2 ∙ Getting Started Golden CommPass
Introduction to Golden CommPass
Golden CommPass is a complete OS/2 communications program for automating
access to the CompuServe Information Service. It has been designed to
fully exploit the multi-tasking capabilities of OS/2 and bring new worlds
of electronic information and a sense of the growing global community to
every OS/2 user with a modem and a desire to explore these new
possibilities.
Golden CommPass allows you to optimize your time and efficiency in
accessing several of the services provided on the CompuServe Information
Service. Specifically, Golden CommPass will make the time that you spend
using CompuServe mail and the special interest forums significantly easier
and cost efficient.
The primary design objective of Golden CommPass is to substantially reduce
the cost of accessing CompuServe mail and CompuServe forums, while
completely automating the tedious task of searching for and retrieving
information.
This objective is accomplished by first downloading messages and subjects
from CompuServe forums, and then, at one's convenience, selecting those
subjects (message threads) which are of interest. Again, Golden CommPass
will automatically carry out your request to retrieve that information.
While this online session is in progress, there is no need to sit and stare
at the messages scrolling by at high speeds. Instead, you can be
comfortably reading messages and composing responses on other forums, at
your leisure. You will no longer worry about your monthly connect-time
bills or your long distance telephone bills, because you can take your time
composing messages offline.
Of course, at any time while composing a message, you can save what you
have already written (using either OS/2's clipboard, or by saving the
message to a temporary file). You can control what you do and when you do
it. When the online session has completed, you can read those messages as
well. There is no limit to the possibilities.
In addition to automating access to the forum message area and data
libraries, Golden CommPass provides complete support for all the CompuServe
mail facilities, including binary file transfer, MCI mail, worldwide
facsimile transmissions, Internet, Telex and postal. Additional facilities
are provided to enhance the capabilities of CompuServe mail, such as
attaching data files to a message and using mailing groups or lists.
This manual is organized into two major sections. The first several
chapters describe the installation and use of Golden CommPass. This
section is for the new Golden CommPass user who is not familiar with other
CompuServe navigation programs. We suggest that you start by reading this
section to assist in the installation and set-up of Golden CommPass. It is
very important that CompuServe and Golden CommPass be properly configured
in order to work together correctly.
Golden CommPass Getting Started ∙ 3
The second section is designed to be used as a reference. Every menu,
option, dialog box and error message is described in this section. If you
are looking for the specifics of using a particular Golden CommPass
function, you should look in this section of the manual.
How to Get Help
If you have any problems, we are interested in hearing from you so that we
can correct the situation in a future release of Golden CommPass. In
addition, we're always open to suggestions and other feedback about Golden
CommPass. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss any problems or
suggestions.
Reporting Problems
When reporting problems, it is important to gather some background
information so that you can be helped quickly. If possible, please use the
problem report form in the back of this manual.
General Information
Please be sure to include the following information in your problem report:
1. Version of Golden CommPass experiencing problem.
2. Version of OS/2 you are using.
3. Type of modem in use.
CompuServe Connection Problems
If you are having problems connecting to CompuServe, please provide the
following additional information.
1. Modem initialization string
2. Modem reset string
3. Type of network being used to access CompuServe
4. Name of logon script being used
5. A copy of the ONLINE.LOG demonstrating the problem.
OS/2 Access Violation Errors
If you are experiencing access violation errors (reported as TRAP D errors
under OS/2 1.x, or as SYS3175 errors under OS/2 2.x), please capture the
CS, EIP (IP register for OS/2 1.x) and CSLIM register values. These are
necessary to specifically locate the problem area. Please provide a
general description of the actions that led up to this failure.
Where to Go For Support
Support is available on CompuServe, via telephone, or via facsimile.
However, our preferred method of supporting our customers is electronically
via CompuServe, using the IBM OS/2 Information Exchange. If at all
possible, we would like you to ask your support questions and submit your
problem reports using the IBM OS/2 Information Exchange.
4 ∙ Getting Started Golden CommPass
When reporting problems on the IBM OS/2 Information Exchange on CompuServe,
please make every attempt to place your questions in the correct section.
Golden CommPass questions, as well as questions about accessing CompuServe,
or about configuring your modem, should be placed in the OS/2 Applications
section.
CompuServe Support
Technical Support for Golden CommPass is provided on the IBM OS/2
Information Exchange on CompuServe. The IBM OS/2 Information Exchange
consists of two areas, or forums.
∙ OS/2 User Forum
∙ OS/2 Developers Forum
Support for Golden CommPass is provided in section 9, OS/2 Applications, on
the OS/2 User Forum (GO IBMOS2).
Questions about accessing CompuServe, about the IBM OS/2 forums, or about
any other software products that are also supported on CompuServe should be
placed in the most appropriate section on the correct forum.
If you are not sure where to place a message, you can address it to "sysop"
on the appropriate forum, and the sysop will move the message to the
appropriate section.
OS/2 User Forum (IBMOS2)
The OS/2 User Forum (GO IBMOS2) is a public forum for OS/2 users, vendors
and programmers to congregate and discuss problems, their solutions, and
anything else associated with OS/2. The following message sections have
been created on the OS/2 User Forum:
1. Public Image - discussion about the public perception of IBM and
of OS/2. This includes OS/2 marketing issues, IBM HelpWare and
issues about the IBM OS/2 Information exchange.
2. General 1.x Q&A - discussion and questions about OS/2 version 1.x.
This section is oriented towards user and configuration questions
for OS/2 1.x.
3. Installation - discussion about installing OS/2. This includes
installation of both OS/2 1.x and 2.x. If you have questions
about configuring your system, partitioning your hard disk, or

system performance.
∙ Golden CommPass requires a minimum of 1.5 megabytes of hard disk
space.
∙ Once you begin to use Golden CommPass, you will want to have several
additional megabytes of disk space available for storing messages or
data library catalogs.
Software
Either:
∙ OS/2 1.2 or 1.3
If you're using IBM OS/2 1.2, you must be at the November refresh
level, and will also need printer CSD 1201 to be able to print
messages properly.
If you are using OS/2 1.3, we recommend that you install CSD XR05050
for SE or WR05050 for EE.
∙ OS/2 2.0 or higher.
Compatibility
∙ Golden CommPass provides compatibility with the file formats and
script commands in TAPCIS(tm) 5.4.
∙ Golden CommPass is also compatible with many of the popular
TAPCIS(tm) add-on products. It has been tested with RECON, Tappet,
Taporder and Catscan.
8 ∙ Getting Started Golden CommPass
Accessing CompuServe Information Service
Golden CommPass is a complete OS/2 communications program that has been
designed to provide the maximum flexibility and cost efficiency to the OS/2
CompuServe user.
Golden CommPass allows you to process multiple message files, message
header files, or library catalogs concurrently, and work with the different
forum files in the order you prefer. All of the message indexing or
sorting operations take full advantage of the capabilities of OS/2, and are
processed using background threads.
The Golden CommPass communications engine exploits the capabilities of OS/2
by running in the background, which allows you to continue processing other
forums, or to use another application.
If you are already familiar with one of the DOS CompuServe navigation
programs, please read the following sections and you should be able to
start running Golden CommPass in a very short amount of time.
If you are a new Golden CommPass user and are not familiar with other
CompuServe navigation programs, please skip to the section titled
Installing Golden CommPass on page 15.
Upgrading from TAPCIS
Since you are familiar with TAPCIS, the installation of, and migration to,
Golden CommPass is actually quite easy. Just follow these simple steps:
1. Extract the execution files to a directory on the hard disk drive.
2. Check configuration options.
3. Set up online configuration options.
4. Install Golden CommPass on the OS/2 Desktop.
Golden CommPass is distributed as three self-extracting compressed files.
Before you can begin to use Golden CommPass, you must decompress the
following distribution files:
GCPMSG.EXE
GCPCOM.EXE
GCPDOC.EXE
Once you have executed these programs, and extracted the compressed files,
be sure that the files listed below are on your hard disk:
1. COMMPASS.EXE
2. COMMPASS.DLL
3. COMMPCOM.DLL
4. COMMPCIS.DLL
5. COMMPASS.INI
6. COMMPASS.HLP
7. COMMPCOM.HLP
Golden CommPass Getting Started ∙ 9
If the LIBPATH statement in your CONFIG.SYS file does not contain a .\ at
the beginning of the line, as illustrated below, you will need to:
1. move the 3 DLL files listed above to a directory already in the
LIBPATH
2. add your Golden CommPass directory to the LIBPATH statement and
restart OS/2
3. add the .\ to the LIBPATH statement and restart OS/2.
Sample CONFIG.SYS
LIBPATH=.\;C:\OS2\DLL; ...
That's it! You can start Golden CommPass by changing to the directory
where you installed Golden CommPass and typing COMMPASS at an OS/2 prompt.
For more information on starting Golden CommPass, read the section Starting
Golden CommPass on page 18.
There are several other configuration options that you may want to check,
so that you can continue operating in your current manner. These settings
can be found in the Edit Parameters dialog box, which is described in
detail on page 56. You may also want to review the settings in the
Defaults dialog box, which is described on page 64.
If you are accustomed to maintaining a log of the online session, you'll
need to set the menu options in Golden CommPass. Take a look at the Online
Log description on page 68.
If you are accessing CompuServe from an external network, or have other
special configuration requirements for connecting to CompuServe, you should
review the Golden CommPass online options. More information on these
options is described in the Online Defaults dialog box, on page 65.
Although you are now able to start Golden CommPass, you may want to install
the Golden CommPass program on the OS/2 desktop. The procedure for
Installing Golden CommPass on the OS/2 Desktop is defined on page 16.
Upgrading from CompuServe Information Manager
There is no easy way to directly migrate your CIM configuration to Golden
CommPass at this time. However, you will find some similarities, and a lot
of differences, between the two programs. The major difference is that
Golden CommPass will allow you to perform 99% of your CompuServe activities
offline.
To properly configure Golden CommPass, you will need to follow the
instructions in the next several sections.
We suggest that you start by reading the Installing Golden CommPass section
beginning on page 15. Be sure to pay special attention to Configuring
CompuServe Forums (Favorite Places) on page 20.
10 ∙ Getting Started Golden CommPass
New Golden CommPass Users
There are several steps required to configure Golden CommPass to work
properly with the CompuServe Information Service. The procedure has been
automated, but there are still several steps that you must carefully

14 ∙ Installation Golden CommPass
2. Installation
Installing the Golden CommPass Program
Golden CommPass is distributed on 3.5" low density (720K) or 5.25" high
density (1.2M) diskettes. A description of the distribution files can be
found in Appendix D on page 106.
Golden CommPass should be installed in a separate subdirectory on one of
your logical disk drives. In this manual, we will assume that Golden
CommPass will be installed in the directory C:\COMMPASS. All of our
examples will refer to this subdirectory even though you may have elected
to install Golden CommPass in a different directory.
Decompressing Distribution Files
The first step to install Golden CommPass is to create a new directory
for the Golden CommPass distribution files. This can be done from any
OS/2 command prompt by entering:
MD C:\COMMPASS
Switch to this new directory by entering the change directory command, as
illustrated below:
C:
CD \COMMPASS
The files are stored on the distribution diskette in a compressed format.
Therefore, you will need to decompress these files at this time. This
can be accomplished by entering the following commands:
A:\GCPMSG
A:\GCPCOM
The first command will decompress the files required to run the Golden
CommPass message reader. The second command will decompress the files
required to run the Golden CommPass communications engine.
If you are interested in installing the online documentation (an
electronic copy of this manual), you can decompress the file by issuing
the following command:
A:\GCPDOC
Installing Dynamic Link Libraries
Once you have decompressed the files described above, it is necessary to
update your system so that OS/2 can locate the required Dynamic Link
Library (DLL) files.
There are three DLLs required to run Golden CommPass. They are:
COMMPASS.DLL
COMMPCOM.DLL
COMMPCIS.DLL
Golden CommPass Installation ∙ 15
All three DLL files must be placed in a directory pointed to by the
LIBPATH statement in your CONFIG.SYS. If the LIBPATH statement in
CONFIG.SYS does not already include a ".;" at the beginning of the line,
then you want to add it to the beginning of the LIBPATH statement. This
will force OS/2 to search the current directory for the DLL first. For
example:
LIBPATH=.;C:\OS2\DLL;...
Alternatively, you could move the Golden CommPass DLL files to a
directory already included in the LIBPATH statement, or update the
CONFIG.SYS file to include the Golden CommPass directory. If you update
the LIBPATH statement in CONFIG.SYS, it is necessary to restart OS/2
before you are able to use Golden CommPass.
Installing Golden CommPass on the OS/2 Desktop
OS/2 Version 1.3 - Desktop Manager
From the OS/2 desktop manager, select the group where you'd like to
install Golden CommPass. If you are using a mouse, double-click on the
group name; if not, press the ENTER key after you have selected the

menu option by pressing both the ALT and the P key together (hereafter
identified as ALT+P).
When the Program menu is displayed, select the New option by pressing the
N key. The New Program dialog box will be presented. You must complete
the entries in this dialog box as follows:
Program Title: Golden CommPass
Path and file name: Enter the drive letter, followed by the path name,
and finally the program name where you have installed Golden CommPass.
For example, you could enter C:\COMMPASS\COMMPASS.EXE.
Parameters: The Golden CommPass command parameters are described in
detail in Appendix C on page 104.

After completing the entries for this dialog box, click the ADD button
with the mouse, or press the ENTER key. An example of a completed New
Program dialog box is illustrated below.
The OPTIONS pushbutton will bring up an additional dialog box where you
can choose to automatically start Golden CommPass whenever the system is
started. In addition, this dialog box will allow you to request that
Golden CommPass be started up minimized or maximized. These options
should not be used since Golden CommPass will remember its state whenever
you shut it down. The next time you start Golden CommPass, it will be
restored to this state.
16 ∙ Installation Golden CommPass
OS/2 Version 2.0 - Workplace Shell
In order to install Golden CommPass on the OS/2 Version 2.0 Workplace
Shell (WPS) desktop, you will need to create a new program object. This
can be done easily by opening the templates folder and, with the right
mouse button, selecting the template for a new program.
Pressing and holding the right mouse button, drag the program template to
the folder where you want to install Golden CommPass, or to the Workplace
Shell desktop itself.
When you have the program template positioned where you want to install
Golden CommPass, release the right mouse button. The following Program
Settings dialog will be displayed.
You will need to complete the following entries on the Program Settings
dialog.
Path and file name: Enter the drive letter, followed by the path name,
and finally the program name where you have installed Golden CommPass.
For example, you could enter E:\Golden CommPass\CommPass.exe (not
completely illustrated above).
Parameters: The Golden CommPass command parameters are described in
detail in Appendix C on page 104.
Working directory: Enter the drive letter, followed by the path name
where you installed Golden CommPass. For example, E:\Golden CommPass.
After completing the entries for this dialog box, select the Windows tab
setting by clicking on the tab with the left mouse button. This will
cause the following dialog box to be displayed.
When the window above is displayed, you will need to make a selection for
the minimized window behavior. It has been our experience that the
minimize window to desktop setting works best, but any of the other
settings will also work with Golden CommPass.
Finally, select the General tab. This will display the dialog
illustrated below. Be sure to complete the title field as illustrated
below. If you wish, you can change the icon associated with the Golden
CommPass program.
Once you have completed the steps outlined above, you can save the Golden
CommPass settings by pressing ALT+F4, or by double-clicking on the system
menu in the upper left corner of the dialog box.

and a count of the number of times you have started Golden CommPass.
You can use the OS/2 control panel or system folder to set the options
which are used to determine if the logo window is displayed, and for what
length of time.
A sample Golden CommPass logo window is illustrated below.
When you first install Golden CommPass, or if you start Golden CommPass
and it cannot find a valid parameters file (PARAMS.CIS), you will be
prompted to enter some information to initialize the parameter file. The
following dialog box will be presented.
This dialog box will prompt you for the minimum amount of information
required to properly configure Golden CommPass for accessing CompuServe.
____________________
1 Golden CommPass is compliant with the CUA guidelines for providing
context sensitive help throughout the entire application. At any time,
you can get help by pressing the F1 key.
18 ∙ Installation Golden CommPass
The dialog box can be completed by entering your first and last names,
your CompuServe userid, your CompuServe password (your password will not
be displayed). When you've completed entering information for this
dialog box, click the OK button with the mouse, or press the ENTER key.
Control will be returned to the main Golden CommPass window.
Configuring Golden CommPass
You may need to configure several additional parameters before you can
begin using Golden CommPass. This can be done from the Options menu on
the main window.
Select the Options menu by pointing to that item with the mouse and
pressing the left mouse button. When the Options menu is displayed,
select the Parameters option. You can also start the Edit Parameters
dialog by pressing the CTRL+P keys simultaneously.
Configuring Parameters
The following dialog box will be displayed when you select the
Options/Parameters menu item.
You can use this dialog box to select alternate parameter files for
Golden CommPass, configure the modem, configure the directory paths for
downloading messages or files, and several other options as well. These
options are described in more detail on page 56, Edit Parameters. You
can also get more information at any time while running Golden CommPass
by pressing the f1 key or by selecting the help pushbutton.
The modem initialization string may need to be changed to properly
initialize your modem. Several default values are provided, but quite
often they are not sufficient. If you have any specific questions about
configuring your modem, or setting the parameters for your modem, please
refer to Appendix A in this manual. If you still need help, contact
Creative Systems Programming Corporation for additional assistance. (See
How to Get Help on page 4.).
You may also want to update the message and download path specifications.
If you do, be sure to enter a fully qualified path name.
Configuring Access Telephone Numbers
You will need to configure your telephone options. This can be done by
selecting the PHONES pushbutton (ALT+P) from the parameters dialog box,
or simply by pressing the CTRL+T keys from the main window. You can also
select Options/Telephones from the main menu.
When Golden CommPass initializes the PARAMS.CIS file for the first time,
it sets all of the telephone numbers to dial directory assistance (555-
1212). This is certainly not the number that you want to dial.
Therefore, you must change the telephone number to the appropriate local
CompuServe access number.
Golden CommPass Installation ∙ 19
If you are not sure what your local CompuServe access number is, you can
find that number in one of several different ways. First, the CompuServe
starter kit that is included with Golden CommPass contains a list of
CompuServe access telephone numbers. If you cannot locate a convenient
telephone number in that list, you can call CompuServe's customer service
telephone number at (800) 848-8990 or (614) 457-8650 outside of the
United States and Canada. This will connect you to an automated voice
system which will ask you to supply the telephone number that you are
calling from, as well as the line speed that you intend to use to access
CompuServe. After checking their database of access numbers, you will be
given an access telephone number.
Type the correct CompuServe access number into the field identified Phone
#. Make sure you select the correct line speed and that the network
service is properly selected (especially if you are not using a
CompuServe network access number). Lastly, make sure that the SELECT
pushbutton has been pressed for the current telephone number.
Illustrated below is an example of the Edit Telephone Number dialog box.
More complete information on the Edit Telephone Number dialog box can be
found on page 62.
When you have completed the Edit Telephone Number dialog box, select the
OK pushbutton with the mouse, or press the ENTER key (when the OK
pushbutton is highlighted) to return to the main Golden CommPass window.
Configuring CompuServe Forums
The next task is to define to Golden CommPass the forums that you plan to
visit. When the PARAMS.CIS file is initialized, it will automatically
add and select the MAIL forum for you. However, you will need to add any
other forums (such as IBMOS2 or OS2DEV) that you plan to access. If you
don't want to define those forums now, you can always come back and
configure them later.
What is a CompuServe Forum?
There are almost 300 different CompuServe forums covering a very wide
range of interests; from PCs to hardware and software vendors to games to
travel. You name it, there's probably a forum that covers that topic.
One major resource that is available through the forums is access to
technical support for almost every major hardware and software product
currently on the market. This support includes OS/2, Netware, Borland
languages and software products, and of course, Golden CommPass.
Each forum is identified by a quick reference word, or GO word. The
quick reference word serves as the way to get to a forum if you are
online interactively, and it also serves as the name of the forum. What
this means is that all messages, uploads and other files on your PC
associated with a particular forum will use the forum name as the first
part of the file name on your PC. These files will be placed into the
path identified on the Edit Parameters dialog, which is described in more
detail on page 56.
Each forum consists of three major areas; the message base, the data
library and the conference rooms. Golden CommPass completely automates
accessing the message base and the data library.
20 ∙ Installation Golden CommPass
The conference rooms provide an interactive, online2 discussion area,
where exchanges can take place with other users. You may want to use
Golden CommPass to provide assistance in using the conference areas, but
any communications program can be used.
There can be up to eighteen different sections within each forum's
message base, data library and conference rooms. Note that not all
sections are available on all forums.
The different sections contain messages, files or discussions that fall
under the general category described by the section name. Generally, it
is the forum sysops' responsibility to insure that messages or files are
located in the most appropriate section.
Message Base
The message base is the most dynamic and the most popular area of any
forum. A forum has a limited number of slots for messages, and when a
new message is entered into the message base the oldest message is
deleted. Typically, a message base will have 1000 slots, but some forums
have more and some have less.
Forums typically have a scroll rate of several days to several weeks.
The scroll rate is defined as the number of days that a message will
remain visible on the message base before it scrolls off. The actual
length of the scroll rate will depend on the dynamics of the forum and
the forum members.
Messages are stored in the message base in thread order. Thread order
means that messages are stored (and retrieved) in a logical tree
structure. As several people reply to a single message, the tree begins
to branch out. The relationships of the messages in the tree are
described as parent, child, grand-child relationships.
While the current version of Golden CommPass will not reorganize your
message file to sort the messages into thread order, it does provide
complete navigation of the message thread tree independent of the order
that messages are actually stored on your hard disk.
Data Libraries
The data libraries in the different forums are filled with a variety of
great programs, utilities, interesting forum discussions and a wealth of
other useful information.
There can be up to eighteen different data libraries on each forum. This
can make the task of finding exactly what you are looking for somewhat
complex. Golden CommPass can make this task a bit easier for you by
searching all of the data libraries for a specific file.
You can also instruct Golden CommPass to search the data libraries for a
specific keyword, or for files that have been uploaded within a specified
number of days.
____________________
2 Generally speaking, conferences can be very expensive because you are
charged for the entire time that you are connected. Since only one
person can "talk" at a time, and it can take a very long time to type a
single response, online conferences can be very costly.
Golden CommPass Installation ∙ 21
Conference Rooms
There can be up to eighteen different conference rooms within a forum.
These rooms can be used for online, interactive discussions. Generally
speaking, this is not the most efficient means to communicate your
thoughts and ideas. The amount of information that can be transmitted is
quite limited, and will only be seen by those members who are in the same
conference room at that particular time.
Setting Forum Options
To display the Edit Forum Options dialog box, select the FORUMS
pushbutton (ALT+F) from the Edit Parameters dialog box, or simply press
the CTRL+F keys from the main window. This dialog box contains a great
deal of information, and may appear confusing and intimidating. Once you
understand how to configure the forums, it should become self-
explanatory. As always, you can press the F1 key, and Golden CommPass
will display additional help information.
Adding forums
On the left side of the dialog box is a list of the currently defined
forum names. If you need to add forums, you simply press the ADD
pushbutton.3 This will display the Add New Forum dialog box. Simply
enter the name of the new forum that you are adding, and select the OK
pushbutton.
Setting the Service (gateway)
You may also need to set the service for this forum. The service is
critically important to the operation of Golden CommPass. It is this
service, or gateway definition, which the Golden CommPass communications
engine will use as part of the navigation command to properly reach the
forum on CompuServe.
Setting the forum mode
You can access each forum in one of three different modes. They are:
∙ Scan message headers (subjects)
∙ Read new messages
∙ Read messages waiting for you.
Scan message headers
This is the most commonly used option. When you use scan message
headers, Golden CommPass will retrieve the new message subjects (headers)
for the sections you have selected. After retrieving these message
subjects, you will need to select those subjects where you are interested
in reading the full text of the messages. Then, during the next online
session, Golden CommPass will retrieve the full text of those messages.
____________________
3 The ADD pushbutton will be disabled (greyed out) if you have already
defined the maximum of 20 forums. If this is the case, you will need
to create another parameters file. For assistance on creating a new
parameters file, see Cloning Parameters File on page 61.
22 ∙ Installation Golden CommPass
Read new messages
This option is useful if you want to read all new messages in the
selected sections on the forum.
Read messages waiting for you
This option will retrieve all previously unread messages addressed to
your userid on the forum.
Selecting Sections
Initially, the list of sections on the forum will be empty. You can
manually define the section names, but it's easier to have Golden
CommPass join the forum and update the list of forum section names for
you. This can be easily accomplished by checking the Update section list
option below the list of forum sections. Please see Setting CompuServe
Forum Parameters on page 25 for more information.
Once you have joined the forum, you will need to select those sections
that you are interested in monitoring. Alternatively, you can select all
of the sections on the forum by checking the All sections forum flag.
All sections is the default when you add a new forum.
Forum flags/status
Lastly, there are several forum flags that you may need to set. Some of
these flags are described below. They are described more completely
under the Edit Forums dialog box on page 53.
Forum selected
The most commonly used flag is the forum selection state. A forum must
be selected to be processed during one of the online operations. You can
toggle the forum selection state by clicking on the Forum Selected check
box or by double clicking on the forum name in the list box on the left
side of the dialog box.
All sections
This flag is used to override any individual section selections you may
have made. It will select all the currently defined public sections.
An example of the Edit Forum Options dialog box is illustrated below.
Configuring Golden CommPass/CompuServe
Once you have finished defining to Golden CommPass all the forums you
intend to use, it's time to start the Golden CommPass communications
engine to complete the configuration procedure. The steps necessary to
complete this procedure are:
1. Set CompuServe System Configuration.
2. Set CompuServe Forum options.
Golden CommPass Installation ∙ 23
Both steps have been completely automated, and are explained in detail
below.
Setting CompuServe System Configuration
CompuServe maintains default configuration information on every userid
for every speed at which that userid accesses CompuServe. Several
options need to be properly specified in order for Golden CommPass to
function properly. Failure to complete this step could lead to serious
problems trying to use Golden CommPass.
To configure the CompuServe system defaults, you will need to select the
Connect/Configure CIS Params once for every speed that you intend to use
to access CompuServe. This procedure has been completely automated, and
there is no need for you to watch the online session. However, if this
procedure fails to complete, then the following CompuServe options must
be set properly for Golden CommPass to function. Issue the GO DEFAULT
command at any CompuServe prompt to set the options listed below.

Setting CompuServe Forum Parameters
After you have successfully set your CompuServe system configuration, as
described above, there is one more step that you must complete.
Before you can access any of the CompuServe forums, you must configure
each forum for use with Golden CommPass. This procedure has also been
automated, and should be run before you attempt to process a forum using
one of the standard Connect menu options. There are two ways to
configure your forum options.
The first method can be selected at any time, and this is done by
selecting the Update forum sections option on the Edit Forums dialog box.
This is described in detail on page 53. This option will be handled by
Golden CommPass the next time you access that forum.
The second method is to select the Connect/Join forums option. This
option will join (or update if you are already a member) every forum in
your current selection list. No additional forum actions will be carried
out when you select this option.

28 ∙ Message Reader Golden CommPass
3. Running the Message Reader
Now that you have successfully configured Golden CommPass and CompuServe,
it's time to start actually using the Golden CommPass program. Make sure
that you have added and selected the forums that you want to access (see
Edit Forum Options on page 53) for this session.1
After you have selected the forums to process, select the Retrieve new
messages option from the Connect menu. Golden CommPass will display the
Start Communications dialog box as illustrated below.
This dialog box indicates which forums you will access during the current
online session. It provides several options for reconfiguring the online
session and gives you an opportunity to close any files the Golden
CommPass message reader is using which the communications engine may
need.
If you need to make any changes to the selected forums, select the CANCEL
pushbutton or press the ESC key. Go back to the Edit Forum Options
dialog box, make the changes and then select the Retrieve new messages
option from the Connect menu once again.
When you are ready to continue with your online session, press the OK
pushbutton (or press the ENTER key). Golden CommPass will take care of
the rest. You can watch what is scrolling by in the communications
window, but you should not feel a need to watch it. In fact, we
recommend that you minimize or hide the communications window while the
background communications is in progress.
When control is returned to the Golden CommPass message reader, you will
notice that several objects have been created, and placed along the
bottom of the main Golden CommPass window2. These objects indicate the
results of your online session. The different objects that may be
created are described below.
Child Window Objects
The objects that Golden CommPass creates fall into two different
categories: offline actions and online actions. Both represent pending
activities, either for the message reader or for the communications
engine.
You can control the number of icons displayed by Golden CommPass by
changing the settings on the Options/Display Icons menu. See Display
Icons on page 63 for more information.

Golden CommPass Message Reader ∙ 29
Offline Objects
Offline objects represent activities that you must perform, such as
marking message subject headers or reading and replying to messages. An
object will be created for each forum that has offline activities
pending.
Closed book
A closed book represents a forum where you have downloaded messages that
you have not read. Once you have read the messages from this forum, the
book will no longer be displayed.
Indexed book
The indexed book represents a forum where you have looked at the forum
index but have not opened the forum to read messages.
Open book
The open book represents a forum where you are currently reading messages
(the message window has been created for this forum).
Typewriter
The typewriter represents a forum where you are currently replying to an
existing message or composing a new message.
Clipboard
The clipboard represents a forum where you have downloaded message
headers (subjects) that you must mark so that the communications engine
can download the entire message thread.
Card file
The card file represents a forum data library catalog. You can browse
through the catalog, or you can search for keywords and select files to
be downloaded.
Online Objects
Online objects represent activities you have requested the communications
engine to perform for you. For example, if you composed any responses to
messages, an envelope icon will be created for that forum.
Envelope
The envelope is a general purpose icon that is used to represent a
variety of online actions. Primarily, it is used to indicate outgoing
messages which must be uploaded to a particular forum.
Checked envelope
The checked envelope is created as a result of marking headers. It
contains requests to have the communications engine read specific message
threads.
30 ∙ Message Reader Golden CommPass
Upload diskette
The diskette with an arrow pointing up indicates a forum data library
upload request. This process is fully automated. The upload process is
described in the Upload File section on page 45.
Download diskette
The diskette with an arrow pointing down indicates a forum data library
download request. This could be a request to download specific file(s)
from the data library or a request to download catalog information about
the data library for later review offline.
Reading Messages
Before you can begin to read messages from one of the forums, you will
need to select those message subjects which you are interested in
reading. These actions are indicated by clipboard objects. You can open
the message object by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button,
or by selecting the name on the forum Window menu list.
Message Subject Index Window
Once you have opened the message subject index window, you will need to
select the message subjects that you are interested in reading. The
message subjects will be organized by forum section. You can select an
entire section, or you can select individual message subjects. The
number in parentheses indicates the number of messages in the message
thread.
After you have marked the message subjects that you are interested in
downloading, you will need to connect to CompuServe again to retrieve the
text of those messages.
This is easily accomplished by selecting the Handle Online Actions option
from the Connect menu. Again, Golden CommPass will open the
communications window, connect to CompuServe, and carry out your requests
without any additional effort from you. You are free to perform any
other task while this process is running.
As Golden CommPass completes processing each forum, the communications
engine will notify the message reader, and the messages will be available
for you to read. This action is indicated by the creation of a book
object in the main window.
Message Index Window
When you open the book object, the message index window will be
displayed. This window contains a visual representation of the messages
in your message file. The messages are displayed in the actual order
that they exist in your message file. They are organized by session,
section and subject.
Golden CommPass Message Reader ∙ 31
At the beginning of the session, section or subject entries you will see
a small plus (+) sign or a minus (-) sign. These allow you to expand or
collapse the index entries below the current entry. For more complete
information on expanding and collapsing the message index window entries,
please see the View section on page 49.
Once you have chosen which message you would like to read, you should
select that entry by pressing the enter key or double-clicking the left
mouse button. This will open the message window.
Message Window
The message window is where you will probably spend the majority of your
time while using Golden CommPass. This window uses a standard OS/2
Multi-line Entry (MLE) field to display the contents of the forum
message. Once you have opened the message window, you can easily
navigate to other messages in the same forum, or jump to the next forum
to continue reading messages there.
Golden CommPass provides you with the capability to print messages,
search the message file for specific text, cut or copy portions of the
message to the system clipboard or save the message in archive files.
Complete navigation of the message thread tree is also provided, with
extensive capabilities to jump to a specific message, either by relative
message number or by the forum message number, to skip the remainder of
the message thread or to locate the next or previous message.
The message window is completely user configurable. Options are provided
for selecting the font and colors to use to display the message. An
optional button bar is also available for commonly used commands.
Generally speaking, most users prefer to read the messages in the order
they were retrieved from the CompuServe forum. To make this as easy as
possible, Golden CommPass provides a scroll option that will scroll the
message to the next page, or to the next message if the entire message
has already been displayed.
Replying to Messages
When you find a message that you want to reply to, Golden CommPass splits
the message window horizontally and allows you to compose your message in
the lower portion of the message window, while continuing to display the
original message in the upper portion of the window. This makes it very
easy to respond to all of the discussion items in the message you are
answering.
After you complete your reply, Golden CommPass provides several options
for delivering the message, including posting the message privately or
sending it via CompuServe mail. Golden CommPass can also save a copy of
your outgoing message for your own records.

34 ∙ Communications Engine Golden CommPass
4. Running the Communications Engine
Most time spent using Golden CommPass will be spent using the offline
message reader. The message reader sends commands to the communications
engine identifying specific tasks to be performed during the next online
session.
Types of Online Sessions
A typical Golden CommPass session (time you choose to read and reply to
messages) will consist of multiple online sessions. This is because Golden
CommPass stays online for the absolute minimum amount of time required to
get the job done, and signs off. All time consuming activities (such as
reading and replying to messages) are done offline, between online
sessions.
There are several different types of online sessions provided by Golden
CommPass. The most frequently used online session types are:
∙ Retrieve New Messages/Subject Headers
∙ Handle Online Actions
∙ Read Waiting Messages
Retrieve New Messages/Subject Headers
When you begin an online session to retrieve new messages, Golden CommPass
will select one of several different activities to perform depending on the
mode setting for that forum.
For a forum marked scan message headers, Golden CommPass will retrieve all
new message subjects and place them into a clipboard object for you to
later identify which subjects you are interested in downloading for the
full message text.
For a forum marked read new, Golden CommPass will retrieve all new messages
on the forum.
For a forum marked read waiting, Golden CommPass will only retrieve those
messages specifically addressed to your userid that you have not already
read.
Generally speaking, this is the first type of online session you should
select when you begin a new series of Golden CommPass sessions.
Handle Online Actions
This is the best option to select when you have online actions pending
(i.e., mail or messages to be uploaded, files to be uploaded or downloaded,
marked messages to be downloaded, etc.), but don't want to download any new
information from CompuServe. It will only carry out those pending online
actions, and will not retrieve any new messages or message subjects for
you.
Handle Online Actions is the option to select after you have marked the
message subjects you want to download, or after you have read messages and
you want to upload the replies.
Golden CommPass Communications Engine ∙ 35
Read Waiting Messages
This option will check every forum that is in your current selection set
and will retrieve any messages addressed to your userid.
No other new messages or message subjects will be retrieved. No pending
online activities will be processed.
Setting Online Default Options
There are many options available to customize Golden CommPass to your
specific access needs and requirements. Some options may need to be
changed if you are accessing CompuServe through a foreign network, or have
other special access requirements.
These options are more completely described in the Online Defaults dialog
box on page 65. If you have any questions about properly setting any of
these options, please do not hesitate to contact our Technical Support
department.
B+ File Transfer Protocol
CompuServe has developed their own file transfer protocols, Quick B and B+.
These protocols have been fully implemented in Golden CommPass. The
protocols provide sophisticated error detection, and the ability to restart
interrupted file transfers.
Golden CommPass has fully automated both the upload and the download file
transfer options. Complete the appropriate entries on the Upload file
dialog box, or on the Search library dialog box and Golden CommPass will do
the rest.
During the file transfer, normal screen updates will be suspended and
Golden CommPass will display a B+ file transfer window. This window
contains complete information on the status and efficiency of the file
transfer request. It is described in detail on page 94.
The B+ file transfer protocol supports several choices for the transfer
blocksize. The bigger the blocksize, the faster the transfer will take
place. However, if errors are detected with a large blocksize, it will
take longer to recover from that error, and that may lead to a degradation
in the overall file transfer speed. Golden CommPass uses a default value
of 512 byte blocks. We have found that this blocksize works best under
OS/2 on most hardware configurations. However, with faster processors, and
clean telephone lines, you may be able to achieve higher data transfer
rates with a larger blocksize.
Using Golden CommPass with Other Networks
Golden CommPass has been designed to be configurable with other networks.
Logon scripts are supplied to support the most common networks, including
CSC network in Europe, DataPac and Fujitsu Australian/New Zealand network.
In addition, logon scripts are included to access CompuServe through the
LATA network, Sprint (Telenet) and Tymnet.
36 ∙ Communications Engine Golden CommPass
Many users have also successfully configured Golden CommPass to use local
modem pools and other unique configurations. If you have any questions
about setting up Golden CommPass to work with your specific network
requirements, please contact our Technical Support department.
About the Communications Window
When you start a CompuServe communications session by selecting one of the
Connect options from the main Golden CommPass window, a secondary window
will be created which will display the Online session.
The Golden CommPass default is to initially display this window as an
object on the OS/2 desktop1, but the default can be changed on the
Options/Defaults dialog, which is described on page 64.
When this window is displayed as an icon, the icon title will be updated to
indicate the progress of the communications engine.
The communications window has the following components:
Window Title
Status Line
Communications Session
Communications Window Title
The Golden CommPass communications window title will be updated at regular
intervals to indicate the actual status of the communications engine. As
different forums are processed, messages or files are downloaded or
uploaded, the title will be updated to reflect the current status.
This allows you to minimize the communications window on the OS/2 desktop,
and still have status information on the progress of the online session.
Communications Status Line
At the top of the communications window (under the title and menu bars) is
a status line. This line contains information about the status of the
communications session. This information includes indicators for:
Carrier detected
Terminal mode
Scroll back buffer
Session log
Capture file
____________________
1 Remember to select the minimize window to desktop option, described on
page 17.
Golden CommPass Communications Engine ∙ 37
As the modes of these indicators change, the color of the displayed text
will also change. For example, the Carrier detected indicator (CD) will be
displayed in red if carrier has not been detected, but will display in
green once it has been detected. The same is true of the other online
session indicators.
In addition to the status indicators, there are several other fields on the
status line that provide the following information.
Time of day
Length of session
Session throughput (characters per second)
Automatic Communications Engine
Most of the time, the Golden CommPass communications engine will be running
in a fully automated mode. During these automatic sessions, there is no
need for user intervention, and in fact, it is not possible to enter any
information through the keyboard when an automated session is in progress.
In order to be able to use the keyboard, the communications engine must be
in the interactive or terminal mode.
Interactive/Terminal Mode
The interactive, terminal mode allows the user to send characters from the
keyboard to CompuServe. During the normal automatic communications mode,
this is not desirable since any keystroke could disrupt the automatic
scripts. However, it is occasionally necessary to break through the
automatic scripts to recover from an unexpected problem. To enable the
interactive terminal mode while Golden CommPass is in automatic mode, you
should select the Options/Terminal mode command from the communications
window. This option can also be selected by pressing ctrl+t.
When the Golden CommPass communications window is in the interactive,
terminal mode, this is indicated in the status line by displaying the word
Term in green. When the automatic communications mode is in effect, the
word Term will be displayed using the color red.
There are several additional options available when Golden CommPass is in
the interactive terminal mode. These are:
Conference mode
File capture
Macro support
Scroll back buffer
User scripts
38 ∙ Communications Engine Golden CommPass
Conference Mode
Although the popularity of online, interactive conferences is decreasing,
Golden CommPass does make it easy for you to participate in an interactive
conference.
In a normal conference, there is a great tendency for people to "talk on
top of each other". What this means is that messages from multiple users
could be jumbled together, or even worse, displayed on the screen while you
are in the middle of composing a conference message of your own.
To eliminate this problem, Golden CommPass provides a separate Conference
Mode dialog box where you can completely type your message, without being
disrupted by the messages from other conference participants. When you are
ready to send your message, a single pushbutton empties the conference
dialog and transmits the entire message to CompuServe.
File Capture
Sometimes it is desirable to capture certain portions of an online session
to a separate file. The file capture options provide the capability to
open, close or pause a capture file. When you open a capture file, you
have a choice of overwriting the file or appending to the end of the file.
Macro Support
Golden CommPass provides up to 20 user configurable online macros. Each
macro is assigned a letter (from A to T). The use of online macros can
greatly simplify the often difficult chores of manually navigating the
CompuServe Information Service.
Scroll Back Buffer
Golden CommPass provides access to a 64K scroll back buffer. At any time
while the communications window is active, you can view the scroll back
buffer by pressing the pgup key, or by using the vertical scroll bar on the
window. You must press the esc key to end the display of the scroll back
buffer.
User Scripts
A user script language is also provided. This script language is typically
used to create a logon script to help sign on to CompuServe, but it can
also be used to help automate other areas of CompuServe where complete
automation is not provided by Golden CommPass. The user script language is
described in Appendix B on page 102.

5. Menu and Dialog Reference
There are two different types of child windows that Golden CommPass uses
during normal operation. They are Multiple Document Interchange (MDI)
windows and secondary windows. The MDI windows are used to display the index
of message threads, to mark subject headers and to display the index of the
data library catalog. The MDI windows are owned by the main window, and
are always fully contained within the boundaries of the main window.
The secondary windows are used to display the actual text of the message
files or data library catalog entries. A secondary window is owned by the
OS/2 desktop (workplace shell) and can be moved and positioned outside of
the main Golden CommPass window. On a display with high resolution, such
as an XGA or a Super VGA, it is possible to display both the main window
and the secondary window at the same time.
Examples of both types of windows and additional information on the usage
of these windows can be found later in this section on page 70 and page 72,
respectively.
Main Window
File
The items contained on this menu will allow you to specify or manipulate an
object, such as a forum message file, or to create a message to be uploaded
to another user or public forum.
You can also save the parameter file currently in use.
Open
The Open menu selection will display the Open dialog box1 as illustrated
below. You can use this dialog to select a specific file containing
messages that you have previously downloaded from CompuServe.
Certain files in the files list box will be displayed in different colors.
All files that are in your current selection set will be displayed in a
highlighted color. In addition, files that are currently being used by the
online communications engine are displayed in a disabled (grey) color.
In addition to opening message files, you can also open:
∙ Subjects (message headers)
∙ Saved files (viewed)
∙ Data library catalogs
Other objects which can be displayed in the list of files cannot be
processed with this option. The only files that can be processed with the
Open command are message files and data library catalog files. Any other
files that you try to open will not be processed properly.
____________________
1 This dialog box varies slightly from the standard CUA Open dialog box by
including the file type combination box, which can be used to quickly
select files that Golden CommPass uses.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 43
The two major components of this dialog box are the files list box and the
directories list box. The files list box contains all files matching the
pattern specified in the file name entry field. The directories list box
contains all sub-directories of the current directory (identified
immediately below the file name entry field), as well as the other disk
drives accessible. The parent directory is represented by two periods
(..).
At the top of the dialog box is an entry field which can be used to specify
a fully qualified file name, or can be used to specify a pattern to be used
in selecting files to be displayed in the files list box.
The currently selected drive and directory are displayed immediately below
the file name entry field.
The file type selection combination box can be used as a quick selector to
specify the default file name patterns for several of the more commonly
accessed file types.
The Open dialog box currently supports the following file types:
Advanced commands (*.ADV)
All files (*)
Catalogs (*.CAT)
Download files (*.DOW)
Headers (*.MRK)
Log files (*.LOG)
Messages (*.MSG)
Quick-Scan Headers (*.QSN)
Script files (*.SCR)
Send files (*.SND)
Upload files (*.UPL)
View saved messages (*.SAV)
Note: A slight variation of this dialog box is also used for several other
functions, including:
∙ Delete a file
∙ Edit a file
∙ Execute an online script
View Catalog
The View catalog menu selection will display the Open dialog box. You can
use this dialog to select a specific data library catalog containing file
descriptions that were previously downloaded from CompuServe.
Close/Close all
Close the currently selected child window. If no child window is currently
selected, then this option will be disabled on the File menu.
In addition, this same menu item can be used to close all of the children
windows. In order to close all windows, press the SHIFT key when you
select the File menu. The Close option will be displayed as Close all.
44 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Write Message
The Write Message menu item can be used to compose a new message for any
forum or on CompuServe mail.2 When writing a message using CompuServe
mail, several additional options are also available, including the ability
to send an ASCII or binary file, send an Internet message, or use one of
the other gateways provided by CompuServe.
The Write message dialog box allows you to fully address a message, either
for a forum, or for CompuServe mail. Once you have completely addressed
the message, Golden CommPass will create a special type of message window
that will be used to compose the actual message. Most of the menu options
for the message window will still work as expected when used from this
option.
This option is more completely described in the Write section on page 80.
Upload file
Using Golden CommPass, you can automate the process of uploading files to
CompuServe.
The Upload dialog box is illustrated below.
You must select the forum where you want to upload the file, as well as the
library name or number within that forum. These selections are made using
the list boxes at the top of the dialog box.
Below the forums list box is a field to enter the file name that should be
used in the CompuServe data library. Remember that a CompuServe file name
is limited to a six character file name and a three character extension.
Normal PC/DOS files use an eight character file name and a three character
extension. If you are using an OS/2 HPFS partition on your hard disk, you
can use much longer file names, as well as include many special characters
in the file name.
To the right of the file name is a check box which is used to indicate
whether the CompuServe file should be replaced if it already exists. If
this box is checked and the file does not already exist, it will not have
any effect on the file upload process.
On the next line is a place for you to specify the fully qualified file
name of the file to be uploaded on your system. This file must already
exist in order to be able to schedule the upload request.
To the right of the PC file name is a combination box which is used to
select the type of file that you are uploading. Generally, the file is
identified as either ASCII or binary. However, any supported CompuServe
file type is also supported by Golden CommPass.
There is also a field for specifying keywords that you want to have
associated with this file. These keywords will all be converted to upper
case, and any special characters will be ignored. When a user is doing a
keyword search for a file, these are the keywords that he will be
searching.
____________________
2 The forum must already exist in the forums section of the current
parameters file.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 45
Below the keywords field is a space to enter the title of the file. This
should be a short description of the file that you are uploading.
Lastly, there is an entry area where you can give a detailed description of
the file you are uploading. The maximum number of characters that you can
enter is listed above this field. When you have reached that maximum, you
will not be able to type any additional characters.
While processing this dialog box, the OK and UPLOAD pushbuttons are not
valid selections until all the required fields have been properly
completed. At that time you can select the UPLOAD pushbutton to queue the
current selection to be uploaded and remain in the Upload File dialog box.
You can also select the OK pushbutton to queue the current selection to be
uploaded and dismiss the dialog box.
Search Data Library
You can use the Search Data Libraries dialog box to search an online data
library for files to be downloaded to your system.
You can also have the system build a catalog of files (stored as
FORUMNAME.CAT) available for downloading that you can later search, and
select files from that catalog to be downloaded.
An example of the Search Data Library dialog box is illustrated below.
If you are searching for a specific file name, check the appropriate box
and enter that file name. You can check the Download if found box if you
wish to also download that file.
In addition, you must select the forum and the data libraries that you want
to search. You can specify as many data libraries as you want.
Appropriate search commands will be built for each library specified.
If you do not want to search for a specific file, then you can search for a
specific keyword. You can also specify an age (in days) to further limit
the search. Again, you must specify the forum that you want to search, as
well as the specific data libraries that you want to search.
The OK and DOWNLOAD pushbuttons are not valid selections (i.e., they will
be disabled) until the required fields have been properly completed. At
that time you can select DOWNLOAD to queue the current selection for
download and remain in the Search Data Library dialog box or select the OK
pushbutton to queue the current selection to be downloaded and dismiss the
dialog box.
Save Parameters
Selecting this option will save any changes which have been made to the
current parameters file. If no changes have been made to the current
parameters file, this option will be disabled.
Note: You can request Golden CommPass to provide a confirmation dialog box
before saving the current parameters file. This is described in the
Defaults dialog box on page 64.
46 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Delete
Delete any file on the hard drive. If there is an object (icon)
representing this file, it will also be removed from the Golden CommPass
window.
Note: You can request Golden CommPass to provide a confirmation dialog box
before deleting a file. This is described in the Defaults dialog box on
page 64.
Exit
Selecting the exit option will terminate the Golden CommPass session. This
may take several seconds to complete if there are many open children
windows.
Note: You can request Golden CommPass to provide a confirmation dialog box
before exiting the program. This is described in the Defaults dialog box
on page 64.
Edit
The Edit menu provides several options, including editing a user specified
file, entering advanced user commands for any forum in the current
parameter file, or editing your personal address book.
Edit Files
The standard Golden CommPass Open dialog box will be displayed to allow you
to select a single file to be edited. The Open dialog box is described in
detail on page 43.
You can also configure the editor to be invoked from the Defaults menu
selection. For more information on changing the editor, see the Defaults
dialog box on page 64.
User command
The Advanced user commands dialog box allows you to request a special one-
time command to be executed by the communications engine. These commands
will be executed during the next online session.
These predefined user commands include:
1. Read CIS-marked messages. Read any new messages addressed to you
on the selected forum. This is similar to the Connect/Read
waiting command.
2. Read all messages on the forum that are addressed to ALL.
3. Read all messages on the forum addressed to your userid.
4. Read all messages on the forum sent by your userid.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 47
5. Delete private messages. All private messages to or from you will
be deleted if they have already been read. Generally speaking, it
is considered to be good online manners to delete private messages
after you have read them. Golden CommPass will ask you if you
want to delete a private message addressed to you when you reply
to that message. If you forget to delete the message at that
time, this command will delete it, and any other private messages
for you.
Note: Do not delete public messages of interest to others. This
command will not affect public messages.
6. Read forum announcements. Selecting this option will display
another dialog box which will allow you to read any of the forum
announcements.
In addition to the pre-defined user commands, you can enter any other
command in the area below the list of forums. Each command that you enter
here will be stored in the FORUMNAME.ADV file. This file will be processed
by the communications engine when the forum is first selected. Each
command should be entered on a separate line.
Sample commands that you might want to enter here include:
Command Description
OPT;NAM;Your-Name;P To reset your forum name
REA FRO:JOE STA:0 Read all messages from Joe
REA TO:GUY STA:0 Read all messages to Guy
REA NEW SUB:CommPass Read all new messages about Golden CommPass
REA THR NUM:12345 Read the thread beginning with message
number 12345.
REA NUM:12345 Read message number 12345.
Note: You can enter any CompuServe command that is valid at the Forum!
prompt.
You can also make these commands permanent advanced commands. These
commands will be stored in the FORUMNAME.ADP file and will be executed at
the beginning of every online session.
Warning: Extreme care should be taken when creating a permanent advanced
command since it will be executed every time that forum is entered during
an online session.
Address book
Select this option to invoke the standard Golden CommPass editor to edit
the USERID.CIS address book file. To add entries to the address book, see
the Update Address Book option on page 79.
Note: You can configure the editor to be invoked from the Defaults menu
selection. For more information, see the Defaults dialog box on page 64.
48 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
View
The entries in the message index window are organized in a hierarchical
fashion. The highest level are the online session header entries. A
session header is created every time you access the forum during an online
communications session. The session header contains information from
CompuServe, including the last time you accessed the forum, the highest
message number on the forum and the last message that you have read on the
forum.
Below the session header entries, Golden CommPass will display a section
header entry in the message index whenever the message section changes.
This allows you to group together all of the messages in a single section
of the forum.
Below the section headers are entries for each message subject in that
section. This is the standard forum presentation mode, displaying the
message index to the subject level. An example of the message index window
can be found on page (?).
The items on the View menu allow you to expand or collapse the entries in
the message index window. You can also select the index level that you
want displayed when the message index is created.
Note: If fewer entries are placed in the message index window, the quicker
the message indexing process will proceed. In other words, the sessions
setting will take significantly less time than the subjects setting.
Expand Branch
The Expand Branch option will add more entries to the message index window
by expanding the message thread entries to reveal the lower level sections,
subjects or messages in the message thread.
You can also expand the message thread branch by pressing the plus (+) key,
or by clicking on the plus icon in the message index window with the left
mouse button.
Collapse Branch
The Collapse Branch option will remove entries from the message index
window by collapsing the message thread entries, hiding the lower level
sections, subjects or messages in the message thread.
You can also collapse the message thread branch by pressing the minus (-)
key, or by clicking on the minus icon in the message index window with the
left mouse button.
Indexing Levels
The next three menu settings allow you to control the default indexing
level for the message index. The less indexing that Golden CommPass
performs, the less time it will take to complete the indexing process.
You can control the message indexing to the following levels:
∙ Sessions
∙ Sections
∙ Subjects
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 49
Sessions
Selecting the Sessions indexing level will provide the best indexing
performance. This option will only display the session entries that Golden
CommPass creates whenever you enter a forum.
Sections
Selecting the Sections option will provide reasonable performance when
indexing the message files. This option will display the session and
section entries.
Subjects
Selecting the Subjects option will display all message index entries except
for the actual messages.
Connect
Using the Connect options, you can start the Golden CommPass OS/2
communications engine in the background to transmit and receive data files
from the CompuServe Information Service.
When you select one of the Connect options, the communications window will
be opened so that you can monitor the online session. For maximum
performance, we recommend that you run the communications window in a
minimized or hidden state. The communications window is described in
detail beginning on page 88.
Retrieve New Messages
Selecting the Retrieve New Messages menu option will open the
communications window and start the communications engine in the
background.
All forums in your current selection set will be processed.
Each forum will be visited during the automated communications session, and
any new messages (on a Read new forum) or new message subjects (on a Quick
Scan forum) will be captured to your hard disk for later processing using
Golden CommPass.
If you have any new messages to be uploaded, or file/data library requests
pending for the selected forums, those requests will also be processed
during this session.
Handle Online Actions
Selecting the Handle Online Actions menu option will invoke the
communications engine in the background. All forums currently selected
with pending Online actions (represented in Golden CommPass by envelopes or
diskettes) will be processed. After processing has been successfully
completed, the icons will be removed from the main window.
50 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Read Waiting Messages
Selecting the Read Waiting Messages menu option will invoke the
communications engine in the background. All forums in the current
selection list will be visited. Any forums with pending online actions
(represented in Golden CommPass by envelopes or diskettes) will be
processed. In addition, all forums will be checked to see if there are any
unread messages addressed to you. If there are messages addressed to you,
they will be downloaded and added to your message file for that forum.
Note: The Golden CommPass communications engine will visit every forum in
your current selection list. CompuServe bills in one minute increments,
and it will charge a minimum of one minute to go to the next forum.
Online Actions and Read Waiting
Selecting the Online Actions and Read Waiting menu option will invoke the
communications engine in the background.
This option is very similar to the read waiting messages option described
above, but it will not visit every forum in your current selection list to
check for unread messages addressed to you. Instead, it will only read
messages addressed to you on the forums where you have other online actions
(i.e., outgoing mail) pending.
Interactive Mode
When you select the Interactive Mode option, the Golden CommPass
communications engine will be started in the foreground. After the
communications engine has connected with CompuServe and signed on using
your userid, you will be left at the CompuServe top menu. You will not be
automatically signed off CompuServe, and you will continue to incur
CompuServe connection charges until you issue the OFF command.
Join New Forums/Update Existing Forums
This option will cause the program to visit every forum in your current
selection list and properly configure the forum options for use with Golden
CommPass. If you have not previously visited the forum, then Golden
CommPass will automatically join the forum and enter your name into the
forum membership list.
Selecting this option will also update the list of forum messages sections
and data libraries that is stored on your system.
Generally speaking, you should not need to use this option, except when you
are initially configuring Golden CommPass for use with CompuServe. The
equivalent function is also provided on the Options/Forums dialog box
(described on page 55).
Use Logon Script
This option allows you to execute a customized logon script when you sign
onto CompuServe.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 51
After establishing a connection with CompuServe and signing on with your
userid, the LOGON.SCR script file will be executed. This could be used for
any specialized functions, including the retrieval of local weather
information or specific stock prices. After completing the commands in the
logon script, this option will continue normal CompuServe processing as if
the Retrieve New Messages option had been selected.
Configure CompuServe Parameters
When you select this option, Golden CommPass will execute the special
CompuServe configuration script (CONFIG.SCR) supplied with Golden CommPass.
The CONFIG.SCR file must be in the same directory as the Golden CommPass
main program, COMMPASS.EXE.
This option will change your CompuServe default options to be compatible
with Golden CommPass. If you have already configured your CompuServe
defaults for use with another automation program, then you should compare
your current CompuServe default options with the configuration required by
Golden CommPass. The Golden CommPass defaults are listed on page 24.
Note: This option only needs to be selected once for every line speed for
each userid that you use to access CompuServe.
Start Communications Dialog Box
The Start Communications dialog box is displayed whenever you select one of
the Connect menu options (except Connect/Interactive or Connect/Configure
CIS params).
On this dialog box you have the options to alter the online processing
order before the communications engine is started in the background, or to
return to the main Golden CommPass menu by pushing the CANCEL pushbutton or
pressing the ESC key.
The following options are available in this dialog:
∙ Select all forums with online actions
∙ Close all forum files currently selected
∙ Reorder forums
If the Select all forums box is checked, all forums in the current
parameters file with pending online actions will be included in your online
session. If this box is not checked, only those forums in the current
selection list will be processed during the online session. Any forums
that would be added to the selection list (because there are online actions
pending for that forum) will not be processed.
If the Close all forum files box is checked, all forum files which are
still open to Golden CommPass will be closed before the communications
engine is started. This option should be checked. All forum files must be
closed (and locked) so that they can be processed by the communications
engine. If you do not check this option, the online communications session
may fail to open the forum file when required.
In addition to the options listed above, there are two list boxes in this
dialog.
52 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
The first list box (on the left) indicates the order in which the forums
will be processed. This order can be changed by first pressing the Reorder
forums check box, and then double clicking on the forum names in the list
box, in the order that you wish to process them.
If you have selected the Reorder forums check box, as each item is selected
from the list box (by double clicking the left mouse button), the forum
entry will be moved to the appropriate location in the forum processing
order list box.
The second list box (on the right) contains the currently defined
CompuServe access telephone numbers. The phone number that has been
selected to be dialed is highlighted. You can select a different telephone
number to use from this list box.
Options
There is a variety of options that you can select from this menu, including
Golden CommPass online and offline configuration options, and multiple user
parameter configurations. Each of these options is described in detail on
the following pages.
Edit Forums
The Edit Forums dialog box allows you to work with up to twenty (20)
different forums at a time. It is possible to define additional forums by
creating additional parameters files. See the description of the clone
pushbutton in the Edit Parameters section on page 61.
Forum names
On the left side of this dialog box is a list of the forums in the current
parameters file. Forums which have been selected (press ALT+S to select or
deselect a forum) are identified in a highlighted color. This color can be
set by changing the OS/2 Control Panel screen colors for Help Highlight.
As each of the different forums is selected, the current information about
that forum is displayed on the right side of the dialog box.
Service (Gateway)
At the top of the dialog box, to the right of the list of forums, is the
current forum gateway and forum name. The service, or gateway, can be
selected by choosing one of the available names from the services
combination box. You can also make your selection by pressing the first
letter of the gateway name.
Mode
Below the service combination box are the mode selection radio buttons,
which will determine the mode to use to access the forum. There are three
choices for forum access mode:
∙ Scan message headers
∙ Read new messages
∙ Read waiting messages
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 53
Scan message headers
If you select the option to scan the message headers, the communications
engine will retrieve a list of all new messages by subject. After the
communications engine has retrieved the message headers, you will need to
select those subjects that you are interested in reading.
After selecting (marking) the subjects you are interested in reading, the
communications engine will retrieve the full text of these messages the
next time you go online.
Read new messages
If you select the option to read new messages, then whenever you use the
Connect/Retrieve new messages menu option, the communications engine will
retrieve all new messages on the forum since the last time you visited the
forum.
Read waiting messages
If you select the read waiting option, the communications engine will only
retrieve messages addressed to your userid. This option can be used to
retrieve messages in forum sections that you do not normally visit or
access.
Flags
Below the forum mode choices are several different flag values that you may
need to set. The only flag you will need to set on a regular basis is the
Forum selected flag. This flag can be set with an ALT+S keyboard command,
or you can double-click the forum name to select it as well. This is the
only forum option that you can change without selecting the UPDATE
pushbutton.
You may also need to select the All sections forum flag. If you select
this option, all forum sections will be selected every time you visit the
forum.
This is the recommended (and the default) setting for a forum. If new
forum sections are introduced, you may not see messages from those sections
if you do not have this option set.
State flags
The forum state flags are used to indicate the current state of the pending
forum activities. These include online actions for the communications
engine, as well as offline actions for you.
The state flags provide indicators for the following forum actions:
∙ unread messages
∙ unmarked headers
∙ unviewed catalogs
∙ online actions (i.e., messages to upload)
∙ library actions (i.e., library of file download requests) pending.
54 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
You should not need to change any of these forum state flags since Golden
CommPass will normally maintain the state of these flags automatically.
Status flags
The next group of forum flags are used to indicate the current status of
events for Golden CommPass. They are described below:
The Free flag is used by the accounting module. Turn on this flag if you
are not charged for accessing a particular forum (i.e., you have a free
flag on that forum), and the accounting module will exclude this forum from
the average monthly bill calculation.
The Reset high message number flag is used by the communications engine to
reset the forum's high message number at the end of the session. This flag
should only be turned off if you do not want the communications engine to
reset the forum high message number.
The Locked flag is used by the online communications engine to indicate
that this forum is scheduled to be processed during the current online
session. This flag will prevent the offline message reader component of
Golden CommPass from using any of the forum files used during the online
communications session.
Disposition
In addition to the global parameter setting for append/overwrite status of
the message files, Golden CommPass will also allow you to selectively
append or overwrite each forum's message file.
Section Names
At the right of the dialog box is a list of the forum message section names
for the forum. All of the selected sections will be highlighted. If you
are in update mode, you cannot change the section selections if the All
sections box is checked.
All sections
Immediately below the list of forum sections is a box to select to process
all sections in this forum.
Update section list
Below the list of forum sections and the All sections check box is a check
box to automatically update the list of forum sections the next time you
process that forum.
Pushbuttons
There are also several pushbuttons at the bottom of the dialog box.
Update
In order to change any of the forum configuration information, you must
first press the update pushbutton. This will put the dialog in the update
mode. To end the update mode, press the ok button to save the changes and
end the dialog, or press the cancel button to return to the standard dialog
mode.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 55
Add
You can add up to 20 forum definitions to a single Golden CommPass
parameter file. Once you reach that maximum, you must delete any unused
forum entries or create a new parameters file before you can add more forum
definitions to Golden CommPass. The process for creating a new parameter
file is described on page 61.
When you press the add pushbutton, the following dialog box is displayed.
At the top of the dialog box is a field to enter the name of the new forum
that you want to add to the current forum selection list.
Below the forum name entry field is a list of all forums and services on
CompuServe. You can select a name from this list and the selected forum
name will be copied to the entry field above the list.
If this list of forums is empty, you can press the refresh pushbutton, and
the next time Golden CommPass goes online, it will retrieve the entire list
of CompuServe forums and services.
Note: CompuServe will identify those forums that are included with the
Basic Services plan as (FREE). Those forums identified with a (+) are not
included in the Basic Services plan. Those marked with a ($) carry an
additional access charge.
Delete
If you press the delete pushbutton, you will be prompted to confirm that
you want to remove the current forum name from the list. If you respond
YES, indicating that you do want to remove that forum, you will be prompted
again to determine if the FORUMNAME.SEC file should be deleted from the
hard disk.
Edit Parameters
The Edit Parameters dialog box is one of the most integral parts of the
Golden CommPass system. It is from this dialog box that most of the
options for accessing CompuServe can be configured.
Each of the fields in this dialog box are described in more detail below:
Path to parameter files
This is the drive and path that contains the parameter files that you will
use.3
Select parameter file to edit
This list box contains the parameter files in the current directory.
____________________
3 At this time, it is not possible to change the parameter path. Golden
CommPass will always use the same path that was used to start Golden
CommPass.
56 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Any parameter files you have previously opened are displayed in black
letters, while any unopened parameter files are displayed in grey. The
current (or default) parameter file is displayed in the system color used
for the Help Highlight. The Help Highlight color is defined in the system
control panel for OS/2 1.x, or in the system folder - setup color scheme
folder for OS/2 2.0.
Default parameter file
This box is checked when the currently selected parameter file is the
default parameter file. Checking this box for an unopened parameter file
will open it.
The default parameter file is remembered from session to session. Whenever
you start Golden CommPass, the last default parameter file will
automatically be selected as the default by Golden CommPass, unless you
have supplied a Golden CommPass command line option to override the
default.
Modem parameters
There are several modem parameters that you can configure on the parameters
dialog box. You can set the various modem parameters for the
communications engine to use when establishing or terminating the
connection with CompuServe.
Initialize
The modem initialization string is sent to the modem whenever an online
session is started. This initialization string should be used to properly
configure your modem for accessing CompuServe and for dialing the telephone
number.
The default initialization string is:
ATV1&C1&D2DT
This initialization string requests the modem's attention (AT), requests
the modem to display result codes as words (V1), that the modem track the
status of the carrier detect signal (&C1) and that the modem monitor the
DTR signal and hang up the telephone when DTR is turned off (&D2). The
final portion of the initialization string requests that the modem dial the
phone using tones (DT).
This string should work with most modems, although you may need to provide
further customization of this initialization string. The options for the
modem initialization string are discussed in more detail in Appendix A of
this manual, beginning on page 99.
If you have any problems getting Golden CommPass to connect with
CompuServe, contact our Technical Support department. We maintain a
complete database of modems that are in use today, and an appropriate
initialization string for each one.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 57
Reset
The modem reset string is sent to the modem whenever an online session is
terminated. However, before sending this string, Golden CommPass will
toggle the DTR signal to cause the modem to disconnect. This is controlled
by the &D2 setting in the modem initialization string. If your modem does
not support this option, then you need to be certain that your modem reset
string will also hang up the telephone.
The default reset string is:
?2+++?2ATH0^M
This reset string will pause for 2 seconds (?2), request the modem to
return to the command state (+++), pause 2 more seconds (?2) and issue the
modem command to hang up the telephone (ATH0). The carriage return (^M) at
the end of the reset string forces the reset string to be sent to the
modem.
The modem reset string is discussed in more detail in Appendix A of this
manual, beginning on page 99.
Online Report
The online report is the string used by the communications engine to
determine when a successful connection with CompuServe has been made.
The default is NECT, which is the last four characters of CONNECT. Most
modems will report the CONNECT message when the connection has been
established. You must use verbose result codes (V1 for most modems) for
this online report to work properly.
Any 4 character string could be used for the online report, but NECT works
well for most configurations.
In some special situations, there is no way to determine when the
connection has been successfully established (for example, if you are using
a modem pool connected to a mainframe). In those cases, you may want to
use an online report of NONE. This will force Golden CommPass to assume
that the connection has been established as soon as the modem
initialization string and telephone number has been transmitted to the
modem. This setting is usually used in conjunction with a special logon
script.
Failure Report
The failure report is the string used by the communications engine to
determine when the modem has not been able to establish a connection with
CompuServe.
The default is HAYS, which should be used if you are using a 100% Hayes
compatible modem. If you use this option, Golden CommPass will look for
the following failure results:
NO CARRIER
ERROR
NO DIALTONE
NO DIAL TONE
BUSY
NO ANSWER
58 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
VOICE
If your modem does not support all of the results listed above, you may
still be able to use the HAYS setting.
If you are experiencing problems using HAYS, you may want to try using
RIER, the last four characters of NO CARRIER. However, care should be used
when you choose this option. Many modems will also report the call
progress status by returning CARRIER 2400. Golden CommPass may interpret
this progress report as a failure to connect.
Communications (Comm) Port
The communications port combination box contains a list of the installed
communications ports on your computer.
On a PC/AT or compatible computer (ISA bus), OS/2 will support a maximum of
two communications ports. If you are using OS/2 2.0, it may be possible to
configure more than 2 communications ports. See the OS/2 command reference
for more information on these options.
On a PS/2 or other computer supporting the micro-channel architecture, OS/2
will support up to three communications ports.
Select the communications port you intend to use for communicating with
CompuServe.
Note: If you are using a non-standard (i.e., not supplied with OS/2) serial
device driver, Golden CommPass may not be able to automatically configure
your communications adapter. Contact our Technical Support department if
you have any specific questions about this.
User Information
Immediately below the group of modem parameters are three fields containing
user information. This information is used for accessing and configuring
CompuServe.
Userid
The Userid field should contain your CompuServe Userid. Do not put any
extra spaces or other characters into this field. Just enter the
CompuServe supplied userid.
Your userid should be in one of the following formats:
7xxxx,xxxx
1xxxxx,xxxx
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 59
Password
Specify your CompuServe password in this field. It will not be displayed,
but it will be stored in an encrypted format on your hard disk.
If you do not want to store your password on the hard disk (even though it
will be encrypted), enter a single asterisk (*), and the Golden CommPass
communications engine will prompt you for your password whenever an online
session is started.
Name
Enter the name to use as your forum name when you join a new forum.
Note: You can change your name on a single forum by issuing a User Command
for that forum. See the Edit/User Command option on page 47.
Path Information
Message (Msg) Path:
The message path is used to specify the drive and directory where you want
to store the message files (FORUMNAME.MSG). Many other Golden CommPass
files will also be created in this drive and directory.
In addition, this is the drive and directory that Golden CommPass will use
as the default directory whenever you use the Open dialog box.
Note: You should specify this path as a fully qualified name, including the
drive and all subdirectories.
Download (D/L) Path:
The download path is used to specify the drive and directory where you want
to store any files that you download from CompuServe.
Note: You should specify this path as a fully qualified name, including the
drive and all subdirectories.
Message (Msg) Files
The Append/Overwrite options allow you to set a default disposition for
your message files (FORUMNAME.MSG).
This is a global setting and will apply to all forums, including the MAIL
forum.
Golden CommPass initially sets this option to overwrite the message file
every time you access the forum. This causes any previous messages in that
file to be lost when new messages are downloaded.
You may change the default to append, so that any new messages will be
added to the end of the message file. If you choose to use append, you
will need to manually delete or rename the message files periodically to
prevent them from overtaking your entire hard disk.
Another option is to configure the message file disposition for each forum.
This is described on page 55 in the Edit Forums section of this manual.
60 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Log Time/Transfers
The Log Time option is used to keep track of the amount of time you spend
in each forum.
This information will be stored in a log file in the same subdirectory as
the COMMPASS.EXE program. The format of this file is LOGxx-yy.CIS, where
xx is the 2 digit month when the online session took place, and the yy is
the year.
If you select the Log Transfers option, Golden CommPass will save
information on each file transfer (upload or download) request to the
XFER.LOG file.
Save Outbox
The Save Outbox options are used to indicate your preference for saving
outgoing messages that you compose. It can be turned on or off for the
MAIL forum and for all other forums.
Pushbuttons
Across the bottom of the dialog box are several pushbuttons that are used
to select other dialogs (Edit forums, Edit telephone numbers), as well as
duplicating or deleting the current parameter file.
Clone
Pressing the CLONE pushbutton will bring up a dialog box which will prompt
for a new three character extension to be used for the new parameters file.
The new parameters file will be an exact duplicate of the current parameter
file.
The first part of the new parameters file name will be PARAMS. You need to
select the three character extension to be used for the new parameters file
name.
Delete
Pressing the DELETE pushbutton will delete the current parameters file. If
you have turned on the Confirm Deletes option (see Default dialog box on
page 64), you will be prompted to confirm the parameter file deletion
before it is actually deleted.
Edit Section Names
Select this option to add, edit or delete the section names for the forums
defined in the current parameters file.
Golden CommPass maintains information about the different forum sections
that you use on CompuServe in a FORUMNAME.SEC file. There are several
different ways to keep this file up-to-date.
The first, and easiest, way to update the file is to check the Update
section check box on the Edit forum options dialog. This is described in
more detail on page 55. When you use this option, your forum section file
will be updated the next time you access CompuServe.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 61
Another way to keep the list of sections up-to-date is to invoke the Golden
CommPass communications option by selecting the Connect/Join forums menu
option. This will process all forums in your current selection list. The
entire process of joining a forum is described in the Setting CompuServe
Forum Parameters section on page 25.
While the methods previously described are convenient, they do require you
to sign on to CompuServe to update the list. Often, these options are too
costly.
Therefore, Golden CommPass also provides a way to easily update just one or
two sections. This dialog makes it quite easy to manually edit the forum
section names (or library names). An example of the Edit Section Names
dialog box is displayed below.
At the top of the dialog box is a selector to edit either the forum section
names or the data library names. Selecting either radio button will cause
the list box on the right to be filled with the names and numbers of the
forum sections. As you select different forums from the left list box, the
section names will be updated in the right list box.
As you select the section name and section number from the right list box,
they will be displayed in the entry fields below. You can then make any
necessary changes to the forum sections or data library names.
After you change the contents of the entry field, select the appropriate
action by pressing one of the pushbuttons at the bottom of the dialog.
The SAVE pushbutton will write the current file out to the hard disk.
Pressing the SAVE pushbutton will also dismiss this dialog box.
The UPDATE pushbutton will revise the description of a forum section name
or data library name. This change will be stored in memory until the SAVE
pushbutton is pressed.
The ADD pushbutton can be used to add a new section name or data library
name to the current forum. Forum sections and message libraries must be
numbered between 0 and 17.
The DELETE pushbutton will be used to remove the current selection from
memory. Remember to press the SAVE pushbutton to rewrite the sections file
to your hard disk.
The CANCEL pushbutton will dismiss the current dialog without making any
changes.
Edit Telephone Numbers
Select the Edit Telephone Numbers option to edit the telephone numbers or
to change the telephone number currently selected.
On the left side of this dialog box is a list of the currently defined
CompuServe access telephone numbers. You can specify up to six (6)
telephone numbers in Golden CommPass. It is possible to define additional
phone numbers by creating additional parameters files. See the description
of the clone pushbutton in the Edit Parameters section on page 61.
To the right of the list of numbers are several choices for setting the
configuration of the CompuServe access node that this phone number will
use.
62 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Select the appropriate line speed for the currently selected telephone
number. Golden CommPass allows you to select rates between 300 bps and
19200 bps. At this time, CompuServe does not support line speeds greater
that 9600 bps, so there is no advantage to setting your modem line speed to
a higher data transfer rate.
In addition to the line speed, you must also select the appropriate
service. The service is really a specification of the type of network that
you will be using to connect to CompuServe. If you are dialing directly
into the CompuServe network, make sure that CompuServe is selected. If you
are dialing into one of the other networks, select the appropriate entry.
This will cause the Golden CommPass communications engine to invoke the
appropriate logon script after establishing a connection with the specified
network.
The last option in the list of services is user script. This option should
be used if you are dialing into a network that is not specifically
identified, or if you have other unique logon requirements (such as dialing
into a modem pool on the mainframe). This option can also be used to
specify the NOCTRLC logon script if you are having difficulty getting your
local CompuServe node to recognize the control-c (^C) that Golden CommPass
uses during the default sign-on process.
At the bottom of the dialog box are several pushbuttons. The add
pushbutton will allow you to add new telephone numbers to the phone list.
There is currently a maximum of 6 phone numbers. The delete pushbutton
will remove a phone number from the list.
There is also a pushbutton for selecting the telephone number to be dialed.
When you select a new telephone number, the previously selected telephone
number is automatically deselected. If the list box is highlighting the
currently selected telephone number, the SELECT pushbutton will be
disabled.
Display Icons
Golden CommPass will create several different types of children icons
(objects) to indicate offline or online activities that are pending.
Selecting this option will allow you to specify the criteria for displaying
these children icons.
Offline icons are defined as message files (*.MSG) and message subject
header (*.QSN) files. These represent actions that you must take before
you go back Online (using the Connect menu options).
Online icons represent a variety of activities that the Golden CommPass
communications engine will handle the next time you sign onto CompuServe.
For example, any MAIL to be delivered, message threads marked to be
downloaded and forum messages to be uploaded are all considered to be
Online actions, and are represented by appropriate icons. The different
types of icons are described in the Child Window Objects section on page
29.
There are four different levels of icon creation that you can specify for
both offline and online activities.
If the All forums radio button is selected, then an icon will be created
for every forum in the current parameters file that has pending activities.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 63
If the Active forums radio button is selected an icon (object) will be
created for every forum that is currently selected (shown in a highlighted
color in the Edit Forums dialog box) that has pending activities.
If the New forums radio button is selected an icon will be created only if
the forum is identified as having unread messages or unmarked headers.
If the None radio button is selected, icons will not be created.
The default specifications for Golden CommPass are to display new icons for
offline actions and all icons for Online actions.
Defaults
Select this option to set confirmation levels for Golden CommPass, or to
set the defaults for the editor or for invoking the communications engine.
From this dialog box you can set a variety of default parameters and
actions for Golden CommPass.
Confirm options
If the File delete box is checked, a confirmation (YES or NO) message box
will be displayed before any file is deleted.
If the Params save box is checked, a confirmation message box will be
displayed before the current parameters (PARAMS.xxx) file is written to
disk.
If the Exit CommPass box is checked, a message box will be displayed before
Golden CommPass terminates normally. Since Golden CommPass conforms to CUA
guidelines, the F3 key is used to terminate the program.
If the Start Comm Engine box is checked, the Start communications dialog
box will be displayed before an online communications session is started.
If this box is not checked, then the start communications dialog box will
not appear.
Other options
If the Word wrap box is checked, the Message Window will default to using
word wrap.
Note: Word wrap always defaults to off for the MAIL forum.
If the Auto bookmark box is checked, Golden CommPass will automatically set
a bookmark for you whenever you close a message file. The only exception
is if you are viewing the last message in the file.
The next time you start Golden CommPass, all message files that have
automatic bookmarks set will automatically be opened and properly
positioned to the message where the automatic bookmark was set. The
automatic bookmark will then be erased.
If the Auto open msgs box is checked, Golden CommPass will automatically
open all message files as soon as they are completely indexed.
If the Sort catalogs box is checked, Golden CommPass will sort all catalog
files into library section and file name order. Any older entries which
exist in the catalog file will be ignored and will not be displayed.
64 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
If this box is not checked, then the catalog file will be displayed in
exactly the order that it was created.
The next group of options allows you to specify the path and file name of
the editor of your choice. Do not specify any parameters for your editor.
Golden CommPass will automatically append the file to be edited to the name
specified here as the editor. Golden CommPass is initially set up to use
the OS/2 System Editor (E.EXE).
You must also specify in which type of OS/2 session the editor will run.
Select one of the radio buttons:
Full screen
OS/2 text window
OS/2 Presentation Manager
Note: E.EXE requires the Presentation Manager option.
At the bottom of the dialog box, there are several options to use when
Golden CommPass invokes the communications engine. The mode will always be
set to Window.
The startup box allows you to select the type of communications window to
be created whenever you start an online session.
If you select normal, a communications window that is approximately 70
columns by 24 rows will be created. If you have selected the Save window
position option from the communications window, the normal selection will
use your previously saved window size and position.
If you select minimize, the communications window will be created as an
icon at the bottom of the screen. This is the recommended mode of
operation for Golden CommPass.
Under OS/2 2.0, this will not be the case. Instead, the OS/2 workplace
shell will default to hide the communications window. You can change this
behavior from the Open/Settings dialog box where Golden CommPass is
installed under the OS/2 workplace shell. For more information, see
Installing Golden CommPass on the OS/2 Desktop on page 16.
If you select maximized, a maximum size window will be created. The size
of the maximized window will be the smaller of an 80 column by 24 row
communications window, or the size of the video screen.
Online Defaults
Select this option to set online defaults for the Golden CommPass
communications engine.
From this dialog box you can set a variety of default online parameters
that are used by the communications engine. Each of these options is
described in detail below.
Auto return to main window
Selecting this option will automatically restore the keyboard focus to the
main Golden CommPass window after the communications window is closed.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 65
Timed online activities.
This option is not currently being used by Golden CommPass.
Use B+ protocol to upload MAIL
Selecting this option will force Golden CommPass to create a temporary file
with the contents of the message to be uploaded, and then use the B+ file
transfer protocol to upload the temporary file. This file will be
transmitted as a normal CompuServe MAIL message. This is a good option to
select if you have regular problems with noisy telephone lines.
B+ protocol packet size
Select the packet size (blocksize) to be used for a B+ file transfer. If
you have a clean telephone line, selecting a larger packet size will
increase your overall file transfer speed. However, whenever errors are
detected, it will take longer to recover from those errors. The default
Golden CommPass blocksize is 512 byte blocks.
If you regularly experience errors during a B+ file transfer, try reducing
the size of the B+ packet.
Ignore carrier detect (CD) checking
Some modems erroneously report the status of the carrier detect line giving
false indications of dropped carrier. If you are experiencing this type of
trouble, selecting this option may help. However, it may also be difficult
for Golden CommPass to detect when an interactive session has been
terminated.
Fast drop-off from CompuServe
Selecting this option will force the Golden CommPass communications engine
to issue the OFF command. With some modems, the connection will be lost
before CompuServe has reported back the actual connect time.
If this option is not selected (the default), then the Golden CommPass
communications engine will issue a LOG command to terminate the session.
This will insure that you see the exact length of time of your session
(according to CompuServe).
Inter-character initialization delay
Golden CommPass normally transmits initialization characters to the modem
at the maximum speed possible. If you are experiencing modem
initialization problems, then selecting this option will allow you to
specify a time delay (in milliseconds) to be used between each
initialization character sent to the modem.
Redial delay
If this option is selected, enter the number of seconds to wait between
attempts to redial the telephone number. This number is also the number of
seconds that the communications window will remain visible after the normal
termination of a communications session.
66 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Line clearing character
The default line clearing character is ^U. This value may not work
correctly with some international networks. This option allows you to
change the default line clearing character.
Suppress sending line clearing character
If you select this option, then the Golden CommPass communications engine
will not send the line clearing character to remove any line noise.
Normally, this character is sent at the beginning of every CompuServe
command to clear any residual characters in the input buffer that may
accumulate on noisy telephone lines. If any line noise was detected,
Golden CommPass will display the ^U in the communications window.
Suppress sending ^P
This option is not currently being used by Golden CommPass.
Suppress READ WAITING on Q forums
By default, Golden CommPass will issue a command to retrieve any messages
specifically addressed to you. Select this option if you do not want to
retrieve those messages while processing the message headers.
Suppress SCAN WAITING on R forums
By default, Golden CommPass will issue a command to see if there are any
messages addressed to you when it enters the forum where you have selected
the option to download all new messages. Turning this option on will
bypass this process.
Read threads in numeric order
Golden CommPass normally retrieves messages in the message thread sequence
in which they are stored on CompuServe. If you would prefer to retrieve
these messages sequentially, by message number, then select this option.
Use software XON/XOFF flow control
By default, the Golden CommPass communications engine uses hardware flow
control RTS/CTS. If you select this option, Golden CommPass will configure
the communications port to use XON/XOFF flow control. Be sure to add the
appropriate commands to your modem initialization string so the modem knows
you want to use software flow control. See your modem manual for more
information on setting your modem for software flow control.
Use Micro interrogation sequence at logon.
In order to have CompuServe pre-set certain forum options, Golden CommPass
exchanges information with CompuServe whenever you sign on. This exchange
of information tells CompuServe that it is communicating with Golden
CommPass, and it allows CompuServe to make certain assumptions about the
communications capabilities of the program.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 67
Keep track of high message number
Selecting this option will force Golden CommPass to keep track of the forum
high message number and manually reset it to the correct value before
exiting the forum. We have found that this generally works better than
having CompuServe automatically update your forum high message number.
Warning: Dropped characters during the CompuServe report of the forum high
message number could cause problems the next time you access the forum.
Upload new messages first
If this option is selected, Golden CommPass will upload any new messages
from you before retrieving any new messages you have requested to download.
Online Log
There are two selections for logging the Golden CommPass online session.
Entire session
Selecting this menu item will save the contents of the entire online
session to ONLINE.LOG. Selection is indicated by a check mark next to the
menu item.
Last 350 lines
Selecting this menu item will save the last 350 lines (approximately) of
the online session in the ONLINE.LOG file. Selection is indicated by a
check mark next to the menu item.
How Many
When the dialog box is presented, enter the number of ONLINE logs that you
want to keep. Golden CommPass will automatically delete the oldest online
log, and cycle the other logs so that they will be in chronological order.
For example, the oldest log will be named ONLINE.LOG. The next oldest will
be named ONLINE01.LOG, and the one after that will be named ONLINE02.LOG,
up to the maximum number that you have specified.
Usage Statistics
Select this option to display CIS usage statistics by invoking the
statistics processor.
Note: In order to use the Usage Statistics program, you must have the Log
Time option selected. See Log Time/Transfers on page 61.
Note: This option has not been implemented at this time.
Window
On the Window menu are choices for arranging or selecting specific child
windows.
68 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass

child windows will be resized and repositioned in a tiled fashion, so that
no child window will cover another child window.
Cascade
Selecting this option will rearrange the child windows. When selected, the
child windows will be resized and repositioned in a cascading fashion so
that each window will overlay most of the preceding window.
Hide
Select this option to hide the current window from view. Even though the
window is no longer visible, it is still open. Use the Unhide option to
restore the window.
This option is especially useful when used in conjunction with the
Window/Tile option.
Unhide
Select this option to restore any windows that were previously hidden using
the Window/Hide option.
The Unhide dialog box displays a list of the forums which have been hidden
from view. You can select those forums that you wish to make visible and
press the OK pushbutton to be able to see them.
Child Windows
At the bottom of the Windows menu is a list of the currently opened child
windows. This is especially useful for those using the keyboard to select
a specific forum to process.

copyright information and additional registration information about Golden
CommPass. A copy of this dialog box is illustrated below.
Version information is provided for the following Golden CommPass
components:
Base Golden CommPass program (COMMPASS.EXE)
Golden CommPass common modules (COMMPASS.DLL)
Golden CommPass communications engine (COMMPCOM.DLL)
Golden CommPass CompuServe scripts (COMMPCIS.DLL)
When you call for technical support, please make sure that you have the
current version information for the modules listed above. Also, be sure to
have your Golden CommPass registration number, which is also displayed in
this dialog box.
Index Windows
There are several different types of index windows used by Golden CommPass.
The index windows conform to the specifications for the Multiple Document
Interface (MDI). These MDI windows include:
∙ Message Index
∙ Subject Index
∙ Data Library Index
You can open the index windows in two different ways. The easiest way is
to simply double-click the left mouse button (or use the Restore CTRL+F5)
on the offline action icon. The second way to open the index window is to
use the File/Open option. This will open a message file, subject header
file or catalog file. See the Open dialog box on page 43.
Message Index
This message index window contains an index of the messages in the file you
have selected to read. It is illustrated below:
Select the message subject you want to read using the cursor movement keys
and pressing the ENTER key, or double-click the left mouse button while
pointing to the entry you want to read.
Selecting a message subject to read causes Golden CommPass to display a
Message Window for the forum. The Message Window will contain the text of
the message you have selected. The Message Window is described in more
detail on page 72.
70 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Once you have opened the Message Window, you can navigate through the
messages in the current file from within that message window. You can also
return to the main Golden CommPass window and select another file to
process. Of course, you can always select another message (using the
Message Window Locate menu) within the current message file and continue
reading messages.
When the Message Index is minimized, it is displayed as a book. See the
illustration above, and refer to the Read MAIL icon.
You can also expand and collapse the entries in this message index window.
This can be done by selecting expand or collapse from the View menu. You
can also click the left mouse button on the plus or minus sign icon in the
index window. Clicking on a plus icon will expand the entries below the
current message subject entry. Clicking on a minus icon will collapse the
entries below the current message subject entry.
Subject Index
This window contains a list of subjects (message headers) which are
available to download from a CompuServe forum. The list contains two
different types of entries.
∙ Section numbers/names
∙ Subjects/message counts
Selecting the subject entry will schedule Golden CommPass to download the
entire message text for that subject (message thread) during the next
online session. The number at the end of the subject name (in parentheses)
is the number of replies in this message thread.
You can also select the section number/name to retrieve the entire forum
section message base. When you select the section entry, all of the
subjects in that section will automatically be selected (or deselected).
Make your selection by clicking the left mouse button on the line
containing the entry you want to download, or positioning the highlight
over the subject and pressing the SPACE BAR.
When the subject index is minimized, it will be displayed as a clipboard.
See the illustration above, and refer to the Mark IBMOS2.QSN icon.
Data Library Index
This window contains a list of the files that are available to be
downloaded for this particular forum.
Files cannot be downloaded directly from the catalog index window.
Instead, you must open the Data Library (Message) Window by double-clicking
on the file you wish to download. You can also use the cursor movement
keys and press the SPACE BAR to select the file and then press the ENTER
key.
Once the Data Library Window has been created, you can navigate the
catalog, search for specific files or request files to download. The Data
Library Window is very similar in behavior to the Message Window. In fact,
it is exactly the same window, with several options that do not apply to
catalogs removed from the Message Window.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 71
The default option for processing catalogs is to sort the entries into
library and catalog order. If this option is in effect, any duplicate
catalog entries found in the catalog file will be properly handled, and
only the most recent catalog entry will be displayed.
If you would prefer to display all catalog entries, without sorting them,
you can change the default processing on the Options/Defaults dialog, which
is described on page 64. You may see slightly faster performance if you
choose not to sort your data library catalogs.
When the Data Library Index is minimized, it is displayed as a card file.
See the illustration above, and refer to the Catalog OS2DEV.CAT icon.
Note: If you are using the default option to sort the data library catalog
entires, you cannot select an entry from this window until it has been
completely loaded and sorted into the proper sequence.
Message Window
The Message Window is used to display the text of the current message in
the forum message file. From this window, you can navigate to other
messages in the same forum message file, search the message file, print
selected messages, compose new messages, reply to existing messages or
select the next forum message file.
The Message Window also supports a user configurable button bar to quickly
enter your most commonly used commands. The pushbuttons are located at the
top of the window, below the menu.
As illustrated below, the message window (on the right side of the
illustration) appears to be a child of the main window. It is not. It is
a secondary window, and can be placed anywhere on the OS/2 desktop.
Note: This same window is also used to display the detail information from
the Data Library Index.
Scrolling Messages
The Message Window can be scrolled forward to the next screen, or to the
next message, by pressing the SPACE BAR. If there is no additional text to
display for this message, Golden CommPass will automatically scroll to the
next message in the forum, and display the text of that message.
This window can also be scrolled forward one message at a time by double-
clicking the right mouse button on the message window, or by pressing the
numeric keypad PLUS (+) key.
Messages can be scrolled backward one message at a time by double-clicking
the left mouse button on the message window, or by pressing the numeric
keypad MINUS (-) key.
In either case, you can also use the accelerator keys defined on the menu,
which are ALT+P for the previous message, and ALT+N for the next message.
These message scrolling options, as well as several others, are described
in more detail in the Locate section of this manual on page 83.
72 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Reply Window
When you select one of the reply options from the Messages menu, the
Message Window is split horizontally and a Reply Window is created below
the Message Window. This feature allows you to continue to read the
original message you are replying to while you are composing your reply.
The standard multi-line entry field (MLE) provided by OS/2 is used as the
editor for composing messages to be uploaded to CompuServe. While this is
not a full-featured editor, it is sufficient to meet the requirements for
composing messages to be uploaded.
The Reply Window is very similar in behavior to the OS/2 System Editor
because it uses the same Presentation Manager controls.
While you are replying to a message, or composing a new message, you can
view other messages from the message file by searching for specific text,
or by selecting any of the Locate menu options.
You can switch back and forth between the two windows (Message and Reply)
by pressing the F6 key.
Adjusting size of Reply Window
When a Reply Window is created, the Message window will be split
horizontally, approximately in half.
However, you can adjust the size of the Reply Window using the mouse4.
Place the mouse pointer in the small area between the two windows. When
you have properly positioned the pointer, it will change its shape to a
small horizontal bar with a double-headed vertical arrow. Pressing and
holding the left mouse button, stretch the Reply Window frame to the size
that you want, then release the mouse button.
When you change the size of the Reply Window, it will be remembered the
next time the Reply Window is created. In addition, when you select the
Write Message option (to compose a new message), the Reply Window will fill
the entire Message Window.
Composing Long Replies
CompuServe currently limits the size of a single forum message to
approximately 2547 characters or 93 lines. This is approximately 30 lines
of 80 characters. In order to eliminate the need to worry about this size
restriction, Golden CommPass allows you to create an entire reply as a
single message. If your reply exceeds the permitted size of a single
CompuServe message, a warning tone is issued, indicating that you have
exceeded the limit. You can continue typing and complete your entire
message.
When you have completed your message, select one of the Post options.
Golden CommPass will check the size of the message. If it is too big to
fit into a single CompuServe message slot, the Send Multi-Part Message
dialog box will be displayed. This dialog box is illustrated below.

where you want to split into multiple parts. The approximate number of
message segments to store the message is identified at the top of the
dialog box.

for the current message segment is also displayed in the dialog box.
You must position the cursor in the Reply Window at the location where you
want to split the message, and then press the SEND NEXT SEGMENT pushbutton.
If you want to change any of the text in the Reply Window, you can press
the RETURN TO EDIT pushbutton.
This dialog box remains on the screen until all the message segments have
successfully been stored for transmission to CompuServe.
File
The items contained on this menu will allow you to manipulate the message
you are currently viewing or composing.
Import
This option is disabled unless the message Reply Window is displayed. In
that case, File/Import will display the standard Open dialog box, described
on page 43. When you select a file to open, the contents of that file will
be imported into the Reply Window.
Next Forum
Selecting this option will minimize the currently selected message file,
and automatically select and open the next forum message file. All of the
message files currently opened will be displayed sequentially. When you
reach the end of the list of opened files, the first message file will be
displayed again.
Bookmark
Selecting the Bookmark option allows you to place a bookmark at the current
forum message location so that you can easily return to the same location.
The Bookmark dialog box can be used either to place a bookmark or to view
(display) a previously saved bookmark. You can also remove any bookmarks
you have previously placed.
At the top of the Bookmark dialog box is an entry field where you can enter
up to 255 characters of text. Golden CommPass initializes this field with
the absolute forum message number. You can type over that number and enter
any information that is meaningful to you.
Any previously placed bookmarks will be displayed in the list box. You can
choose to remove any of these bookmarks by selecting a bookmark from the
list box, and selecting the Remove radio button before pressing the OK
pushbutton.
You also have the option to Remove all of the previously saved bookmarks
for the current forum.
Note: Bookmarks will be remembered from one session to the next.

Save
This will save a copy of the message to the FORUMNAME.SAV file.
Save As
This option is similar to the File/Save option except that the Save as
option gives you an opportunity to specify the file name to use to save the
current message.
Note: The Save as dialog box varies slightly from the standard CUA Save as
dialog box by including a files list box.
At the top of the dialog box is an entry field which is used to specify a
fully qualified file name or to specify a pattern to use to select files to
display in the files list box.
The currently selected drive and directory are displayed immediately below
the file name entry field.
On the left of the screen, a list box containing all of the files in the
current directory is displayed.
On the right of the screen, a list box containing all of the drives and
subdirectories on the system is displayed.
Note: If you select Save as while the Reply Window is visible, you can
choose to save either the reply or the original message. Once you have
saved a reply, to continue composing that reply, you will need to readdress
the message and select the File/Import option.
Post
Pressing the F7 key while there is a Reply Window will display the Post
menu. The selections on the Post menu will vary, and some menu items will
be enabled (or disabled) depending on the forum that you are sending the
message to (i.e., the MAIL forum), or the type of message you are sending
(i.e., Private or Public).
Note: The Unformatted Post options will be disabled unless you turn the
Word Wrap option off, and have selected a monospaced font.
Post Message
Selecting this option will post the current response as a public forum

difficulty for other forum members reading the message if their CompuServe
options are set differently than yours. The use of this option is not
recommended.
If the current forum does not support private messages, Golden CommPass
will attempt to send it as a private MAIL message.
Note: This option is normally disabled until you turn the Word Wrap option
off and select a monospaced font.
Mail with Return Receipt
Sends the current response as a private MAIL message, and requests a return
receipt when the addressee receives the message. CompuServe does add an
extra charge for sending mail with a return receipt.
Note: The Return receipt option is not illustrated on the Send menu above.
Continue Editing Reply

If you need to add a form feed at the end of the message, check the form
feed box.
Note: You cannot close the Message Window until the print thread has ended.
Search
This option allows you to search the entire message file beginning at the
current message location for a specific word or phrase.
Using this dialog box, Golden CommPass can be directed to search the entire
message file for a particular text string. You can optionally specify a
case sensitive search.
While the search is in progress, a meter indicating the search progress
will be displayed above the Search for keyword.
You can specify that the message file be searched in either direction
(forward or backward).
Note: You cannot dismiss this dialog box until you have completed at least
one search.
Close with Bookmark
Select this option to close the current message window and set an automatic

Macros
The Macros option can be used for a keyboard macro and it will insert the
text into your reply at the current cursor location. You can also edit the
text of each keyboard macro.
Note: This option is only available when you are replying to a message.
You can use the Macros option to include specific text or phrases in the
body of your message. For example, many users sign their messages in a
particular manner. You can create a macro to generate that signature.
If you want to include a carriage return in your macro, then use the
vertical bar (|) to indicate a carriage return. When the text is inserted,
it will be properly translated for you.
Up to twenty (20) macros can be defined. Each macro is identified by a
letter (from A through T). Press the letter representing the macro you
wish to include in your response, and select the OK pushbutton. You can
also use the mouse or the cursor movement keys to select the macro.
If you want to change the text of a particular macro, you must first select
the macro and then type any changes in the entry field below the list box
and press the UPDATE pushbutton.
When you are finished with this dialog, press the CANCEL pushbutton to
dismiss the dialog box, or press the OK pushbutton to include the currently
selected macro in your reply.

However, you can also respond on any other forum that is defined in your
current forum selection list.
You must select the name of the forum where you want to reply, as well as
the name of the section (except for the MAIL forum). If Golden CommPass
cannot locate the forum section name file, an entry field will be displayed
for you to enter the section number where you want to leave this message.
After properly selecting the forum and section where you want to leave the
reply, select the OK pushbutton to enter the normal reply mode.
If you have the Options/Reply Indicators menu option turned on, Golden
CommPass will add a line to the beginning of the reply to indicate that you
have moved the discussion from another forum.
Start a New Thread
This option will begin a new message thread. You should use this option
when your message is not part of the current message discussion, or when
you need to change the thread to a more appropriate message section. Golden
CommPass will send the message to the addressee in the current message.
Note: This type of change is commonly called a UA, or Use Addressee.
If you have the Options/Reply Indicators menu option turned on, Golden
CommPass will add a line to the beginning of the reply to indicate that you
have moved the discussion from another forum section, or have changed the
thread title.
Reply to Message Recipient
This option will begin a new message thread and send the message to the
userid in the to field of the message you are viewing. You can also change
the message subject or forum section of the reply.
Write a New Message
Select this option to compose a new message on the current forum or any
other forum in your forum selection list.
80 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
The Write a Message dialog box is used for two different but essentially
similar functions.
They are:
∙ Writing a new message.
∙ Forwarding a message to another user/forum.
Specifying the addressee
Enter the name and userid of the person that you wish to send a message to
in the first entry field. If you do not know the name and userid, you can
enter a portion of the name or userid and then press the LOOKUP pushbutton.
This will search your address book for any matching names. All the
matching names will be displayed in the list box on the right side of the
dialog box. Select the individual that you want to send the message to and
press the LOOKUP pushbutton again. This will copy the name and userid that
you have selected to the To: field.
It is also possible to search the address book for a quick reference name.
These quick reference names must be stored in the comment area in your
address book. To edit the address book, see Edit address book on page 48.
Be sure to use one of the formats below:
Enclosed in parentheses (john)
Preceded by an equals sign =john
If you wish to send the message (MAIL forum only) to more than one person,
you can append a SEMI-COLON (;) to the userid/name, and then specify
another userid/name. Sending messages to multiple recipients is more fully
described under the Mail Options dialog box on page 82.
Specifying the subject
Enter the subject of the message you are about to compose. Currently,
CompuServe will only allow a message subject to be 24 characters.
Selecting the forum
The forums defined in the currently selected parameters file are displayed
in the forum list box. At this time, it is not possible to write a message
to a forum that is not defined in the forum selection list.
Selecting the forum section
As you select a forum from the forum list box, the sections list box will
be filled with the names of the sections defined (in FORUMNAME.SEC) for
that forum. If the names are not known, an entry field is displayed so
that you can enter the section number where you want to store the message.

allows you to select options which are not normally available on a regular
forum. Some of the options available by selecting the OPTIONS pushbutton
include:
∙ Send Internet MAIL
∙ ASCII/Binary file transfer
∙ Facsimile transmission (FAX)
∙ Multiple recipients (address lists)
When you select the OPTIONS pushbutton, the following dialog box will be
displayed:
This Mail Options dialog box allows you to select special processing
options which are only available for the MAIL forum.
The fields below the Select Option box will vary as the different Mail
Options are selected by pressing the appropriate radio button.
File Upload
The File Upload option will allow you to upload a file to a user via
CompuServe Mail. You must specify the fully qualified path, including the
file name, in the entry field. You also need to select the file transfer
type of either ASCII or binary.
MCI Mail
When you select the MCI Mail option, you must supply the MCI id in the
entry field. Golden CommPass will properly format the MCI Mail address for
you.
Internet
When using the Internet Mail gateway, you must provide a valid Internet
address. This includes the user name, organization and domain. Golden
CommPass will properly format the Internet address for you.
You can receive MAIL on CompuServe from Internet users. Your MAIL must be
addressed to userid@compuserve.com. Also, replace any commas in the userid
with periods.
For example, to send an Internet message to Creative Systems Programming
Corporation, you would use 71511.151@compuserve.com.
Telex or TWX
To use the Telex option, you must supply the Telex number and answerback.
Golden CommPass will properly format the address for you.
Facsimile (FAX)
To send a fax using CompuServe, you must specify the fax telephone number
to dial. You can also specify the intended recipient's name. Golden
CommPass will properly format the fax address for you.

The Options menu is illustrated below:
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 85
Set Font
The Set Font dialog box allows you to change the font used by Golden
CommPass for reading and writing messages. Changing the font will only
effect Golden CommPass, and will not change the font for any other
components of OS/2.
On the left side of the dialog box is a list of the fonts (including Adobe
Type fonts) that have been installed on the system for OS/2 to use. The
currently selected font is highlighted.
Immediately to the right is a list of available font sizes, ranging from 6
points to 48 points for any outline fonts installed on your system. For
any of the bitmap fonts, only the available sizes will be displayed.
On the right side of the dialog box are several options that effect the
style of the font currently selected. These typestyle options include:
∙ Boldface
∙ Italic
∙ Underscore
∙ Strikeout
Near the bottom of the dialog box (above the pushbuttons) is a sample of
the font currently selected.
The OK pushbutton will apply the current font selection to the text of the
message window and dismiss the dialog box.
The APPLY pushbutton will apply the current font selection to the text of
the message window, but will leave the Set Font dialog box active, in case
you wish to make any additional changes to the font selection.
Set Colors
The Set Colors dialog box allows you to change the foreground and
background colors used in Golden CommPass for reading and writing messages.
Changing the colors will only effect Golden CommPass, and will not change
the colors for any other components of OS/2.
On the left side of the dialog box is a list of choices for the foreground
color. The current foreground color is highlighted. On the right side of
the dialog box is a list of choices for the background color. The current
background color is highlighted.
Immediately below the color selection list boxes is a sample of the current
color selection.
The OK pushbutton will apply the current color selection to the text of the
message window and dismiss the dialog box.
The APPLY pushbutton will apply the current color selection to the text of
the message window, but will leave the Set Colors dialog box active, in
case you wish to make any additional changes to the color selection.
Save Position
When you check this menu item, the current message window size and location
is remembered from session to session.
86 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
If you remove the check from this menu item, all message window positioning
information is immediately lost.
Button Bar
Selecting this option will enable or disable the use of the Golden CommPass
button bar.
Once this option has been enabled (indicated by a check mark on the menu),
you will need to select the Configure Button Bar option to customize the
button bar for your own use.
Configure Button Bar
This option will only be enabled if the Button bar option is checked.
Selecting this option displays the Configure button bar dialog box.
This dialog allows you to configure the action to associate with each of
the pushbuttons on the button bar.
The button bar contains 10 pushbuttons which are displayed across the top
of the message window. Each pushbutton can be configured to execute any
command that is on any of the menus in the message window.
This dialog box contains two list boxes. The first list box (on the left)
contains the current names of the pushbuttons. You use this list to select
the pushbutton that you want to configure.
The second list box (on the right) contains a list of the command names
(menu items) from all menus in the message window. When you select an
entry from this list, the text will be displayed in the entry field under
this list. You may want to shorten the pushbutton text so that it will fit
properly onto the pushbutton.
At the bottom of this dialog box are several pushbuttons. Selecting the ok
pushbutton will update the currently selected pushbutton with the command
that you have selected, and dismiss the dialog.
The update pushbutton will update the currently selected pushbutton with
the command that you have selected, but will not dismiss the dialog. This
allows you to make several changes to the button bar in a single
configuration session.
Word Wrap
Selecting Word Wrap forces Golden CommPass to automatically display a word
on the next line if it exceeds the width of the message window. This is
the default for all forums except the MAIL forum.
When you turn Word Wrap off, the message is displayed without any Golden
CommPass reformatting options, and more closely resembles the original
poster's message. You need to turn off Word Wrap to properly display any
unformatted messages.
You also need to turn off Word Wrap to post an unformatted message.

Help
There is a variety of Help options that you can select from this menu.
These options are fully explained under the Help menu on the Main Window
description on page 69.
Communications Window
The Communications Window allows you to view the automatic CompuServe
session. Normally, it is a good idea to keep this window minimized or
hidden to improve performance of the communications session.
As illustrated below, the communications window is an independent window,
and may be moved anywhere on the desktop. This is typically called a
secondary window.
This window is used to display all information being read from or sent to
the communications port. It is a transcript of the online session with
CompuServe. In addition, any status, warning or error messages will be
displayed on this window.
Generally speaking, you should not need to view this window during an
automated session and it is recommended that you leave this window
minimized during an automated session.
During an interactive (manual) session, this window will be displayed at
its normal size so that you can properly interact with CompuServe.
Golden CommPass provides a full-featured asynchronous communications engine
that has been customized to support fully automated interaction with
CompuServe electronic mail, data libraries and forums. The CompuServe B+
file transfer protocol is fully supported, and will automatically be
selected whenever a file transfer request is made.
88 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
The CompuServe B+ file transfer protocol includes the capability to
restart, or resume an interrupted file download6. When you request a file
download from CompuServe, the CompuServe host computer will signal Golden
CommPass, which will automatically display the B+ File transfer status
dialog box. This dialog box is described on page 94.
File
The items contained on the main communications menu will allow you to
change the behavior of the communications session.
Hang up Telephone
When you select this option, Golden CommPass will first display a
confirmation message box.
If you respond YES, indicating that you want to hang up the telephone,
Golden CommPass will first toggle the DTR (Data Terminal Ready) signal.
Most modems will hang up the telephone when DTR is turned off. In
addition, Golden CommPass will also send the modem reset string to the
communications port.
If you respond NO, Golden CommPass will not hang up the telephone.
Send Break Signal
Sending a break signal should not be necessary during normal operation of
CompuServe. However, some foreign networks require you to send this
signal, so it is available by selecting this option.
Upload File/Execute Script
Select this option to upload an ASCII file or to start processing a user
script.
When you upload an ASCII file, Golden CommPass will not invoke a file
transfer procedure. Instead, it will merely send the contents of the ASCII
file to CompuServe. This could be used in a conference or any other place
where you have already composed the text that you want to upload.
To invoke a user script, the script file must be in the same directory as
Golden CommPass (COMMPASS.EXE), and must have a SCR extension. See
Appendix B on page 102 for more information on the Golden CommPass
scripting language.
Capture File
Selecting this option will display the Capture menu, which contains the
following entries.
Open Capture File
Select this option to display the Open capture file dialog box. From that
dialog box you can specify the fully qualified name of the file that you
want to use to capture the online session. The Open dialog box is
described in more detail on page 43.

If the capture file already exists, the default action is to append the new
information to the end of the file. If you want to overwrite the existing
file, you must check the overwrite box.
All information sent to or received from CompuServe will be saved in this
capture file until you Pause or Close the capture file.
Close Capture File
Selecting this option will close the capture file.
No additional information will be saved into this file. If you want to add
more information to this capture file, you will need to reopen the file.
Pause Capture File
Selecting this option will temporarily pause the capture file. This means
that no additional information will be saved to the capture file until this
option is selected again, and the file capture is resumed.
Macros
Select this option to display the Online macros dialog box. The contents
of the selected macro will be transmitted to CompuServe. The Online Macros
dialog box is illustrated below.
You can use these macros to automate routine operations while you are
online in the interactive mode.
You can use the online macros to transmit commands or other information to
CompuServe. For example, to switch to menu mode (from the Golden CommPass
command mode default), you can create a macro to issue the CompuServe
command OPTions;MODe;MENu;S.7
If you want to include a carriage return in your macro, then use the
vertical bar (|) to indicate a carriage return. When the text is inserted,
it will be properly translated to a carriage return for you.
Up to twenty (20) online macros can be defined. Each macro is identified
by a letter (from A through T). Press the letter representing the macro
you wish to include in your response, and select the ok pushbutton. You
can also use the mouse or the cursor movement keys to select the macro.
Exit
To close the communications window, select the File/Exit option.

90 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
If it appears to Golden CommPass that the modem is still connected to
CompuServe, Golden CommPass will display a confirmation message box asking
if you want to hang up the telephone.
If you respond NO, Golden CommPass will not attempt to hang up the
telephone.
If you respond CANCEL, Golden CommPass will bypass the normal termination
procedure, and immediately terminate the communications session. Note that
this may still leave the telephone connected to the CompuServe node.
Note: You can request Golden CommPass to provide a confirmation dialog box
before exiting the program. This is described in the Defaults dialog box
on page 64.
Edit
The following items can be selected from the edit menu.
Copy
Selecting Copy from the Edit menu will copy the currently selected text in
the communications window to the system clipboard.
To select text in the communications window, use the mouse pointer to point
at the first character to be selected. Press and hold the left mouse
button to create a rectangle enclosing the text you want to select. When
you release the mouse button, Golden CommPass will change the background
color of the selected text.
Note: When you copy text from the communications window to the system

Options
Set Color
Selecting the Set colors menu item will display the Set Window Colors
dialog box. This dialog box is available to change the colors used in the
Golden CommPass communications window.
You can choose from eight different colors to apply to the Golden CommPass
communications window and four different types of messages that are used.
Golden CommPass Menus and Dialogs ∙ 91
A sample of each color is illustrated on the right side of the dialog box.
The following color settings can be changed:
Foreground Color used to display normal text in the
communications window.
Background Color used as the background for the
communications window.
Error message An error message indicates a serious failure
that prevented Golden CommPass from
continuing normally. User intervention may
be required.
For example, this color is used to indicate
that the carrier has not been detected in the
status line at the top of the communications
window.
Warning message A warning message indicates an event that
Golden CommPass was not expecting and
considers an abnormal event. However, Golden
CommPass was able to recover and continue
communications.
Status message A status message is used to indicate that the
status of the communications session is
changing. It is also a normal event and is
for your information.
For example, this color is used to indicate
that the carrier has been detected in the
status line at the top of the communications
window.
Information An information message indicates that a
normal event has occurred, such as the
opening of the communications port. This
message is for informational purposes only.
Font Size
Select this option to display the Set font dialog box. This dialog can be
used to view and change the default or current font that is used by the
communications window.
All the font sizes the display supports are listed in the Font size (pels)
list box. The current font size is highlighted.
The window preview illustrates the size of the communications window and
its current location on the Presentation Manager desktop.
The current window size and the total size of the display screen are listed
below the Font size list box.
Pressing the change pushbutton will change the font size for the duration
of the communications session.
92 ∙ Menus and Dialogs Golden CommPass
Pressing the save pushbutton will permanently change the font size that the
Golden CommPass communications window uses.
Save Position
When you check this menu item, the current communications window size and
location will be remembered from session to session.
When you turn off the check on this menu item, all communications window
positioning information is immediately lost.
Conference Mode
Selecting the conference mode menu item will display the Conference mode
dialog box.
The conference mode dialog box allows you to type an entire sentence, or
several sentences, that can be sent as one continuous stream of text when
you are ready. You also have the opportunity to correct any errors before
you transmit the text to CompuServe.
This eliminates the typical conference mode problem of everyone waiting
while a slow typist keys in his message, complete with errors.
Note: This dialog is also presented when a script issues the Interactive
command. The script resumes when this dialog box is dismissed.
Terminal Mode
Selecting this menu option discontinues any active Golden CommPass scripts
and places you into an interactive terminal session.
Scroll Back Buffer
Golden CommPass provides access to a 64K scroll back buffer which allows
you to review the messages or other information that has already scrolled
by.
Whenever the communications window is active, you can view the scroll back
buffer by pressing the pgup key, or by using the vertical scroll bar on the
window.
Press the esc key to end the display of the scroll back buffer.
Remain Online
Select this option to remain online (in the terminal mode) after Golden

B+ File Transfer Status
The B+ file transfer status dialog box will automatically be displayed
whenever a B+ file transfer is in progress.
The B+ file transfer status dialog box presents a great deal of information
about the status of the file transfer currently in progress. This
information includes the file name, file size and type of error correction
being used.
There is also information about the estimated amount of time remaining to
complete the file transfer, as well as the number of bytes of data
remaining to be transferred. A bar graph provides visual representation of
the amount of the file that has already been transferred.
To the right of the remaining information field is the time that the file
transfer was started, how long the file transfer has been in progress, the
number of packets successfully transferred and the number of errors that
have been detected.
Below these fields is information about the number of bytes of data that
have been transferred or received, as well as the actual data transfer rate
measured in characters per second (CPS). A bar graph to the left of this
information provides an indication of the relative efficiency of the
current file transfer assuming the maximum transfer speed at the current
modem speed.
An abort transfer pushbutton is available to terminate the file transfer
request. When you press this pushbutton, a confirmation dialog box will be
presented before the command to terminate the file transfer is sent to
CompuServe. It may take 15-30 seconds for CompuServe to acknowledge the
abort request.
Resume B+ File Transfer
The Resume B+ File Transfer dialog box is displayed whenever a B+ file
transfer has been requested, and the file already exists on your computer.
You are given the opportunity to specify a new file name, overwrite the
existing file, attempt to resume the file transfer (if it had been
partially received previously) or to abort the file transfer request.
Online Password
If Golden CommPass has been set to prompt you for a password every time you
sign on to CompuServe, this dialog box will be presented to allow you to
specify the password.
The password will not be displayed in this dialog box, nor will it be
displayed in any of the Golden CommPass generated files.
In addition, if the password that you have specified in the
Options/Parameters dialog is incorrect, this dialog box will be presented
to give you an opportunity to continue the online session. If you do not
respond within 60 seconds, the online session will be terminated.
Note: Specifying the password in this dialog box will not update the
password that is stored in your parameters file.

Redial Dialog Box
If Golden CommPass is unable to successfully establish communications with
CompuServe, the Redial dialog box will be appear.
This dialog box keeps track of the number of times that Golden CommPass has
attempted to connect to CompuServe, and provides a field for you to change
the maximum number of attempts at redialing CompuServe before terminating
the communications session and closing the communications window.
The amount of time between dialing attempts is also displayed on this
dialog box. This time can be changed on the Options/Online defaults dialog
box from the main Golden CommPass window.

Appendix A: Modem Commands
Standard Modem Commands
Golden CommPass provides modem support for most modems supporting the Hayes
modem command set. These commands begin with the AT sequence.
Typically, AT signifies the beginning of a modem command string. However,
you can also use any of the special Golden CommPass modem commands that are
defined in the pages that follow. Golden CommPass will also issue an end-
of-line character after transmitting the initialization or reset modem
strings. If you need to imbed an end-of-line character in your modem
strings, use the ^M command defined below.
AT commands must be prefixed by the AT prefix. Following the prefix, any
combination of commands supported by your modem can be issued. Modem
commands are typically comprised of a single letter or a letter preceded by
an ampersand. A parameter should follow each command, instructing the
modem which command option to use.
Some of the more commonly used Hayes modem commands include:
D Initiate a phone call. X Call progress result codes
P - Use Pulse dialing 0 - provide basic result
T - Use Tone dialing codes - connection, no
carrier and ring detection
E Character echo 1 - provide basic result
0 - Disable codes and connection speed

Golden CommPass Appendix A ∙ 99
Special Golden CommPass Modem Commands
In addition to the commands supported by your modem, Golden CommPass
provides several commands that are useful in getting your modem to properly
initialize or connect with the CompuServe network.
Control Characters
Golden CommPass will allow you to transmit any control characters to the
modem. To transmit a control character, prefix it with a caret (^). Some
commonly used control characters are:
^M Carriage return
^J Linefeed
^N Control N
Delay and Wait Commands
You can also build some small delays into the transmission of the modem
strings, or even wait for the modem to return a specific character value.
These commands are illustrated below.
?n Wait n seconds, where n is a single digit between 1 and 9.
?.n Wait n tenths (1/10) seconds, where n is a single digit between 1
and 9. For example, to wait one and one half seconds, write ?1?.5
?l Wait until the character l is received on the communications port.
Modem Initialization Strings
Whenever Golden CommPass begins an online session, it first opens the
communications port, sets the communications port parameters and transmits
your modem initialization string, followed by the telephone number that you
have selected.
The default modem initialization string is:
ATV1&C1&D2DT
where:
AT indicates the beginning of the modem initialization string, and is
used to wake up the modem.
V1 tells the modem to display the result codes (i.e., CONNECT or NO
CARRIER) as words. This command is required.
&C1 tells the modem to track the status of the carrier detect signal.
This option provides the best way for Golden CommPass to monitor
the connection with CompuServe. If your modem supports this
command, then you should use it.
&D2 tells the modem to monitor the Data Terminal Ready (DTR) signal,
and when the DTR is dropped, the modem will hang up. If your
modem supports this command, you should use it. Some modems also
support the &D3 command. This will also reset the modem after it
hangs up.
DT tells the modem to dial the telephone number that follows, using
tone dialing.
Golden CommPass Appendix A ∙ 100
After Golden CommPass sends this initialization string, it will immediately
send the telephone number that you have selected to dial. If you have
different modem initialization requirements for different telephone numbers
that you use, you can leave the DT off the modem initialization string and
add it to the beginning off the telephone string. For example, if you want
to turn the modem speaker off when dialing from one location (telephone
number 1), but turn the speaker on from another location (telephone number
2), you could use the following modem initialization string, combined with
the two telephone number strings, as illustrated below.
Modem Initialization String:
ATV1&C1&D2
Telephone number 1: Telephone number 2:
M0DT555-1212 M1DT555-1212
If your modem does not accept the initialization string defined above (your
modem returns ERROR), then you may need to remove the &C1 and &D2 from the
initialization string and check to see if your modem provides these same
features via dip switches, or other commands. If you have any questions,
please contact our technical support department.
In addition, some modems need to be reset before you send the modem
initialization string. For those modems, you can use the following modem
initialization string:
ATZ^M?K?1ATDT
where:
AT indicates the beginning of the modem initialization string, and is
used to wake up the modem.
Z is used to reset the modem.
^M issues a carriage return and tells the modem to execute the reset
command.
?K tells the modem to wait for the character K to be echoed back.
After resetting the modem, it will send OK.
?1 tells the modem to pause for one second.
AT again signals the modem to tell it that more commands are coming.
DT tells the modem to dial the phone using touch tones.
Reset String
When Golden CommPass disconnects from CompuServe, or detects that the
carrier signal has been dropped, it will first toggle the DTR (turn it off,
and then back on) before sending the reset string. The default reset
string is:
?2+++?2ATH0^M
where:
?2 tells Golden CommPass to pause for 2 seconds before beginning.
+++ signals the modem to go into a mode where it is ready to receive
additional modem commands.
?2 again tells Golden CommPass to pause for 2 seconds.
AT indicates the beginning of the modem initialization string, and is
used to wake up the modem.
H0 tells the modem to hang up the telephone.
^M tells Golden CommPass to send an end-of-line (i.e., carriage
return) to the modem.
Golden CommPass Appendix A ∙ 101
Appendix B: Golden CommPass Scripts
Golden CommPass supports a primitive scripting language. These scripts are
typically used to facilitate logging on to CompuServe through a foreign
network, but they can also be used to automate portions of an interactive
session, as well as automate your logon procedure when retrieving new
messages and subject headers.
Golden CommPass scripts must be placed in the default directory.
Typically, this is the same directory where the Golden CommPass program
(COMMPASS.EXE) is located. All script files should end with the .SCR
extension.
Within the script file, commands must begin in the first column. A command
cannot be continued to another line. All command lines within the script
must be less than 255 characters. Some script commands have an argument
that follows the command.
Script Commands
The following Golden CommPass script commands are supported:
; - Comment
When a semi-colon is placed in the first column, the rest of the line is
ignored. You can place any additional information on this line. The
contents of the line will not be displayed while the script is executing.
B - Send Break Signal
This command requests Golden CommPass to transmit a break signal to the
host. Some foreign networks require this command.
C - Capture
The capture command (which is similar to the capture option in the
communications engine) allows you to open, close or pause a capture file.
To open a capture file, skip at least one space after the capture command
and enter the name of the file where you want to capture the online
session.
To close the capture file, specify an argument of N. Be sure to skip at
least one space after the C command.
To pause the capture file, specify an argument of P. Again, you must skip
at least one space between the C command and the P argument.
You can also use an argument of Y. This will resume capturing information
to a previously opened capture file. If you have not already opened a
capture file, this will open your MAIL.MSG file as the capture file.
Typically, this is used during a LOGON script to capture specific
information as a mail message.
102 ∙ Appendix B Golden CommPass
E - Echo to screen
The echo command will display the remainder of the line in the
communications window. It is intended to display informational messages,
and is not permanently stored in the scroll back buffer, or anywhere else.
Once the echoed message scrolls off of the communications window, it is
gone.
I - Interactive
The interactive command has no arguments. This command will cause the
Golden CommPass communications engine to display the conference mode dialog
box. This can be used to accept input from the user while the script is
running. The script will be suspended as long as the conference mode
dialog box is active. Information can be transmitted from the conference
mode dialog box to CompuServe. When the conference mode dialog box is
dismissed (by pressing the cancel pushbutton), the script will resume
execution. The conference mode dialog box is described in more detail on
page 93.
K - Delete (Kill) file
This command will delete the specified file from the disk. The file name
must be in the current directory, or you must specify a fully qualified
file name. Any leading blanks between the K command and the file name will
be ignored. You may want to use this command to delete an older version of
a capture file if you run the same scripts regularly.
N - Send user name
There are no arguments for this command. The current user name will be
transmitted to CompuServe. This command is used when joining a new forum,
or by the CONFIG.SCR which must be run when you initially configure your
CompuServe parameters for use with Golden CommPass.
P - Pause
The Pause command will wait the number of seconds specified on this line
before continuing execution of the script.
S - Send
The send command will transmit the entire line to CompuServe. The script
will wait for CompuServe to receive the information transmitted before
executing the next script command.
U - Unconditional Send
The unconditional send command will transmit the entire line to CompuServe.
The script will not wait for CompuServe to receive the information
transmitted. Golden CommPass will immediately execute the next script
command.
W - Wait
You can use the wait command to temporarily suspend the script execution
while waiting for a single character, or a four character string, to be
sent from CompuServe to Golden CommPass.
Golden CommPass Appendix B ∙ 103
The character or string you are waiting for must begin in column 3. Golden
CommPass will wait until the character or string is received from
CompuServe. If it is not received within approximately two minutes, the
Golden CommPass idle timer will disconnect the session.
Sample Script
The script illustrated below is used by Golden CommPass when a local
CompuServe node has difficulties recognizing the ^C CompuServe logon
command. This script can be modified to handle other unique CompuServe
logon requirements.

Appendix C: Start-up Options
Golden CommPass supports several command line arguments. When these
arguments are used in conjunction with a program scheduler, Golden CommPass
can be set up to perform a great number of tasks on a periodic basis.
The following Golden CommPass command line options are supported.
/CMD
/OS2
/PARAMS
Start Online Session
When you specify the /CMD= startup switch, Golden CommPass will immediately
start an online session with CompuServe. You must specify one of the
following types of online sessions as the argument for this switch.
J Join new forums, or update section list for existing forums.
N Retrieve new messages or message subject headers.
O Handle any pending online actions.
P Configure CompuServe parameters
R Read waiting messages on all currently selected forums.
+ Execute the logon script (LOGON.SCR) before retrieving any new
messages or message subject headers.
Exit to Operating System
You can specify either yes or no (Y or N) for the /OS2 command line switch.
This switch is typically used in conjunction with the /CMD switch. If
/OS2=Y is specified, immediately after the online session has terminated,
Golden CommPass will terminate. The default is N.
Specify Parameter File
The /PARAMS= switch allows you to specify a three character parameter file
extension to be used for this Golden CommPass session. Using this switch
will not effect the default parameters file that you select through Golden
CommPass.

Appendix F: Error Messages
Golden CommPass attempts to provide a meaningful error message at the time
an error is first detected. In most cases, this will be while one of the
many dialog boxes within Golden CommPass is in use.
These messages are typically displayed using an OS/2 Presentation Manager
message box. At the bottom of the message box are several pushbuttons,
allowing you to make a simple yes/no or retry/cancel type of decision.
These message boxes should not interrupt the online session, unless
continued execution of the online session is impossible. In those cases,
Golden CommPass will continue to ring the speaker in an attempt to get
attention.
Each of the error messages that Golden CommPass issues is listed below.
They are organized by the window most likely to be active when the message
is displayed. Where necessary, we have included a more detailed
description of the error condition. At the end of each message description
is a summary of the pushbuttons that are displayed at the bottom of the
message box.
Warning: In several cases, selecting the cancel pushbutton will cancel the
entire Golden CommPass session.

118 ∙ Appendix F Golden CommPass
Unable to create window to read messages. Try shutting down an application
or two to free up memory.
OS/2 was unable to create the window to display messages. This
message typically occurs on a heavily stressed system that already
has too many windows open. Closing another application may help
reduce the over utilization so that you can continue running Golden
CommPass.

CommPass: Actual time=xx:xx
The online session has been terminated. According to the Golden
CommPass timer, your online session was active for the specified
period of time.
CommPass: x characters transmitted ... y cps
When the online session is terminated, Golden CommPass reports the
total number of characters transmitted and received, and calculates
the average data transfer rate in characters per second (cps).
Golden CommPass Appendix F ∙ 119
CommPass: Carrier detected before connect; disabling CD check!
While Golden CommPass was initializing the modem, the OS/2
communications device driver reported that carrier was active before
Golden CommPass dialed the telephone. Under these conditions, Golden
CommPass cannot reliably depend on the device driver information on
the state of carrier, so it will disable it's normal check of the
carrier state.
CommPass: ^C Sent
Golden CommPass will send this message to indicate that it has
requested the local node to establish a connection with the
CompuServe Information Service.
CommPass: CD signal still preset. May still be connected!
It appears that Golden CommPass has disconnected from CompuServe.
The modem reset string has been sent, but the OS/2 device driver is
still reporting that carrier is active. You may still be connected
to the local CompuServe node.
CommPass: Check DTR setting (&D2) and reset string.
Golden CommPass has disconnected from CompuServe, but your modem
never dropped the carrier signal. If your modem supports the &D2 or
&D3 command, you should add one of them to your modem reset string.
CommPass: Closed capture file.
CommPass: CommPortErrors = x
This message is issued during the communications window termination.
It contains a total count of the communications port errors that were
detected during the session.
CommPass: CommRead Error=x. RC=y.
An error occurred while trying to read data from the communications
device.
CommPass: DosClose COMx: x
The communications adapter has been closed. x represents the return
code from DosClose. It should be 0.
CommPass: DosOpen COMx: x
The communications adapter has been opened. x represents the return
code from DosClose. It should be 0.
CommPass: DosWrite string ERROR=x,y
Golden CommPass was unable to successfully send data to the
communications port.

FORUMNAME.ADP file.
CommPass: Invalid Download Cmd ...
An unrecognized command was found in the FORUMNAME.DOW file.
CommPass: Invalid Mark Message Cmd ...
An unrecognized command was found in the FORUMNAME.MRK file.
CommPass: Invalid Upload Cmd ...
An unrecognized command was found in the FORUMNAME.UPL file.
CommPass: << Loss of carrier detected >>
Golden CommPass has detected that the modem carrier signal has been
turned off. In most situations, this indicates that the telephone
connection has been disrupted. Golden CommPass will immediately
issue the modem reset command and terminate the online session.
CommPass: Opened capture file: filename
CommPass: Paused capture file.
CommPass: Redialing terminated by reaching maximum redial count.
CommPass: << Resetting modem >>
Golden CommPass has sent the reset string to the modem.
CommPass: Resumed capture file.
CommPass: Serial FIFO buffer ON
Golden CommPass has found a 16550 UART is available on this system
and the extended buffering provided by this UART is being used.
This message will not appear if the UART buffer has been disabled
with the MODE command, or if the UART does not support an extended
buffer.
Note: A UART supporting extended buffering is highly recommended for
9600 bps communications under OS/2.
CommPass: STALL! No modem activity.
There has been no modem activity (i.e., no characters received and no
characters transmitted) for the last 15-30 seconds.
Golden CommPass should be at a Forum! prompt, and will issue this
warning message to indicate that it is attempting to resume the
session by issuing a carriage return.
Golden CommPass Appendix F ∙ 121
CommPass: TIMEOUT string Cmd=x,Sub=y
The Golden CommPass script was waiting for CompuServe to return
string, but it has not been received within the specified period of
time.
Generally speaking, this is an abnormal situation that Golden
CommPass was not expecting. However, we are often able to recover
from a timeout situation.
If this is a recurring problem, please document it and send a copy of
the ONLINE.LOG file to technical support.
CommPass: TIMEOUT! No modem activity.
There has been no modem activity (i.e., no characters received and no
characters transmitted) for the last 2-3 minutes.
Golden CommPass will abort the online session.
Do you want to close Golden CommPass Communications?
YES NO CANCEL
Do you want to hang up the phone?
YES NO CANCEL
Pausing x seconds. Press F3 to close window.
The Golden CommPass communications session has ended. The
communications window will be closed in the number of seconds
indicated.
Note: You can change the time delay for closing the window by
changing the redial time delay on the Options/Online defaults dialog
box.
The online session was not started. There is nothing to do!
Although you have requested an online session, Golden CommPass is
unable to complete your request because it is unable to find any
messages, files or other navigation commands to send to CompuServe.
CANCEL
Unable to open communications adapter: COMx, RC=x.
Golden CommPass is unable to open the communications adapter. The
comm port is identified, as is the return code from the open call.
This message is most likely to be received when the OS/2
communications device driver (COM.SYS) is not installed, or when
another communications program is using the comm port. If another
program is using the port, the return code should be 32 - Sharing
Violation.
ABORT RETRY IGNORE
122 ∙ Appendix F Golden CommPass
Unable to open file filename, rc=x
Unable to open input file filename, rc=x
Unable to write to file handle x. Disk may be full.
Golden CommPass is unable to write to one of the output files. The
communications engine will continue to run (if at all possible), but
eventually, you need to reply to this message or Golden CommPass will
abort the online session.
ABORT RETRY IGNORE
Unable to open ONLINE.LOG, rc=x. Continuing without LOG file.
Golden CommPass was unable to open the LOG file. If you respond OK,
then Golden CommPass will continue without the online log. However,
if you reply CANCEL, Golden CommPass will immediately abort the
online session.
