Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol BOF (vrrp) Monday, April 7 at 1530-1730 ============================ CHAIRS: Bob Hinden / Ipsilon Networks Peter Kline / AGIS PURPOSE The purpose of this BOF is to assess interest in creating a working group to define a standard virtual router redundancy protocol for IPv4 and IPv6. BACKGROUND A virtual router redundancy protocol is a protocol which allows several routers on a multi-access link to utilize the same virtual IP address. One router will be elected as a master with the other routers acting as backups in case of the failure of the master router. The primary motivation to using a virtual router redundancy protocol is that host systems may be configured (manually or via DHCP) with a single default gateway, rather than running an active routing protocol. AGENDA: 1. Introduction. 2. Requirements for a Virtual router redundancy protocol. 3. Review of current internet drafts of VRRP. 4. Discuss the need for a Standard. 5. Review of Draft Charter (including goals and schedule). 6. Assess consensus for creating VRRP working group. Current Internet Drafts S. Knight, D. Weaver, D. Whipple, R. Hinden, "Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol", , March 25, 1997. S. Knight, D. Weaver, D. Whipple, "Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol", , November 1996.
