  13. Meetings of four Operational Requirements Area working groups and three
  14. BOFs were held during the 30th IETF meeting in Toronto, Canada.

  18. Guidelines and Recommendations for Incident Processing BOF (GRIP)
  19.  
  20. The GRIP BOF met to discuss forming a working group which would produce
  21. guidelines and recommendations for use when dealing with security
  22. related incidents.  The scope was to produce recommendations suitable
  23. for use by response teams (RTs), Internet users and vendors of hardware
  24. and software products.  The participants of the BOF agreed that there
  25. was sufficient interest in the issues discussed to establish a working
  26. group.  The proposed co-chairs, Barbara Frasier (CERT) and Louis Mamakos
  27. (UUNET) are completing their draft charter and will be forwarding it for
  28. approval soon.

  32. Internet Accounting 2 BOF (ACCT2)
  33.  
  34. The BOF appears to have gone reasonably well and the prospective
  35. co-chairs, Nevil Brownlee and Cyndi Mills, are working on a charter
  36. after discussions with both Operational Requirements Area co-Directors.
  37. Assuming they get closure on the revised charter it will be forwarded
  38. for approval.

  42. Testing BOF (TESTING)
  43.  
  44. The US DoD is starting a conformance testing program to support
  45. procurement of IP technology networking hardware.  They are developing
  46. testing profiles, verification suites and testing tools.  At this BOF,
  47. Lee Chastain described their work developing the tester software and
  48. provided an (unofficial) overview of the conformance testing program.
  49. While it became evident that there is probably insufficient interest in
  50. a pure testing working group, there was considerable interest in
  51. tracking these efforts.  Further, the discussions made it clear that a
  52. major revision of the Router Requirements and Host Requirement documents
  53. was a mandatory exercise for the IETF.

  56. Benchmarking Methodolgy Working Group (BMWG)
  57.  
  58. Meeting was cancelled.

  61. CIDR Deployment Working Group (CIDRD)
  62.  
  63. Erik-Jan Bos and Tony Bates each presented statistics reflecting the
  64. progress of CIDR. The conclusion is that CIDR has been helping to reduce
  65. the growth of the global routing table.

  67. A number of open CIDR issues were discussed:  Why are some ASs still not
  68. playing?  What can be done to encourage them?  Is it worth aggregating
  69. ``old'' nets?  Should specific CIDR address allocation procedures be
  70. recommended?
  71.  
  72. The need to continue the working group was discussed and it was
  73. concluded that since there are still tasks that the group should be
  74. involved in, it should continue.

  77. Generic Internet Service Description Working Group (GISD)
  78.  
  79. The history of the GISD effort was reviewed and a proposed new charter
  80. was discussed.  David Sitman assumed the mantle of GISD Working Group
  81. Chair from Tony Bates.  A revised outline for the GISD document was
  82. proposed and discussed and a call for volunteers was issued.  The
  83. outline revision is intended to make it more likely that the working
  84. group can bring the document to closure in a timely fashion.

  87. Network Status Reports Working Group (NETSTAT)
  88.  
  89. Network status presentations were made by Scott Bradner (CoREN), Tim
  90. Seaver (NC-REN), Sue Hares (NSFNET transition), Guy Almes (ANS), and
  91. Eric Carroll (CA*NET).

  94. Operational Statistics Working Group (OPSTAT)
  95.  
  96. The Operational Statics Working Group made another pass over the draft
  97. document addressing concerns raised in mailing list discussions.  The
  98. general discussion touched on the status of existing draft
  99. implementations, whether the information format is for storage or just
  100. interchange (very thoughful discussion), and some revisions to make the
  101. specification more widely useful for network event recording as well as
  102. aggregated statistics.  The group appears to be making good progress.
