DOTLEAD
WordPerfect Version 5.0 has some curious aspects. For one thing,
there are features it is capable of handling, but which you are not
allowed to select from the keyboard. For another, there are features
which you can select from the keyboard only in ways that are sometimes
quite awkward. This small collection of files addresses some of these
curiosities related to tabs and the like.
(1) Like earlier versions of WordPerfect, Version 5.0 has a code for
flush right with a dot leader but, so far as I can determine, Version
5.0 follows the WPCorp tradition of not allowing the user to enter
that code from the keyboard. This is unfortunate, because a flush
right dot leader command can be quite useful in some kinds of text.
Fortunately, there is at least one way to get the code into a
document. The file DOTFLUSH.WP is a WordPerfect Version 5.0 document.
The text contains nothing but the WordPerfect code for flush right
with a dot leader.
(2) WP5 also does not seem to allow you to enter an indent with dot
leader code from the keyboard, and marking your tab settings with
periods to indicate dot leader does not seem to result in dot leaders
with your indents. DOTDENT.WP contains the appropriate code. Use it
the same way DOTFLUSH.WP is used. You do not need to dot your tab
settings to use it. I'm not sure dot leader indents are ever useful,
but who knows? Reveal codes indicates only the usual indent code.
"READ" - A PROGRAM TO CALCULATE FLESCH READABILITY SCORES
WHAT DOES THIS PROGRAM DO?
"READ" calculates readability scores for any text according to a widely
accepted formula, the Flesch readability score, which depends on word
and sentence length.
WHAT IS READABILITY MEASUREMENT?
If you give people a sample text to read, and then measure how well
they understood the material, they will understand some texts less than
others. This is readability.
DIFFERENT WORD PROCESSORS
READ 2.1 is specifically coded to work accurately on WordStar files,
ASCII files such as those produced by PC Write, and WordPerfect files.
By choosing selection 3 from the word processor selection menu, you can
also read other kinds of files, but results may not be accurate. Item
three is a simple filter that strips all control codes and all codes
over ascii 127. If you want to check a document written with a non-
ascii word processor, the safest procedure is to output the file as an
ASCII file and then test it. Item 3 may be useful for a quick check,
however.
PCOWP VERSION 2.0
PCOWP converts PC-Outline ("PCO") outlines to WordPerfect
("WP") Version 4.2 and Version 5.0 files, with appropriate WP
coding, including coding of PCO heading identifications as WP
paragraph numbering. Because it works mainly with "structured
files," it also converts the outlines produced by any other
outlining program capable of writing the outline as a structured
file, although minor differences in the structured file format
used by different programs could cause trouble. In particular,
PCOWP can handle structured files produced by Grandview.
