First Steps with GEMAR
To perform a first Backup with GEMAR, you have to do a few steps only:
INSTALLATION
-create a folder named GEMAR on your Harddrive
-copy the files GEMAR.APP and GEMAR.RSC, GEMAR.STR and GEMAR.HLP from
folder ENGLISH into this folder
-if there is a parameter-file in folder PAR, taht can be used for your
Streamer you should copy the file to your GEMAR-folder and rename it to
GEMAR.PAR
PROGRAM ADJUSTMENTS
Execute GEMAR.APP by a double-click.
In the main-menu of GEMAR choose item 'Streamer...' under 'Options'
You must choose the right ID, where your Streamer is connected to.
For this step, you have to click for the button with the current streamer
address in the lower part of the dialog.
You will enter the dialog for choosing the ID.
There are four kinds of SCSI-Hostadaptors you can choose from:
-DMA : every DMA to SCSI adaptor connected to the DMA-Port of your
Atari.
-Alia : the DMA-SCSI-adaptor from c't.
-TT : SCSI-Port of the TT
-Faclon : SCSI-Port of the Falcon030
Please notice that some capabilities of GEMAR can only be used with ALIA,
TT-SCSI or Falcon-SCSI.
Further information is given in the GEMAR-manual.
After choosing your Streamer-target you leave the dialog for selecting
address and the dialog for selecting the streamers parameters with 'OK'.
To get these selections on every start of GEMAR you will have to save the
Parameters by selecting 'Parameters Save...' under 'File' in the main-menu.
Now you have to put a Cartridge to your streamer and select 'Load Tape'
under 'Streamer'.
If everything is correct, the streamer's Icon on the Desktop will be
selectable.
By the words: the desktop-icons will be sometimes selectable and sometimes
unselectable due to the situation, GEMAR is in.
Pleses refer to the manual to get further Information.
THE FIRST BACKUP
To perform a little Test we'll save a few files from harddisk.
To do this, you click one of the drive icons with a double click.
After reading the directory tree of this drive, you can select some files
and folders from.
After selecting some files, choose 'Files Backup...' in the main-menus
'Backup'.
The following Dialog is used to choose the kind of Backup to be performed.
Because of the list of files you have already selected, you can only do a
backup of the 'Marked Files'.
There is a switch, you can use to append the backup to a tape already
used to store more than one backup on one tape.
To overwrite the tape, the switch has to be off. Do this, because we are
using a new tape at this moment.
Coose 'Backup' and the Backup will be done.
That's the simple way to do Backups of Harddisks!
THE FIRST RESTORE
As the next step, we'll restore data from the tape back to your harddisk:
At the first step you'll rewind the tape by selecting 'Position...' under
'Streamer'.
You will enter a dialog, where you select 'Rewind' and finish the dialog
by 'Done'.
Now the streamer's indes can be read by double-clicking the streamer's
icon on the desk.
After a while a window will be opened, where the files can be seen which
are written to the tape.
As before on doing a backup, you can select files for restore.
After selecting some files you select 'Files Restore...' under 'Backup' in
the main menu.
For the differwence between the item 'Restore' in the windows and the main
menu, please refer to the manual or the help pages of GEMAR.
A dialog will be opened, where you can choose to restore the files to the
original paths, as loacated on restore, or to choose another path.
For this tests, we'll write the files to another path, so select
'Destination-Path' and click 'Start'
After selecting 'Start' you will be asked for the destination path with a
file selector box. After selecting the path (the selected file is not
important) the files will be restored to this path.
THE FIRST FULL BACKUP
But for the first use of GEMAR you should perform a full backup of your
Harddisk.
If you have an index of your harddisk in memory (seen on the drive icons
in selected state), you have to clean the index by selecting 'Index Erase'
in the main-menu's 'Edit'.
Then choose 'Files Backup..' and switch off 'Append to end of tape'.
Select 'Start' and all files of your Harddisk will be backed up.
These are the first steps with GEMAR.
For further information read the help-pages (simply press HELP) and the
manual.
