  1.                      IBM INTRODUCES OS/2 EXTENDED SERVICES

  3.      LAS VEGAS, October 21, 1991 . . . IBM today announced Extended
  4.      Services for OS/2* and Extended Services with Database Server for
  5.      OS/2.  These products expand user alternatives for implementing a wide
  6.      variety of business applications across IBM and other selected hard-
  7.      ware vendor platforms.  Also announced was Distributed Database
  8.      Connections Services/2 (DDCS/2), a new product for connecting work-
  9.      station databases to host databases.

  11.      The Extended Services products contain enhancements to the Database
  12.      Manager and Communications Manager components which were previously
  13.      available in OS/2 Extended Edition 1.3 and run on either OS/2 2.0 or
  14.      OS/2 Standard Edition 1.3.

  16.      Communications Manager's new functions include integrated Peer-to-Peer
  17.      Networking (APPN) support for both End- and Network-nodes, enhanced,
  18.      host-based NetView administration of remote servers and workstations,
  19.      and allows many of the Token-Ring LAN functions to run on installed
  20.      coaxial cabling.  Additional new functions include the SAA programming
  21.      interface for communications (CPIC) and support for the Network Device
  22.      Interface Specification (NDIS), a de-facto standard for attaching
  23.      network interface cards.

  25.      Important new Database Manager functions include the addition of
  26.      forward recovery, database administration tools and state-of-the-art
  27.      problem management called First Failure Support Technology/2.  In
  28.      addition to the existing OS/2 and DOS database clients, Database
  29.      Manager also supports a new NETBIOS OS/2 client and a new Windows**
  30.      database client.

  32.      Extended Services for OS/2 is intended for use on a standalone work-
  33.      station.  Database Manager users can create databases on their own
  34.      workstation, as well as use their workstation to access a remote data-
  35.      base server on a host.

  37.      IBM Extended Services with Database Server for OS/2 includes the
  38.      features and functions of the standalone product as well as providing
  39.      the Database Server function for remote clients.  It also provides the
  40.      new Distributed Feature which allows DOS, Windows or OS/2 Database
  41.      clients to run on a LAN.  The Database client code has also been
  42.      rewritten to run faster and requires less memory.

  44.      Created to complement Extended Services, IBM SAA Distributed Database
  45.      Connections Services/2 (DDCS/2) is available in a single-user or a
  46.      network configuration. It allows Database Manager users (and supported
  47.      OS/2, DOS and Windows applications) to access host relational data-
  48.      bases conforming to the Distributed Relational Database Architecture
  49.      (DRDA).

  51.      In addition to appropriately configured PS/2* models, IBM will support
  52.      Extended Services on selected hardware vendor products.

  54.      Generally available in April 1992, the one-time license fee for
  55.      Extended Services for OS/2 is $595 and Extended Services with Database
  56.      Server for OS/2 is $1,995.  The Distributed Feature that provides
  57.      Database Client Application Enablers is $75 per client workstation.
  58.      The DDCS/2 single user license is $500; $4,680 for a multi-user.
