  2. As of March 1993 IESG adopted the following policy on the scheduling of
  3. BOFs during IETF meetings.
  4.

  6. 1. All BOFs wishing to meet during an IETF meeting must have the approval 
  7.    of the appropriate area director.  A list of current area directors
  8.    can be found in /ietf/1iesg.txt on ftp.ietf.cnri.reston.va.us.  The
  9.    Secretariat will NOT schedule or allocate time slots without the
  10.    explicit approval of the area director.  Please send a courtesy copy
  11.    of your request to agenda@ietf.cnri.reston.va.us and ask the area
  12.    director to copy this address on the decision.

  16.    NOTE: ALL requests for BOFs must be accompanied by BOF Description and
  17.          Agenda, and the relevant Area Directors must be copied. The
  18.          Secretariat should ONLY schedule complete requests (pending AD
  19.          approval)

  22. 2. The purpose of a BOF is to conduct a single, brief discussion or to
  23.    ascertain interest and establish goals for a working group. All BOF
  24.    organizers are required to submit a brief written report of what
  25.    transpired during the BOF meeting, together with a roster of
  26.    attendees, to the IETF Secretariat for inclusion in the proceedings.

  28. 3. A BOF can only be held once (ONE slot at one IETF meeting).
  29.  
  30. 4. Under unusual circumstances an area director can allow a BOF to meet
  31.    for a second time. Typically, though not a requirement, this is to
  32.    develop a charter to be submitted to the IESG.

  34. 5. BOFs are not permitted to meet three times.
  35.  
  36. 6. Non-IETF groups wishing to participate in IETF meetings may hold a
  37.    BOF for single-event discussion, or may pursue creation of normal
  38.    IETF working groups for on-going interactions and disussions.  The
  39.    rules governing such BOFs are the same as for all other IETF BOFs
  40.    and working groups.

  42. 7. When necessary, working groups will be given priority for meeting
  43.    space over BOFs.
  44.  
  45. 8. Once scheduled, BOFs are handled like working groups with regard to 
  46.    the meeting and proceedings. We require minutes and an attendee roster 
  47.    for the proceedings.

  49. 9. BOF chairs are asked to send a brief announcement of the BOF to the
  50.    IETF list.
