  26. Description of Working Group:

  28. The major goal of the Benchmarking Methodology Working Group is to make
  29. a series of recommendations concerning the measurement of the
  30. performance characteristics of various internetworking technologies;
  31. further, these recommendations may focus on the systems or services
  32. that are built from these technologies.
  33.  
  34. Each recommendation will describe the class of equipment, system, or
  35. service being addressed; discuss the performance characteristics that
  36. are pertinent to that class; clearly identify a set of metrics that aid
  37. in the description of those characteristics; specify the methodologies
  38. required to collect said metrics; and lastly, present the requirements
  39. for the common, unambiguous reporting of benchmarking results.

  41. Because the demands of a class may vary from deployment to deployment,
  42. this Working Group will not attempt to define acceptance criteria or
  43. performance requirements.
  44.  
  45. Currently, there are two distinct efforts underway in the BMWG. The
  46. first addresses the metrics and methodologies associated with
  47. benchmarking network interconnect devices. The second effort (IPPM)
  48. focuses on determining the practical benchmarks and procedures needed
  49. in gaining insight for users and providers of IP Internet services.
  50.  
  51. An ongoing task is to provide a forum for the discussion and the
  52. advancement of measurements designed to provide insight on the
  53. operation internetworking technologies.
  54.  
  55.  Goals and Milestones: 
  56.  
  57.      Done       Expand the current Ethernet switch benchmarking methodology 
  58.                 draft to define the metrics and methodologies particular to the
  59.                 general class of connectionless, LAN switches.                 
  60.  
  61.    Aug 97       Edit the LAN switch draft to reflect the input from BMWG. Issue
  62.                 a new version of document for comment.  If appropriate, 
  63.                 ascertain consensus on whether to recommend the draft for 
  64.                 consideration as an RFC.                                       
  65.  
  66.    Aug 97       Take controversial components of multicast draft to mailing 
  67.                 list for discussion.  Incorporate changes to draft and reissue 
  68.                 appropriately.                                                 
  69.  
  70.    Aug 97       Incorporate BMWG input and continue to progress the Cell/Call 
  71.                 Terminology Draft. Reissue draft as appropriate.
