  27. Description of Working Group:

  29. The SMTP Extensions Working Group is chartered to develop extensions to the
  30. base SMTP protocol (RFC821) to facilitate the more efficient transmission of 8
  31. bit text and binary data.  Among the extensions to be considered to SMTP are the
  32. elimination of the ASCII text character restriction and line length restriction
  33. to allow the sending of arbitrary 8 bit character sets, and the definition of
  34. mechanisms to facilitate binary transmission, and extensions to the
  35. negotiation sequence to facilitate batch transmission.

  38.  Goals and Milestones:

  40.      Done       Review the Charter of the Group.  Determine if changes to SMTP 
  41.                 are necessary. Discuss the needs for backward compatability, 
  42.                 and interoperability.  This discussion will be held by email.

  44.      Done       Discuss the issues involved with binary transmission. Determine
  45.                 whether a ``binary'' mode should be pursued, and whether the 
  46.                 SMTP line length restriction should be eliminated.

  48.      Done       Discuss the elimination of the 7 bit restrictions in SMTP, and 
  49.                 the implications of removing this restriction in terms of 
  50.                 interoperation.

  52.      Done       Write a document specifying the changes to SMTP agreed to by 
  53.                 the Group. Post as an Internet-Draft.

  55.      Done       Review and finalize the SMTP Extensions document.
