  11. PURPOSE

  13.    The purpose of this BOF is to assess interest in creating a working
  14.    group to define a standard virtual router redundancy protocol for IPv4
  15.    and IPv6.
  16.  
  17. BACKGROUND
  18.  
  19.    A virtual router redundancy protocol is a protocol which allows
  20.    several routers on a multi-access link to utilize the same virtual IP
  21.    address.  One router will be elected as a master with the other
  22.    routers acting as backups in case of the failure of the master router.
  23.    The primary motivation to using a virtual router redundancy protocol
  24.    is that host systems may be configured (manually or via DHCP) with a
  25.    single default gateway, rather than running an active routing
  26.    protocol.
