  2. On-Line IETF Information
  3.  
  4. The Internet Engineering Task Force maintains up-to-date, on-line
  5. information on all of its activities.  The following sub-sections
  6. contain:
  7.  
  8.  
  9.    o a description of the contents of several FTP directories;
  10.    o instructions on how to access the information via FTP, e-mail,
  11.      WorldWide Web;
  12.    o a description of the different formats of proceedings available;
  13.      and
  14.    o instructions on how to subscribe to the two IETF mailing lists.

  17. The IETF Directory (/ietf)
  18.  
  19. Below is a list of the files available in the IETF directory and a short
  20. synopsis of what each file contains.  Files prefixed with a 0 contain
  21. information about meetings, while files prefixed with a 1 contain
  22. general information about the IETF.
  23.  
  24.  
  25. 0tao.txt This file contains ``A Guide for New Attendees of the Internet
  26.      Engineering Task Force'' (RFC 1718).  People attending an IETF
  27.      meeting for the first time are encouraged to read this document so
  28.      they know what to expect at the meetings and how to participate in
  29.      them.
  30. 0mtg-agenda.txt The current agenda for the upcoming IETF meeting,
  31.      containing scheduled sessions for working groups, BOFs, and plenary
  32.      presentations.
  33. 0mtg-at-a-glance-yymm.txtA file containing logistics information for
  34.      individual IETF meetings, including the date and location, hotel
  35.      and airline arrangements, meeting site accommodations and meeting
  36.      costs.  Each ``at-a-glance'' file is distinguished by the year and
  37.      month of the meeting (e.g., 0mtg-at-a-glance-95apr.
  38.      txt for the April 1995 meeting).
  39. 0mtg-rsvp.txt The form used to notify the Secretariat of your plans to
  40.      attend the upcoming IETF meeting.
  41. 0mtg-sites.txt Dates and sites for IETF meetings.
  42. 0mtg-multicast-guide-yymmm.txtA schedule for sessions at an IETF
  43.      meeting whose audio video will be ``multicast'' over the Internet.
  44. 0mtg-traveldirections-yymmm.txtDirections on how to get to the meeting
  45.      hotel(s).
  46. 1directories.txt This file.
  47. 1iab.txt List of current IAB members.
  48. 1iesg.txt List of current IESG members.
  49. 1ietf-description.txtAn introduction to the IETF.
  50. 1nonwg-discuss.txt A short list of mailing lists that are not associated
  51.      with IETF working groups, but are relevant to the IETF.
  52. 1id-guidelines.txt Instructions for authors of Internet-Drafts.
  53. 1ietf-description.txtA short description of the IETF, the IESG and how
  54.      to participate.
  55. 1wg-summary.txt A listing of all current working groups, their acronyms,
  56.      chairs, mailing list, and any documents produced.
  57. 1wg-charters.txt A listing of all current working groups, their
  58.      descriptions, acronyms, chairs, mailing list, and any documents
  59.      produced.
  60. 1proceedings-request.txtAn order form for hard copies of IETF meeting
  61.      proceedings.
  62. 1rfc_index.txtAn RFC index.

  65. Working groups have individual directories under /ietf, named by their
  66. acronym, for charters and minutes (e.g., the /ietf/snmpv2 directory
  67. contains the charter and minutes for the SNMPv2 Working Group).
  68.  
  69. Area reports and Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) session minutes are grouped
  70. into directories by meeting.  The directory names are of the form yymmm
  71. (e.g., the /ietf/92mar directory contains the area summaries and BOF
  72. minutes for the March 1992 meeting).

  75. The Internet-Drafts Directory (/internet-drafts)
  76.  
  77. The Internet-Drafts directory contains draft documents that may
  78. eventually be submitted to the IESG and/or RFC Editor to be considered
  79. for publication as RFCs.  Internet-Drafts have no formal status at all,
  80. and should be considered fluid documents that may change or be deleted
  81. at any time.  They are indexed in the file 1id-abstracts.txt in the
  82. Internet-Drafts directory.  Comments on the documents should be
  83. addressed to the author whose e-mail address is listed in the document.

  86. 1id-abstracts.txt This file lists the current Internet-Drafts, their
  87.      titles, pathnames, authors, dates of publication, and abstracts.
  88. 1id-index.txt This file contains an abbreviated listing of
  89.      Internet-Drafts (the document title, filename, and posting date).

  91. For more information on writing and submitting an Internet-Draft, see
  92. the ``Guidelines to Authors of Internet-Drafts'' document
  93. (1id-guidelines.txt in the /ietf directory).

  96. The IESG Directory (/iesg)
  97.  
  98. The IESG directory contains the minutes of IESG meetings and regularly
  99. updated status reports on protocols in the standards track.
  100.

  102. 1protocol_actions.txt    This file contains a list of protocols currently
  103.                  under consideration by the IESG.
  104. 1old_standards.txt    This file contains a list of Proposed and Draft
  105.                Standards eligible for advancement.
  106.

  108. The minutes of IESG meetings are contained in files named with the
  109. pattern iesg.yy-mm-dd (e.g., the /iesg/iesg.92-11-10 file contains the
  110. minutes of the IESG meeting held on 10 November 1992).

  113. FTP Access
  114.  
  115. The IETF information described above is available by anonymous FTP from
  116. several sites.

  133. To retrieve this information, FTP to one of the above sites, log in with
  134. username anonymous and your e-mail address as the password.  When logged
  135. in, change to the desired directory (using the cd command), and retrieve
  136. the desired files (using the get command).

  139. E-mail Access

  141. Internet-Drafts, and other IETF material, are available by mail server
  142. from ds.internic.net.  To retrieve a file, mail a request to
  143. mailserv@ds.internic.net with a subject of anything you want.  In the
  144. body, put one or more commands of the form:

  167. IETF-related information is also available via the WorldWide Web.
  168. This service is constantly evolving over time, so a description 
  169. of their contents will not be given.

  175. Proceedings
  176.  
  177. For each IETF meeting, a set of proceedings is published that contains
  178. area reports, charters of active working groups, minutes from working
  179. group and BOF sessions, and material from plenary presentations.  The
  180. proceedings are published in both hard copy and on-line formats.
  181. On-site attendees are given the option of requesting a hard copy of the
  182. proceedings at no charge; other people may order a hard copy for a price
  183. of US$35 (see the file /ietf/1proceedings-request.txt).

  185. On-line proceedings are available to everyone via:

  192. Mailing Lists
  193.  
  194. Much of the daily work of the IETF is conducted on electronic mailing
  195. lists.  There are mailing lists for each of the working groups, as well
  196. as an IETF general discussion list and an IETF announcement list.  Mail
  197. on the working group mailing lists is expected to be technically
  198. relevant to the working groups supported by that list.

  200. The IETF announcement list is a moderated mailing list that receives
  201. the following types of messages:

  203.    o IETF meeting logistics,
  204.    o agendas for working group and BOF sessions at IETF meetings,
  205.    o working group actions,
  206.    o Internet-Draft announcements,
  207.    o IESG last calls,
  208.    o IESG protocol and document actions, and
  209.    o RFC announcements.

  218. The IETF discussion list is open, and therefore has a wide range of

  226. An archive of mail sent to the IETF lists is available via anonymous FTP

  230. associated ``-request'' address (e.g., to join the list@listhost list,
  231. send a message to list-request@listhost).  Never send a subscription
  232. message to the list itself.
