  6. Minutes of the Authenticated Firewall Traversal Working Group (AFT)
  7.  
  8. The AFT Working Group meeting was held on Tuesday, 18 July.  There were
  9. about 50 attendees---less than in Danvers, but Stockholm attendance in
  10. general was less than Danvers.
  11.  
  12. The issues brought to the table were:

  15.    o Extending the METHOD negotiation model to include exchange of
  16.      arbitrary octet strings as METHOD descriptors.  There was general
  17.      consensus at the meeting that staying with the current model is a
  18.      good thing (that is, no one objected).  The chair's position is
  19.      that ``better is the enemy of good enough.''
  20.  
  21.    o Feedback from implementors on UDP DESTROY has indicated that it is
  22.      not a terribly useful construct.  There was general consensus that
  23.      removing UDP DESTROY was a good thing.  The new proposed model is
  24.      that the connection that the UDP ASSOCIATE arrives on defines the
  25.      lifetime of the UDP association it creates.
  26.  
  27.    o It is expected that interopability testing may commence soon,
  28.      perhaps as early as mid August, it appeared that three independent
  29.      implementations are already in progress, with the BNR-based one
  30.      being the basis for the ICL/SESAME implementation.  Volunteers are
  31.      needed to step up to the plate.

  33.    o IMAP was brought up as a possible framework for plugging SOCKS
  34.      into.  The chair (having reviewed the IMAP documents) feels that it
  35.      belongs underneath SOCKS as a METHOD, rather than as something that
  36.      SOCKS gets buried in.

  39. The chair generally feels that (modulo some clarifications, and
  40. incorporation of the technicals discussed in Stockholm) the document is
  41. close to being ready to go through Last Calls and ``Proposed.''  The
  42. chair expects to issue a new Internet-Draft on the base protocol by
  43. 28 July.
