Bak21
A Presentation Manager Utility

ver. 1.01 ( 32 bit )
WHAT IS Bak21?
Bak21 is a Q. D. C. floppy disk back up program. Q. D. C. means quick, dirty,
and cheap! Bak21 is a 32 bit Presentation Manager program that requires either
PKZIP/PKUNZIP (for DOS or OS/2) or ZIP/UNZIP (for OS/2). It was primarily
made to quickly back up WHOLE DIRECTORIES and/or directory trees to floppy disks.
You CAN NOT choose individual files to back up. Only whole directories. It is NOT,
I repeat, NOT a comprehensive do it all program. It is made for the user who
wants to back up programs and/or directories to floppy disks and doesn't want to
spend time having to read .DOC files or .INF files to remember how to do it every
time they open up the program. It has a limited number of features to reduce
confusion and learning curves. It is not for the 'ultimate power user'. If you are a
"Super Power User" there are many other shareware and commercial products that
are available. If you just want to get the job done and not waste time, then Bak21
may be for you!
Bak21 REQUIREMENTS
Bak21 requires OS/2 2.0 or higher. It also requires having at least one of the
following sets of ZIP file archivers :
PKZIP / PKUNZIP ver. 2.04 for DOS
PKZIP / PKUNZIP ver. 1.01 for OS/2
ZIP ver. 2.01 / UNZIP ver. 5.1 for OS/2
If you have any or all of these files they MUST be on your PATH statement. Check
the file CONFIG.SYS to assure that the directory they reside in is included in the
path statement. Earlier versions of these programs MAY NOT work correctly!
INSTALLING Bak21
Bak21 can be installed by simply copying the file BAK21.EXE to the directory
where you want to keep it and migrating it to the Desktop. This can be done in
the normal OS/2 fashion using templates or the migration utility. After that, it is
just a matter of double clicking on the Bak21 icon to activate the program.
SETTING UP Bak21
The only real set up to perform is to decide which archiver to use. This can be
accomplished by selecting Options on the menu bar, and then selecting Mode. Then
select which ZIP archiver you want to use. PKZIP/PKUNZIP for DOS is the de-
fault choice. You may change your choice any time you choose, except when you
are actually running the archiver.
USING Bak21
Bak21 has four (4) push-button, 3 check boxes, a Drive box, a Directory box, a
file box, and a destination Drive box. The main Drive, Directory, and File boxes
are used to navigate the file system to either select a zip file to restore or choose
a directory to back up. The other controls are used in the following manner :
Back Up : This button is clicked on after you have chosen a directory to back
up. You must double click into the directory you want to zip up be-
for activating this control. Individual files cannot be included or ex-
cluded. Bak21 backs up all the files in a directory. No picking or
choosing.
Restore : This button is chosen after you highlight a .ZIP file to restore. If the
zip file was created with the directories stored in it then the file
will be restored in the original directories. If the directories were
not stored in the .ZIP file or you are not sure, it me better to use the
UNZIP+ button below. Otherwise, the program will extract the files
to the root of the directory that is chosen in the Zip File Destination
box.
Unzip+ : This button is used when you want to restore a file that does not
have the directory structure stored in it. It will create a directory of
the same name as the file ( minus the .ZIP ) and extract all the files
in the selected .ZIP file into that directory.
Zip File Destination : This drop down combo box is used to select which disk
drive you want to Restore or Unzip+ a file to.
Don't Span Disks : This check box only works with PKZIP 2.04 for DOS. It only
applys when you use the Back Up button. If this box IS check-
ed then PKZIP will NOT span disks. If this box IS NOT checked
then PKZIP WILL prompt you for additional disks if the zip file
is large enough to require it. PKZIP ver. 2.04 is the only
archiver of the three used in this program that supports spanning
disks. Disk spanning is on by default while using PKZIP ver.
2.04 in this program.
Non Recursive : If this check box is checked the program will only back up the
directory you are double clicked into. It will NOT back up any
directories beneath or above it and it will NOT save the dir-
ectory path names. If it is NOT checked, the default, then
Bak21 will save the directory and any other directories below
it and retain the directory path names.
Prompt : This check box has two slightly different purposes depending on
whether you UNZIP+ or Back Up. It has no effect when using Restore.
If it is checked when you press Back Up it will prompt you for a
path to send the .ZIP file to. If it is checked when you press UNZIP+
then it will prompt you for a path to unzip ( the .ZIP file you select-
ed ) to. If the path doesn't exist Bak21 will create it.
EXAMPLES for Bak21
Here are several examples of how to use Bak21. They are much more informat-
ive than dry explanations of features.
Example 1 : You have the TE2 terminal program on you hard drive located in
C:\TE2. It has several sub-directories below it. To back up the
whole program to a floppy disk, first make sure that you have
chosen an archiver and have it on your Path statement. Then,
activate the program and click on Options on the menu bar. Then
select Mode and select you archiver. Then, navigate to drive C
using the Drive box and then using the Directory box double click
into the TE2 directory. Next use the Zip File Destination drop
down list to select drive A: ( or any you like ). Then press the
Back Up button. You'll be prompted to see if you are sure. Press
the O.K. button. Shortly after that, Bak21 will open a windowed
command-line session and you'll see your archiver doing it's job.
When it is done, Bak21 will notify you. Double click on the
system menu in the upper left corner of the command-line session
box and you are done.
Example 2 : You want to restore your copy of TE2 because you accidentally
screwed up the program on the hard disk. Stick the diskette with
TE2.ZIP in A drive ( or whichever you prefer ) and highlight the
file. Set the Zip File Destination box to the drive you want to
restore TE2 to, then press the Restore button. Again, Bak21 will
open a windowed command-line session and your archiver will
do it's work. Close the window when it is finished.
Example 3 : You just downloaded a hot new program from the BBS and you
want to check it out. The program is NEWPROG.ZIP. Navigate to
the directory where it is located and highlight the file. DON'T
press RESTORE! Why? Because most BBS's don't save the dir-
ectory paths when they zip up files. If you press Restore, Bak21
will dump the files on the root directory, which is probably not
where you want it. Instead, PRESS UNZIP+. UNZIP+ will create
a sub-directory with the same name as your file ( minus the .ZIP )
and extract the files to that sub-directory. In this particular case
Bak21 would create the directory C:\NEWPROG ( assuming that the
Zip File Destination choice is drive C ) and unzip all the files to
it. You could also check the Prompt box before you use UNZIP+.
This would let you extract the files to any path you type in. If it
doesn't exist Bak21 will create it. So, for example, if you typed
in C:\GAMES\NEW then Bak21 would extract all the files to that
directory.
NOTES ON Bak21
Well, that's about it! Bak21 is a somewhat nonstandard program. However, it
may be what some of you are looking for. Frankly, I'm tired of monolithic, feat-
ure bloated programs that I have to relearn every time I use them. For a word
processor or a compiler that I use every day - that is O.K. But, for a utility that I
may use somewhat sporadically, I find it exasperating. I may be persuaded to add
a few features, in the future, if there is enough interest in the program but please
don't ask me to make another dinosaur.
REGISTRATION for Bak21
Bak21 is not free. It is shareware. If you like it, please register. You'll be
able to get rid of the opening shareware beg screen and you'll sleep better at nights.
If you register, you can download any future updates for no additional cost. Regis-
tration fee is $15.00 and can be sent to the address below. Thank you!
