  6.      LAS VEGAS, Oct. 21 . . . IBM today announced two offerings of OS/2*
  7.      LAN Server 2.0, providing major advances in helping customers build,
  8.      administer and adapt their local area networks to suit their business
  9.      needs.

  11.      The new server products offer significantly improved performance,
  12.      enhanced security and fault tolerance for running mission-critical
  13.      applications at the desktop, more flexible support for different types
  14.      of local area networks, and a rich set of new functions to help the
  15.      LAN administrator with a new, tiered pricing model.
  16.  
  17.      The new server also offers customers a choice between both an entry
  18.      and an advanced package.  And OS/2 LAN Server now comes as an inte-
  19.      grated solution that includes all server functions, requesters and
  20.      necessary LAN transport facilities.  LAN Server 2.0 can provide base
  21.      OS/2 client support for roughly a third the cost of LAN Server 1.3.

  23.      "OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 makes workgroup networks and enterprise LANs
  24.      extremely productive environments," said Art Olbert, Personal Systems
  25.      director of LAN Systems.  "IBM will grow LAN Server with our LAN
  26.      systems strategy, keeping pace with our customers' rapidly expanding
  27.      demands."

  29.                          ADVANCED PACKAGE/ENTRY PACKAGE

  31.      The Advanced Package of OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 provides dramatic perform-
  32.      ance improvements through the enhanced High Performance File System
  33.      (HPFS), which exploits the power of 386SX** and higher processors.
  34.      End users can expect to see a response time up to twice as fast as
  35.      that available on OS/2 LAN Server 1.3 when they access files through
  36.      the new high-performance server.

  38.      The Advanced Package also provides significant fault-tolerance
  39.      protection, so customers can use their departmental networks with
  40.      greater confidence that their information is protected.  This
  41.      protection is achieved through disk mirroring and disk duplexing.

  43.      The Entry Package of OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 is an excellent choice for
  44.      customers seeking significant cost advantages in building departmental
  45.      or small business local area networks.

  47.      Both Server 2.0 products support OS/2 (1.3 and 2.0), DOS and
  48.      Windows*** clients, as well as supporting Token-Ring, Ethernet and PC
  49.      Network LANs. Either package can be run with or without Extended
  50.      Services.

  52.      In response to the need for flexibility and openness in building
  53.      customer networks, LAN Server 2.0 can also run on the :hardware of
  54.      selected manufacturers and a broad range of other vendor hardware
  55.      products.

  57.      Both server packages also offer many other new advantages:

  59.           -- Customers won't have to wait to integrate many new
  60.              adapter technologies with their server software because
  61.              of OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 support for the Network Device
  62.              Interface Specification (NDIS).  Now LAN Server can
  63.              support the wide array of NDIS-compliant LAN adapters
  64.              available or under development in the industry today.

  66.           -- For businesses that require sharing of unique resources,
  67.              such as accounting information, a single server can link
  68.              up to four departmental LANs, and a single client can
  69.              participate in up to four LANs, by using four adapter
  70.              cards.

  72.           -- Faster access to files and printers across the local area
  73.              network is achieved for both server packages through
  74.              improved support for LAN adapters and faster local area
  75.              network protocols.

  77.           -- Uninterruptible power supply support helps prevent
  78.              workstations running OS/2 LAN Server from crashing due
  79.              to power interruptions.

  82.              Presentation Manager, help users and administrators

  86.                           NEW MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES

  88.      As businesses are more dependent on local area networks, the need to
  89.      manage LANs effectively becomes increasingly important.  OS/2 LAN
  90.      Server 2.0 offers a number of features to help LAN administrators and
  91.      users work more effectively.  Examples include:

  93.           -- Enhanced support for OS/2 and DOS medialess PCs. This is
  94.              important for customers who want improved levels of
  95.              security and reduced cost.

  97.           -- Improved problem management -- such as notifying network
  98.              administrators of printer and disk storage problems.

  100.      OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 Advanced Package costs $2,295.00 with a $75.00 per
  101.      client cost.  While it supports all the new OS/2 2.0 functions as
  102.      clients, it requires OS/2 1.3 Standard Edition as base software for
  103.      the server machine.

  105.      OS/2 LAN Server 2.0 Entry Package costs $795.00 with a $75.00 per
  106.      client fee.  This product may use OS/2 SE 1.3, or OS/2 2.0 as its base
  107.      operating system software.

  109.      For the single fee of $75.00, a client workstation can be any or all
  110.      of the following: an OS/2 2.0, or OS/2 1.3 client; a DOS 3.3 or above
  111.      client; a DOS Windows 3.0 client.  Both packages will be available in
  112.      April of 1992.
