  10. Network Element Benchmarking

  12. The first item of discussion was the status of the Internet-Draft on
  13. Network Element benchmarking, draft-bmwg-methodology-00.txt.  Since this
  14. draft is relatively mature, there was not a lot of discussion.  The
  15. group agreed to move forward towards seeing this issued as an
  16. Informational RFC. There will be a final call on the list shortly.

  18. Two points were raised, however, with reference to the methodologies
  19. described in this draft.  In both cases it was agreed that another
  20. document should be generated which references the present draft, rather
  21. than hold up the present draft and expand it.

  23. The first point concerns test of devices which switch, with a focus on
  24. call setup overhead in a true switched environment.  The discussion
  25. raised questions about whether this is management overhead or analogous
  26. to routing.  Kevin Dubray volunteered to offer a draft about testing
  27. issues in this area.

  29. The second point concerned testing of congestion and congestion behavior
  30. in a network switch.  The group felt that many of the issues were
  31. covered, at least in a general way, in the present draft.  However,
  32. there are some particular cases of many to one which merit further
  33. attention.  Merike Kaeo volunteered to draft a document about testing
  34. issues in this area.

  38. Benchmarking Methodologies for Overall Network Performance

  40. Jim McQuaid spent a few minutes giving an overview of the second
  41. Internet-Draft recently posted, draft-bmwg-overallperf-00.txt,
  42. describing methods for gross delay testing in a working network using
  43. time synchronization.  One concept put forward was the idea of using
  44. unsynchronized send and receive processes to measure the variance of
  45. delay, e.g., by strobing out a test packet every two seconds.  Another
  46. discussion point centered on ``instrumented traceroute'' e.g., isolating
  47. each hop in the cloud for potential discrete delay measurement.  After
  48. some discussion and comment on the possible issues and value of such
  49. testing generally, Jim agreed to continue this discussion on the list
  50. with the goal of forwarding an edited draft at the next IETF.

  56. Rick Jones then presented a fairly extensive set of thoughts on the
  57. subject of benchmarking for end systems.  His slides follow these
  58. minutes.

  63. Some issues around testing routing convergence were raised and
  64. discussed, but no further action is to be taken at this time.
