  9. The DNS WG met at PSC on thursday, and worked on three issues:
  10.  
  11.   1. Future deployment of root name servers.
  12.      Several parties believe that a better allocation of root servers is
  13.      possible.  A review of the current set suggests that while it is
  14.      not time for a change yet, the end of the ARPANET suggests that
  15.      more emphasis should be placed on locating root servers close to
  16.      NSSes.
  17.      In addition, political and technical sentiment for root name
  18.      servers in Europe (and probably the Pacific as well) is growing.
  19.      This could lead to unfortunate technical results since root servers
  20.      see a lot of traffic and current algorithms could easily load
  21.      proposed "fat pipes" to Europe.  The political results could be
  22.      unfortunate if root servers were deployed unwisely in Europe.
  23.      The issues here are complicated.  Paul Mockapetris promised to
  24.      write a white paper on the subject.
  25.   2. Domain debugging tools.
  26.      A new tool, called DOC, was described.  DOC examines database
  27.      associated with a particular zone and checks to see if it is set up
  28.      correctly.  This involves a lot of use of DIG and some grinding on
  29.      the results.
  30.      A test group for the new DOC and DIG tools was formed, with a
  31.      mailing list at DANDY@ISI.EDU. The tools will be released to the
  32.      general public after a beta test period.
  33.   3. New chair.
  34.      Paul Mockapetris resigned as chair because of new duties.  Phil
  35.      Almquist (Almquist@jessica.stanford.edu) agreed to take over.
