. The wait icon appears and "stays". It will
change back to an arrow in about a minute, or immediately if I ALT-ESC, but the
second window does not open. It's object becomes cross hatched, but it does no
t show in the task list. It does show on a shutdown asking if you want to close
even though it never really opened. While in the WPS, the minimized initial ful
l screen window will not restore to full screen. If I open three or four seamle
ss winos2 sessions, I then have the same problem of not being able to open a fu
ll screen winos2 session. Same symptoms and results. It seems I should be able
to have a full screen winos2 session and a seamless session or two running at
the same time. It's not memory; I have 32Mb and at least 15 available when this
occurs. Possibly related is this problem. I have a few years of TTAX Pro1040 w
hich I used to run in windowed DOS sessions...I frequently want to see more tha
n one return at a time. These apps will not now open in a DOS window, giving an
error message about the system not supporting a windowed mode. But, if I start
it full screen, I can ALT-HOME to a window and it runs fine. Weird. Any though
ts or ideas on this appreciated. Or, is this a characteristic of the Genoa
8500 VL card? BTW, problems occur at any of the 3 resolutions vailable.

Shari, I will let you know if I get an answer. You should also monitor the svcp

**********************************************************************
Shari & Al,
I was noticing both your problems opening more
than one WiN-OS/2 session at a time. I just tried
it on my machine and had no problems, the two session
are in seperate sesion and also tried in the same
session. I know there is a problem of getting seamless
windows to run if the correct video drivers are not
installed. If you have the SP installed and use ATI
graphics cards make sure that you have the drivers for
the 2.1 GA loaded, there are known bugs in the SP drivers.
I just learned that ATI origanlly wrote there drivers
to take advantage of a bug in the OS/2 2.1 GA drivers.
Then when IBM fixed the old bug it made the ATI drivers
bad also.
My system is as follows:
486DX-33 Mhz
16 MB RAM
Trident 8900C Video Card
Sound Blaster Pro Multi CD with ASP
Bus Logic BT-542B SCSI Host Adapter
ID220 IDE Controller
Conner 200 mb IDE Drive
Fuj 180 mb SCSI drive
Logitech Hand Scanner Card
The reason I know about the seamless is several
customers had the sam prob and I ended up changing their
drivers back to the 2.1 GA drivers and they are up and
running fine.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for this information. I had been using an ATI Grapics Ultra (1Mb), but
it "broke" and is up in Canada for repair. I have temporary use of a Genoa
8500VL so that's what I'm using. Also have their latest drivers from the Genoa
BBS, but they are older than the CSD, so there may be a problem there. As to the
ATI drivers, I saw no performance increase using them, even with the GA, vs
the 8514A drivers, so was not using them anyway. In fact, the ATI OS/2 drivers
(V1.1 and 1.2) caused a sound distortion problem with my CD ROM which disap-
peared when I changed back to the 8514A.

I have a Windows program (Encore 3.0, by Passport) for music sequencing and
scoring. Under native Windows, it plays back to my MIDI synthesizers (both
external, one through a PC-MIDI card, one through COM2) with no problems.
Under Win-OS2, the timing is way off - it plays back at about half speed.
I can increase the tempo of the music, but the rhythm is still very jerky.
I'm hoping I can tweak some Win-OS2 settings to fix it.
The relevent settings (that I know of):
COM_DIRECT_ACCESS ON
COM_HOLD ON
HW_NOSOUND OFF (Because I run under Windows with a sound card)
HW_ROM_TO_RAM ON
HW_TIMER ON
IDLE_SECONDS 60
IDLE_SENSITIVITY 100
INT_DURING_IO ON
VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION OFF
Some of these may be unnecessary or even harmful, and I may be overlooking
some that would help. Anyone have any suggestions?
Are there any WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI settings that might make a difference?

This is for Julian Swales if he is still reading the forum.
Having just got into these forums recently, I started looking for any
ideas regarding a problem I have with the horrible product called MS
Project and noticed your dilema. I don't know if you have fixed it but
this is what we do to get around the problem.
From the LAN directory where WINPROJ resides, run setup.
Select only the graph and spell checker from the available otions and
install them on the required destination drive/directory (we put them
onto our local C drives for simplicity).
Exit the install and manually copy the WINPROJ.EXE and WINPROJ.DLG files
to the destination drive/directory.
Create the required desktop icon from templates specifying the .EXE
on the destination drive/directory.
This seems to work without any problems and with only the view.mpv,
winprog.exe, winproj.dlg and winproj.ini files on a separate drive
and directory from the LAN directory where MS Project normally resides
and also allows us to control the number of concurrent access to the
remaining files required by Project.
Hope this helps.....
Now my problem with this horrible product.
Without going into detail, has anyone found a stable configuration for
this product (and I'm meaning configuration in regards to the WIN-OS2
parameters) that allows WINPROJ to open multiple projects linked by DDE
and not crash or lock the system at least twice weekly.
I have a user who does this regardless of having project loaded locally
on her hard disk and its resulting in OS/2 getting a bad reputation, not
MS Project (a contractor says it works fine on his system but his system
is a stand-alone Pc, not a networked Pc which may have something to do
with it).

Occasionally, Project will refuse to save your project that you have been
modifying. Worse, it deletes the original copy of the project before
deciding that it cannot save the updated project. Another symptom that
also occurs is the inability to do a print preview. Printing works but
thats about it. It seems to be triggered by changing the view in the

There appears to be a minor difference with the title bar size when running
in 1024x768 XGA/2 video resolution under WINOS2 and native windows. The size
of the title bar under WIN OS/2 does not change size between VGA and XGA modes.
It should be smaller but it is stays the same. It does not matter if you are
running seamless or full screen, although you can see the size difference when
compared to an OS/2 window. The WINOS2 session title bar is several pixels
larger. Listed below is a partial set of the System.ini file parameters:
Display.Drv=XGA.DRV
SDisplay.DRV=SXGA.DRV
FONTS.FON=XGASYS.FON
FIXEDFON.FON=XGAFIX.FON
OEMFONTS.FON=XGAOEM.FON
Initial, the font type was suspect but it appears to be the same size as the
OS/2 font in XGA vs WIN OS/2 seamless.
What parameter in SYSTEM.INI controls the title bar size?

The Macro Recorder is a program that ships with Windows that is not included
in Win-OS/2. I am under the impression that it is written by a third party
(neither Microsoft nor IBM) and so did not come under the contract allowing
IBM to include Win-OS/2 in OS/2. I don't know if there is any legal way you
can get it, except by having a legal copy of Windows 3.1 to extract it from.

Not that I know of. Neither do I know a reason to want to try.
QEMM services are all available automatically via OS/2 services. And,

Quicken allows you to put the mouse pointer on the pie chart and click the
mouse button once to display the money value. It works fine under real
WINDOWS. It always display the value in a small rectangular box. But in
WIN-OS2, most of time you won't get the box, sometimes you see the box
flashing and disappear. So you have to click the button again an again
(don't click too fast, otherwise it will display another graph, QuickZoom)
Then you might get the value appear.

Some people have reported that they were able to install the driver in

was no reason known why one could get it to work when another could not.

This gets involved. Please bear with me.
I am unable to open a second WINOS2 separate session. I have
six windows apps set up as objects on my desktop. I also have
a WINOS2 full screen object (call it A) plus another which opens
a WINOS2 seamless windowed session (call it B). If I open either
A (which I assume is a separate session) or B, I can't open the
other or any of the six apps. I assume that if A or B is open,
any other win app would try to open another separate session.
If I open neither A nor B, I can open all six of the seamless
apps which I understand would all be running in the same WINOS2 session.
If I change any of the six apps to a separate session and open
it, I can't open any other. Is this "normal" or is something
wrong. It seems I should be able to have more than one WINOS2
session going at the same time. FWIW, I have the 2.1 GA and the
2.11 CSD in separate partitions (actually on different physical
drives) and the same situation exists in both of them. something
wrong. It seems I should be able to have more than one WINOS2
se
When I try to open the second session, the object becomes cross
hatched and the wait (clock) object appears and stays. It changes
back to an arrow pointer after 45-60 seconds or immediately
on an ALT-ESC. All OS/2 stuff works and the first WINOS2 session
is available, but not the second or any other. The second does
NOT show in the window list, but in a shutdown I'm ashed if
I want to close it. I say yes and get the shutdown. But on a
reboot, it opens, even though my config.sys has autostart set
to startupfolderonly.
I've used the included com.sys/vcom.sys as well as the sio replacements.
In both cases, I have the com ports disabled in all the apps
except the Seiko label printer which needs com1. This was done
to eliminate error messages about com1 being in use. I also have the audio adapter sharing set to none in all the apps.
When it was on optional, I got error messages about the audio
hardware not being loaded. I have com1 enabled and audio sharing
set to optional in A and B. Memory is not a problem...I have

The inability to open more than one WINOS2 separate session removes
a significant degree of protection against losing data which
is supposed to be there in OS/2. Would appreciate any help/guidance

I believe you have an interrupt confict with OS/2's printer which uses
IRQ5 so you should be experiencing printing problems from OS/2. My

have a SB Pro 2.0 card or older you'll be limited to IRQ2 or IRQ3 - use

We have a Window's application which our developers are trying to get
running under WINOS2. They have identified the following three compatibility
issues which they would like some feed back on.
- Running PC3270 for Windows under WIN/OS2
- File transferring from within a Windows Session: we are using the
DOS SEND and Receive commands
- Dynamically linking to network drives from within a Windows session:
We are using two Windows API to Connect and Release to a network
drive: WNetworkConnect & WNetworkRelease.
Thanks for any information anyone may be able to provide.
**********************************************************************
> - Running PC3270 for Windows under WIN/OS2
If you want PC3270 to talk 802.2, you need LAPS with the 802.2
virtual device drivers. It talking TCP/IP, you need TCP/IP for OS/2
with the DOS support kit (this has the the TCP/IP VDDs). If using a
3270 card, your DOS session needs to have exclusive access to the card.
>- File transferring from within a Windows Session: we are using the
> DOS SEND and Receive commands
Starting a DOS session from Win OS2 starts an MVDM, which will
probably not be able to communicate with your 3270 session under
Win-OS/2. I'm not sure how you can do this using the command line.
>- Dynamically linking to network drives from within a Windows session:
> We are using two Windows API to Connect and Release to a network
> drive: WNetworkConnect & WNetworkRelease.
It looks like you will need to make you WIN-OS/2 session Network
aware. This can be done using either LS 3.0 or Netware by
virtualizing the apis (LS 3.0) or running the shell (Netware)

which I do. I then get a message that says that it can not find
LANSVR.DRV. This machine is running LAN Requester 3.0 with service applied. There is not a

Terry,
Steps for Network Enabling WIN-OS/2 using OS/2 2.1
and LAN Server 3.0
1) Install OS/2 2.1 with WIN-OS/2.
2) Install the OS/2 requester portion of LAN Server 3.0.
Be sure to include the DOS LAN API VDD support. To
check whether the VDD is installed, check CONFIG.SYS
for the statement DEVICE=x:\IBMLAN\NETPROG\VNETAPI.SYS.
If it's not there, invoke LANINST, take the Advanced
Install path, and select to install DOS LAN API support.
Reboot after install.
3) Start a full screen WIN-OS/2 session.
Bring up the Program Manager.
4) Start WIN-OS/2 Setup (it's normally in
the WIN-OS/2 Main group).
5) Select the Change System Settings
command in the Options pull-down menu.
6) Select "IBM OS/2 LAN Server (Version 1.3
CSD 5015/5050)" from the list of
available networks, even though it seems
counterintuitive. Select OK.
7) A message box will pop up telling you there is a later
level of networking software available. Select OK.
8) A panel will pop up asking you to insert one of the OS/2
diskettes. Do so. You may get a "drive not ready"
popup first, if so, insert any diskette.
9) Four files will be installed: LANMAN.DRV,
NETAPI20.DLL, PMSPL.DLL, and
LANMAN.HLP -- in the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM directory.
10) A dialog box pops up asking you to restart WIN-OS/2.
Select CONTINUE.
11) Cancel out of Change System Settings. Close WIN-OS/2 Setup.
Close your WIN-OS/2 full screen session.
12) Start an OS/2 command window. Change to the
\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM directory.
Rename NETAPI20.DLL to NETAPI.DLL, and
PMSPL20.DLL to PMSPL.DLL.
13) Make sure the OS/2 LAN Requester is started and
you are logged on to the network. Start a WIN-OS/2
full screen session. You should now be fully
network enabled. For example, the File Manager's
Disk pulldown has a Network Connections menu
item allowing you to connect to remote files.

installing the drivers on this one particuliar machine all Windows
programs get a SYS0032 error. This error says that the file

selective install (I don't think reinstalling Win/OS2 was needed,
but just in case). While running in VGA mode the Win/OS2 session
works fine, but after reinstalling the SVGA drivers I got the same error again.

reinstalling the whole thing from scratch, and I don't see how
that will help.

You don't say - are all the machines Dell 466's? I ask specifically, because
I'm operating a Dell 450/L, and with the S3 16M drivers I had much the same
problem. I finally found a set of S3 32K drivers on America Online, and used
those. They seem to work on Dell machines better. There is a "disclaimer"
in the S3 drivers that ship on that separate diskette with OS24WIN, that, I
believe, specifically mentions the 466ME. If you were installing for hi-res
and lots of colors, those S3 drivers are not the choice; you'd be better off
staying with the standard VGA drivers.
There is apparently some strange hardware quirk (propietary VL-Bus?) that hoses
the S3 drivers that ship with the package.
Sorry that I can't give you more info - maybe a real IBM OS/2 guru can give
you more info.

We also had this problem and we have also discovered what was causing

We have also been encountering this problem where printed output from a
Window application gets split up into many small print jobs. Since the
printer control commands are often at the beginning of the print file,
the output is garbage. We are using LAN Server. Applications where this
has happened include WP for Win, Word for Win, Excel. So far, we have
not isolated the problem.

I am attempting to trial Thumbs Up from Cerious Software. It runs just
fine under real Windoze on my machine, but I an having trouble getting it
to run properly under Win-OS/2. Specifically, when I try to load a JPEG
file of more than a token size, I get
JPEG error:Insufficient memory(case 3)
I've cranked all the EMS, XMS and DPMI limits up to the max, but without
joy. Can anyone help with settings that will enable this thing to run?
Thanks.

Jon,
JPEG files should be functional under OS/2 2.1, however, they do require
extensive resources. How much RAM is installed in this system?

It's a PS/VP 6384 with 16Mb. I have no trouble running PMJPEG, or even
Image Commander for windoze, but can't get this one to work. As I said,
if I dual boot to real windoze, it works ok (albeit slowly).

Victor,
When using Norton Desktop, include the USEOS2SHIELD=0 statement in the
SYSTEM.INI file in the OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 directory on your startup drive.
Additionally, run the program in a WIN-OS/2 full-screen session.

You cannot run Windows native under OS/2 but you can share most of
the files. Windows use the PATH env variable. Fonts, apletts and some
DLLs may be shared with no problems. To share .INI files, you will
have to play some tricky games. Pay attention to the fact that the
kernels for OS/2 and DOS have different names, and OS/2 kernel
allows for renaming USER.EXE and GDI.EXE. (See CONFIG.SYS in WINOS2).
Hope you will enjoy it.

I'm supporting advertising personnel who have just upgraded their Quark
Xpress from version 3.12 to 3.3. They are running OS/2 2.1 on PS/2 9577s
with 32MB of ram and are connected to each other on a 16MB token ring
using IBM Lan Server. Quark is setup to run in full screen WinOS2 (XGA
2.11 display driver), enhanced mode, and a dpmi memory limit of 64MB.
Version 3.12 was stable on this platform. Version 3.3 works for awhile
but then reports "out of memory {-108}" and then "unable to access
network {-116}". Quark and WinOS2 must be closed at this point. Quark
is loaded locally and the data files are a mix - some local, some on a
lan drive - but all drives have plenty of space.
Quark tech support has not had reports of these symptoms and basically
washes their hands of WinOS2. Is there anyone out there running Xpress
3.3 on WinOS2, and, if so, what has your experience been, so far?

He has a home-grown Windows app that makes use of various fonts.
After installing OS24W, those fonts changed. And his selection
of fonts (within windows setup?) doesn't show his old fonts.
My understanding of OS24W is that it would leave the Windows
environment untouched. Has anybody seen this? Anything to try?

Subject: Changing WIN-OS2 from XGA to VGA
Ref: Append at 20:06:30 on 94/02/04 GMT (by AAAF0CY at OS2CUST)
Jim,
In the Jan/Feb issue of Personal Systems, in the "Little Solutions"
article, Tim Burleson of IBM's Personal Systems Competency Center
addresses this question of "Changing the Resolution in WIN-OS2
Full-Screen Session (SVGA and XGA)."
He does not address the problem of swapping out your monitor for one with
a different resolution, but I don't think that's what you're looking for,
is it?
This will not affect the resolution of seamless Win-OS2 sessions, just
full-screen. If you simply want to run a full-screen session at a
different resolution than your OS/2 desktop, this is how you do it:
XGA:
Edit your SYSTEM.INI. Near the bottom, you should see the following:
НXGA_Display┘
XGA_Resolution=2
Possible values: 1 for VGA (640x480), or 2 for XGA (1024x768). Change
the value to the resolution you want, save the file, and shut down and
restart a full-screen WIN-OS2 session. No need to reboot.
SVGA:
Note: OS/2 2.1 does not automatically install full SVGA support, so
you may need to run DSPINSTL first, from an OS/2 command prompt. I have
never had to do this, but I assume it would require a reboot.
Edit your SYSTEM.INI. At the bottom of the Нboot.description┘ section
you should find two lines describing the display.drv and sdisplay.drv
drivers. Tim lists the following possible values, although he states
that these may vary, depending on the chipset used in your video adapter
(his is a ValuePoint 433DX, which uses the TSENG chipset):
for 1024x768x256:
display.drv=1024x768x256 Large fonts 1M ET4000
sdisplay.drv=1024x768x256 Large fonts 1M ET4000
for 800x600x256:
display.drv=800x600x256 Large fonts 1M ET4000
sdisplay.drv=800x600x256 Large fonts 1M ET4000
for 640x480x256:
display.drv=640x480x256 Large fonts 1M ET4000
sdisplay.drv=640x480x256 Large fonts 1M ET4000
For other adapters, he suggests you contact the vendor to get the values.
Again, make the changes, save the file, and restart your Win-OS2 session.
* Piece o' cake!

These procedures, however, do not work for OS/2 for Windows, where one
SYSTEM.INI is shared both by Windoze and Win-OS/2. On a Diamond card,
it had no effect. Windoze is at 800x600x256, but strangely enough
Win-OS/2 remains at 640x480x16 and refuses to change this.
I am wondering what is the right procedure to change resolutions on
OS24W`s Win-OS/2..... :(

Follow the instructions in the section on recovering from errors on the
hard disk, in the OS/2 2.1 Installation Guide. You may also try deleting
the program object from the desktop and running the Migrate Applications
program, and remigrating the application. Additionally, try increasing
the amount of DPMI Memory assigned to the session, by increasing the
DPMI_MEMORY_LIMIT DOS setting, from the application settings notebook.

**********************************************************************
Is it true that if you run true windows programs from the WIN/OS2 full
screen, that the DPMI and other memory settings don't matter. This
is what I was told by Lotus Support. It dosen't make sense to me.
/
**********************************************************************
Win-OS/2 uses the DPMI_MEM_LIMIT value as a maximum amount of memory
available for the win-os/2 session (limited by the amount of virtual
memory -- physical ram + disk space on the swapper drive if less).
If Lotus meant that XMS/EMS values are not used in a Win-OS/2 session,
they are right about that, but DPMI memory IS NECESSARY. Win-OS/2 won't
run without it!

Bob Rottinger, Chicago Mercantile Exchnage

Bob,
There shouldn't be any problems running the applications themselves, as
long as the compatibility issues of WIN-OS/2 are met. For example, the
applications are not real mode programs, do not load specific Windows
Version 3.1 virtual device drivers (.386 or .VXD), etc.

Raymond;
There is a program called WINSEAM (or very similar) which you can put in your
startup file that sounds like it'll do what you want. There DOES appear to be
a minor glitch with it, however. If you use sound with OS2 (and with WIN)
your OS2 sound will probably wind up turned off.
If you can put up with that, WINSEAM will definitely speed you up.
You can download WINSEAM2 (I believe the file name is) from BBS's; I'm not sur
e where else you can get it.
Anybody else know where it can get extracted?
Hope this helps you...
