  16. ARC is used to create and maintain file archives.  An  archive is a group of
  17. files collected together into one file  in such a way that the individual
  18. files may be recovered  intact.  ARC automatically compresses the files being
  19. archived so that the resulting archive takes up a minimum  amount of space.
  20.  
  21. When ARC is used to add a file to an archive it analyzes the file to determine
  22. which of three storage methods will result in the greatest savings. These
  23. three methods are:
  24.  
  25. 1) No compression; the file is stored as is.
  26.  
  27. 2) Repeated-character compression; repeated sequences of the  same byte value
  28.    are collapsed into a three-byte code  sequence.
  29.  
  30. 3) Dynamic Lempel-Ziv compression;  the file is stored as a  series of
  31.    variable size bit codes which represent  character strings, and which are
  32.    created "on the fly".

  36.      PAK is intended as a replacement for ARC by System  Enhancement
  37. Associates and PKARC by Philip Katz.  While PAK is faster than ARC,
  38. speed is not the emphasis, and PAK does not attempt to  compete with
  39. PKARC in this respect.  However, PAK produces archive files  that are
  40. consistently 50% to 90% of the size produced by either ARC  or PKARC,
  41. and supports files created by either program.  Also, the  full screen
  42. version is much easier to use than ARC or PKARC.
