  8. This file contains the following information:
  9.     1) CD-ROM / Video Performance Problems
  10.     2) Video Display Problems
  11.     3) Audio Problems
  12.     4) "Out of Memory" Problems

  17. 1) CD-ROM / Video Performance Problems
  18. ================================================

  20. NOTE: To avoid damage to the CD-ROM, do not remove it from
  21. your CD-ROM drive while it is in use (usually indicated by
  22. a light on the CD-ROM drive).
  23.  
  24. You might be able to enhance video playback performance in 
  25. a number of ways:
  26.  
  27. 1.  Increase the amount of buffer memory that your CD-ROM 
  28. driver software uses.  Most computers communicate with the 
  29. CD-ROM drive through the Microsoft MSCDEX driver.  Such 
  30. systems can sometimes be accelerated by adding /M:32 to the 
  31. MSCDEX entry in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  See your CD-ROM 
  32. documentation for more details.

  34. 2.  Ensure that you are using the latest video driver for your 
  35. video board.  Contact your video board manufacturer for more 
  36. information.  You might also be able to get updated drivers from 
  37. CompuServe in either the Microsoft forum or in a forum managed 
  38. by your video board manufacturer.  Also see the \DRIVERS 
  39. directory on this CD-ROM for a number of Microsoft-provided 
  40. video drivers.

  42. 3.  Check Windows Setup (usually in the Main group of the 
  43. Windows Program Manager) to ensure that you are using a 256 
  44. color video driver.  Video playback is slower in both 16 color
  45. mode and any video mode with more than 256 colors.  Video 
  46. performance might also be improved by running Windows 
  47. in 640 by 480 resolution if you are currently using a higher 
  48. resolution.

  50. 4.  If your computer has only 4 Megabytes of memory, you 
  51. should consider purchasing an additional 4 Megabytes for a 
  52. total of 8 Megabytes.  Additional memory will significantly 
  53. increase performance for all applications on your system.

  56. 2) Video Display Problems
  57. ================================================
  58.  
  59. 1.  16 color mode
  60. This application runs in 16 color mode but, due to the full-motion
  61. video playback, we strongly suggest using a 256 color video mode.
  62. Many computers are factory-set to a 16 color mode although the 
  63. video board is capable of 256 colors.  The setup program should 
  64. correctly warn you if you are in 16 color mode and suggest 
  65. a remedy.

  67. 2.  ATI video boards
  68. This product is incompatible with some features of the ATI
  69. Mach32 video system.  This video board comes with a number of
  70. popular systems including most Gateway 2000 machines.  The 
  71. problem is not with the board itself but with the Mach32 video 
  72. driver software so it can be resolved in at least two different
  73. ways (note that suggestion "A" will provide the best performance):
  74.  
  75. A.  Run the ATI Control Panel application that comes with your
  76. video board.
  77.          i.  Ensure that you are running in the 256 color mode. 
  78.         ii.  Click Advanced Features and ensure that the 256 
  79.              Color Palette option is turned ON and Device  
  80.              Bitmaps are OFF.  See the ATI documentation 
  81.              for more details.

  83. B.  From the Windows Setup application, choose a different video 
  84. driver such as the 8514/a driver.  See your ATI documentation 
  85. for more details.

  88. 3) Audio Problems
  89. ================================================
  90.  
  91. This application requires that an MPC-compatible sound board 
  92. is installed in order to play sound.  It will not function with
  93. software that uses the computer's internal speaker to generate 
  94. sound (such as "PC Speaker").  Such software will usually
  95. not play any sounds but could cause your system to crash.
  96.  
  97. To resolve other audio problems:
  98.  
  99. 1.  Make sure that the volume for your speakers is set to an 
  100. audible level.
  101.  
  102. 2.  Your sound board may be set up incorrectly if you still do not 
  103. hear any audio.  Check to see that the audio driver that came
  104. with your sound board is installed correctly and, if necessary, 
  105. reinstall it.  See the documentation that came with your sound
  106. board for more details.

  109. ================================================
  110. 4) "Out of Memory" Problems
  111. ================================================
  112.  
  113. This application uses your computer's memory to display 
  114. pictures and video.  Performance will be degraded if your system
  115. does not have enough free memory.  If you receive Out-Of-Memory 
  116. errors, you probably do not have enough free memory. Consider 
  117. doing the following:
  118.  
  119. 1.  Close all unnecessary applications.
  120.  
  121. 2.  If you are running Windows in Enhanced mode (the default 
  122. mode if you are running Windows on a 386 or better machine), 
  123. create a permanent swap file on your hard disk.  See your 
  124. Windows documentation details.

  128. 5) Windows NT
  129. ================================================

  131. Microsoft Windows NT is incompatible with the Microsoft Video
  132. for Windows drivers that this product uses.  You will need to
  133. run this product with a Windows 3.x system.
