  27. The DNS Incremental Transfer, Notification, and Dynamic Update Working
  28. Group is concerned with three areas of future DNS protocol
  29. development:
  30.  
  31.  1. Incremental Zone Transfer - As the sizes of some zone files have 
  32. grown
  33.     quite large, it is believed that a protocol addition to allow the
  34.     transfer of only the changed subset of a zone will reduce net 
  35. traffic
  36.     and the load on critical servers.
  37.  
  38.  2. Change Notification - There can be large time intervals during which
  39.     at least one secondary has data that is inconsistent with the 
  40. primary.
  41.     The proposed ``notify'' mechanism (where the primary sends a message
  42.     to known secondaries) facilitates fast convergence of servers
  43.     vis-a-vis consistency of data in the zones.
  44.  
  45.  3. Dynamic Update - The need to frequently update small portions of a
  46.     large zone and to have those updates propagate is perceived.
  47.
