  55. To run Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, your system must 
  56. meet the following minimum requirements:
  57.  
  58. - A 486 with a 66 MHz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  59.  
  60. - For Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98:
  61.   16 MB (megabytes) of RAM minimum
  62.  
  63.   For Microsoft Windows NT(R) 4:
  64.   32 MB of RAM minimum
  65.  
  66. - For Microsoft Windows NT 4: 
  67.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  68.  
  69. - Minimal install (browser-only):

  88. Disk Space Requirements for Internet Explorer 5 Installation
  89. ------------------------------------------------------------
  90. Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools Setup installs the majority 
  91. of its files to the drive where the Windows operating system is  
  92. installed, regardless of the installation location you chose. To free 
  93. up space on your hard disk in order to meet the Internet Explorer 5 
  94. disk-space installation requirements, you must free up space on 
  95. the drive where the Windows operating system is installed.
  96.  
  97. Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4
  98. ----------------------------------------
  99. After you install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 but before you 
  100. install Internet Explorer 5, you may see a message recommending 
  101. that you install one or both of the following Service Packs to 
  102. resolve known Year 2000 issues:
  103.  
  104.   Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1
  105.   Microsoft Data Access Components 2.0 Service Pack 1
  106.  
  107. Internet Explorer 5 resolves the Year 2000 issues addressed in these 
  108. Service Packs.
  109.  
  110.  
  111. SETUP
  112. =====
  113.  
  114. Installing Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools
  115. -------------------------------------------------
  116. Whether you choose to install over the network or download 
  117. the installation files to your hard disk, all Setup files are 
  118. copied to your hard disk. This allows you to reinstall more 
  119. quickly if necessary. If you want to reclaim the disk space, 
  120. you can remove the Setup directory by double-clicking the 
  121. Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel and then clicking 
  122. Internet Explorer 5. In the Microsoft Internet Explorer Setup 
  123. dialog box, click the Advanced button, and then click the option 
  124. named Remove The Folder Containing Internet Explorer Setup Files.
  125.  
  126. You cannot install Internet Explorer 5 to or run it from a 
  127. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  128. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  129. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 5 to a 
  130. UNC path.
  131.  
  132. Running Internet Explorer 5 on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  133. -------------------------------------------------------
  134. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install 
  135.       and uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes 
  136.       having administrative privileges the first time you 
  137.       start your computer after installing or uninstalling.
  138.  
  139. You must restart your computer after installing Internet 
  140. Explorer 5. This is also true for some add-on components.
  141.  
  142. For corporate deployment on Windows NT 4.0 machines, please make 
  143. sure that you have at least 4 MB of free registry space if 
  144. upgrading from Internet Explorer 2.0 or Internet Explorer 3.x, 
  145. and at least 2.5 MB of free registry space when upgrading from 
  146. Internet Explorer 4.x.
  147.  
  148. If you're running Internet Explorer 5 on Windows NT 4.0, you 
  149. must set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary 
  150. Internet Files folder (cache). The user must have write 
  151. permission in order for files to be stored in the Temporary 
  152. Internet Files folder.
  153.  
  154. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  155. you install Internet Explorer 5, you must specify when prompted 
  156. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  157. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to 
  158. update the registry:
  159.  
  160. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  161. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  162. 3. Click OK.
  163.  
  164. Installing Windows NT 4.0 SP3 or SP4 Over Internet Explorer 5
  165. -------------------------------------------------------------
  166. If you reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or 4 after Internet 
  167. Explorer 5 is installed on your computer, some components will 
  168. need to be re-registered. To do this, do the following:
  169.  
  170. 1. In Control Panel,double-click Add/Remove Programs
  171. 2. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  172. 3. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, 
  173.    and then click the Add/Remove button.
  174. 4. Click Repair Internet Explorer, and then click OK.
  175. 5. After the repair operation is complete, restart your computer.
  176.  
  177. Installing Over Windows 2000 Beta Releases
  178. ------------------------------------------
  179. This is not a supported configuration. Setup will appear 
  180. to run, but it will update the name of the browser without 
  181. updating the components. You cannot do a full installation 
  182. of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 components over Windows 2000 
  183. beta releases. Windows 2000 beta customers will receive updated 
  184. Internet Explorer components in the next beta release of 
  185. Windows 2000.
  186.  
  187. Running Internet Explorer 5 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  188. -----------------------------------------------------------
  189. If you are running Internet Explorer 5 on a computer that is
  190. set up to dual boot between two operating systems on the same 
  191. partition (for example, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0), and you 
  192. have configured the computer to share a single Program Files 
  193. folder, you may have problems with add-on components. Also, 
  194. when you uninstall an add-on component from either copy of 
  195. Internet Explorer 5, it will be removed from both of them without 
  196. updating the other operating system's installed components 
  197. information. These problems are because the add-on files are all 
  198. stored in the shared Program Files folder, but information about 
  199. installed add-on components is stored elsewhere.
  200.  
  201. Installing or Upgrading the Windows Desktop Update
  202. --------------------------------------------------
  203. To install or upgrade the Windows Desktop Update, you must 
  204. install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 before you install 
  205. Internet Explorer 5. 
  206.  
  207. If you have already installed Internet Explorer 5 and would 
  208. like to install the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the 
  209. following steps:
  210.  
  211. 1. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.
  212. 2. If Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 is not already installed on 
  213.    your computer, install it.
  214. 3. Install the Windows Desktop Update.
  215. 4. Reinstall Internet Explorer 5.
  216.  
  217. Installing Over Localized Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew Releases
  218. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  219. Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew require the corresponding localized 
  220. version of Internet Explorer 5. It is not possible to install 
  221. the English version of Internet Explorer over the localized 
  222. version of Windows 98. This restriction does not apply to 
  223. localized versions of Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
  224.  
  225. Installing Outlook Express 5 on Windows Terminal Server
  226. ---------------------------------------------------------
  227. Before installing Outlook Express 5 on Windows Terminal 
  228. Server, the administrator needs to set a compatibility flag 
  229. in the registry for the Outlook Express 5 setup program to 
  230. work correctly. To do this, carry out the following steps:
  231.  
  232. 1. Create this registry key:
  233.      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
  234.      Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications\setup50
  235.  
  236. 2. Set the following value under the new setup50 key (this value 
  237.    should be of type REG_DWORD): 
  238.     Flags = 0x108
  239.  
  240. Installing Internet Explorer 5 with Norton Protected 
  241. Recycle Bin Enabled
  242. ----------------------------------------------------
  243. It is recommended that you disable the Norton Protected Recycle 
  244. Bin while you install Internet Explorer 5, and that you empty 
  245. the Norton Protected Recycle Bin before you run Setup. Before 
  246. you empty the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, be sure that you 
  247. review its contents in case it contains any items you want to 
  248. recover safely. You can re-enable this feature after Internet 
  249. Explorer 5 Setup is complete.
  250.  
  251. This is recommended because Norton Protected Recycle Bin will 
  252. intercept the removal of temporary files that Setup is trying to 
  253. delete, and you could run out of free space on your hard disk if 
  254. your remaining free space is limited. This would cause Internet 
  255. Explorer Setup to appear locked. For instructions on disabling 
  256. and re-enabling the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, see the Norton 
  257. Utilities documentation.
  258.  
  259. Installing on Windows 98 with Novell IPX/IP client
  260. --------------------------------------------------
  261. If you are using Novell IPX/IP client with Windows 98, 
  262. you may experience problems if you install Internet 
  263. Explorer 5 from the Internet. If Setup appears to 
  264. become unresponsive, restart your computer. Setup 
  265. will continue and finish normally. To work around 
  266. this problem, try one of the following options:
  267.  
  268. - From the Internet, select the Download Only option, 
  269.   and then run and install Internet Explorer 5 normally.
  270.  
  271. - Install Internet Explorer 5 from a CD-ROM.
  272.  
  273. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools
  274. ---------------------------------------------------
  275. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools by 
  276. carrying out the following steps:
  277.  
  278. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  279. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools, and 
  280.    then click Add/Remove.
  281. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  282.  
  283. Uninstall for Internet Explorer 4.x Unavailable
  284. -----------------------------------------------
  285. Uninstall for Internet Explorer 4.x is unavailable when Internet 
  286. Explorer 5 is installed. The backup files for the version 4.x 
  287. uninstall are removed to back up files for version 5. You cannot 
  288. uninstall version 4.X after uninstalling version 5.
  289.  
  290.  
  291. ADDITIONAL ISSUES
  292. =================
  293.  
  294. Work Offline Dialog Box Appears If There Is No Internet 
  295. Connection
  296. -------------------------------------------------------
  297. If you do not have an active connection to the Internet and 
  298. the Never Dial A Connection option is selected, when you start 
  299. Internet Explorer you will see the following error message: 
  300. "Web page not available when offline." You will be prompted to 
  301. try again or work offline.
  302.  
  303. To be prompted to dial a connection:
  304. 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  305. 2. Click the Connections tab.
  306. 3. Click one of the following options:
  307.    Dial Whenever A Network Connection Is Not Present
  308.    - or -
  309.    Always Dial My Default Connection
  310. 4. Click OK or Apply.
  311.  
  312. FTP User Interface and Functionality
  313. ------------------------------------
  314. Internet Explorer 5 has an improved FTP user interface 
  315. when direct access to an FTP server is available. If you 
  316. discover an issue in the FTP user interface that blocks FTP 
  317. functionality, you can disable this feature on the Advanced 
  318. tab in the Internet Options dialog box.
  319.  
  320. The following functionality is not supported:
  321.  
  322. - Internet connection via CERN proxy or Web proxies
  323. - Connecting to VAX or VMS FTP servers
  324. - Using the browser from within a separate application or 
  325.   service
  326. - Copying from server to server
  327. - Drag and drop from an FTP server, but you can drag 
  328.   and drop to an FTP server
  329. - The Copy command on the Edit menu and context menus does 
  330.   not work for items on an FTP server, but you can copy local 
  331.   items and paste them on an FTP server
  332.  
  333. Outlook Express AutoSelect Feature
  334. ----------------------------------
  335. The AutoSelect feature requires that the corresponding language 
  336. support files are installed on your computer. You can obtain the 
  337. language support files from the Internet Explorer 5 Add-On 
  338. Components page. To turn the AutoSelect feature on or off, click 
  339. the View menu, point to Encoding, and then click Auto-Select.
  340.  
  341. Font Display Issues
  342. -------------------
  343. If you run a non-Far East language version of Windows NT 4.0 and 
  344. you have installed many large fonts, the system's ability to use 
  345. those fonts may be exceeded. If Far East language Web pages are 
  346. not displayed correctly, uninstall unnecessary fonts and then 
  347. try again. A future release of the Windows NT Service Pack will 
  348. contain a fix for this issue.
  349.  
  350. Non-English Characters in URLs and Queries
  351. ------------------------------------------
  352. Internet Explorer 5 uses a new standard to transmit non-English 
  353. addresses (URLs) to the server. URLs are now encoded in a character 
  354. encoding standard named UTF-8. If the server is running Microsoft 
  355. Internet Information Server 4 or later, the URLs will work as 
  356. expected. Many servers cannot process URLs encoded in UTF-8. To use 
  357. non-English characters in URLs with these servers, carry out the 
  358. following steps:
  359.  
  360. 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  361. 2. Click the Advanced tab.
  362. 3. Clear the Always Send URLs As UTF-8 check box.
  363.  
  364. The query part of URLs is transmitted in a form fully compatible 
  365. with Internet Explorer 4.
  366.  
  367. Internet Explorer 4.x Compatibility Mode
  368. ----------------------------------------
  369. The Internet Explorer 4.x compatibility option is useful to 
  370. Web developers who want to view and test their Web sites on 
  371. different versions of Internet Explorer using the same computer. 
  372. You may not be able to change all settings for the browser while 
  373. in this mode. When using the compatibility option, you should 
  374. change Internet Options through Control Panel, not through the 
  375. browser's Internet Options on the View menu.
  376.  
  377. "Show Related Links" Option
  378. ---------------------------
  379. Internet Explorer 5 Help refers to a "Show Related Sites" 
  380. option on the Tools menu. The correct name for this option 
  381. is "Show Related Links."
  382.  
  383. Windows Radio Toolbar
  384. ---------------------
  385. Internet Explorer 5 includes a Windows Radio toolbar that 
  386. allows streaming radio playback. By default, the toolbar is 
  387. not displayed when the browser is started. To display the 
  388. toolbar whenever the browser is started, carry out the 
  389. following steps:
  390.  
  391. 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options
  392. 2. Click the Advanced tab
  393. 3. In the Multimedia area, click the Always Show 
  394.    Internet Explorer Radio Bar check box
  395.  
  396. Changing the Language of Menus and Dialog Boxes
  397. -----------------------------------------------
  398. Changing the language used in menus and dialog boxes may not work 
  399. with all display adapters. If you see blank menus or dialog boxes 
  400. after changing the language, there are two options:
  401.  
  402. - Change the resolution of your display adapter.
  403. - Upgrade the driver for your display adapter to a newer 
  404.   version. Contact the manufacturer of your display adapter
  405.   for information on updated drivers.
  406.  
  407. AutoComplete Options
  408. --------------------
  409. If you do not want AutoComplete to suggest matches for 
  410. certain sensitive information, you have several options:
  411.  
  412. - You can delete a specific AutoComplete entry by highlighting it 
  413.   in the AutoComplete drop-down list and pressing DELETE.
  414. - If you would like to delete a user name/password combination
  415.   on a login page, delete the user name; the password will 
  416.   be deleted with it.
  417. - If you would like to clear all form or password information, 
  418.   click the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the 
  419.   Content tab. Click AutoComplete, and then click Clear Forms or 
  420.   Clear Passwords.
  421.

  423. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  424. =========================
  425.  
  426. Outlook Express Address Book Digital ID with Outlook 98 
  427. Installation
  428. -------------------------------------------------------
  429. If Microsoft Outlook(R) 98 and Outlook Express are installed, 
  430. the Address Book is shared. You cannot add a digital signature to  
  431. shared Address Book entries. To work around this, carry out the 
  432. following steps:
  433.  
  434. 1. In the Address Book, click the Tools menu, and then click 
  435.    Options. 
  436. 2. Click Do Not Share. 
  437.  
  438. This removes the shared Address Book and allows the addition 
  439. of a digital signature to all Address Book entries.
  440.  
  441. Microsoft Office 2000 PowerPoint Files
  442. ----------------------------
  443. If you install Internet Explorer 5 as part of Microsoft 
  444. Office(R) 2000, and then uninstall Internet Explorer 5, Microsoft 
  445. PowerPoint may be unable to open certain files. To correct this, 
  446. reinstall Internet Explorer 5.
  447.  
  448. Office 2000 Excel Files Saved as HTML
  449. -------------------------------------
  450. A spreadsheet generated in Microsoft Excel and saved as HTML can 
  451. be viewed in Internet Explorer 5. Internet Explorer 5 does not 
  452. currently allow the spreadsheet to be saved as HTML from within 
  453. the browser. To edit the spreadsheet, use Excel to open the 
  454. original HTML file.
  455.  
  456. Visual Studio 6.0
  457. -----------------
  458. There are some known issues when you have Microsoft Visual 
  459. Studio(R) 6.0 and Internet Explorer 5 installed on the same 
  460. computer. These issues are resolved with Microsoft Visual 
  461. Studio 6.0 SP3. If you are running Visual Studio 6.0, it is 
  462. recommended that you upgrade to SP3 as soon as it is available 
  463. at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/default.asp.
  464.  
  465. DirecPC 2.0
  466. -----------
  467. After installing Internet Explorer 5 on a computer running 
  468. DirecPC 2.0, you may receive an error message when starting 
  469. the DirecPC software. To correct this problem, contact Hughes 
  470. Network Systems to obtain an updated version of the DirecPC 
  471. software.
  472.  
  473. BackOffice Small Business Server
  474. --------------------------------
  475. Users of BackOffice Small Business Server should upgrade 
  476. to Small Business Server 4.5 before installing Internet 
  477. Explorer 5. Without the upgrade, the SBS management console 
  478. will flicker with each screen transition. Increasing the 
  479. number of colors helps the problem but does not resolve it.
  480.  
  481. Logitech Internet Keyboard
  482. --------------------------
  483. Certain versions of the "Key Commander" software that ship 
  484. with the Logitech Internet Keyboard are not compatible with 
  485. Internet Explorer 5.  Please check with Logitech Customer 
  486. Support for an updated version, or search their Web site for 
  487. for more information at http://www.logitech.com.
  488.  
  489. Diamond Video Drivers
  490. ---------------------
  491. If you download Diamond video drivers from the Diamond Web site and
  492. install them over Internet Explorer 5, your system may be unable to 
  493. restart, due a critical system file being replaced. There are two options 
  494. for addressing this issue:
  495.  
  496. Before you install these drivers:
  497.   1. Make a backup copy of the file Comctl32.dll found in 
  498.      the Windows\System or \Winnt\System32 folder (the system folder).
  499.   2. Install the Diamond video drivers.
  500.   3. Restart your computer by using a bootable floppy disk.
  501.   4. After the restart is complete, copy the backup version of
  502.      Comctl32.dll to the system folder, overwriting the existing 
  503.      version of the file.
  504.   5. Remove the disk from the floppy disk drive, and restart the
  505.      computer again. 
  506.  
  507. If the drivers have been installed:
  508.   1. Restart your computer by using a bootable floppy disk.
  509.   2. At the MS-DOS prompt, change directories to the folder containing 
  510.      the Internet Explorer 5 files. If these files were downloaded, the 
  511.      default location is C:\Windows Update Setup Files; or, on the CD-ROM,
  512.      choose the IE5 folder under the correct operating system.
  513.   3. Extract the Comctl32.dll file by using the following command 
  514.      line: 
  515.  
  516.      For Window 95 or Windows 98:
  517.      extract /e /l c:\temp setupw95.cab comctl32.dll
  518.      
  519.      For Windows NT:
  520.      extract /e /l c:\temp setupnt.cab comctl32.dll
  521.  
  522.   4. Copy the extracted Comctl32.dll file from the C:\Temp folder 
  523.      into the Windows\System or \Winnt\System32 folder (the system folder),
  524.      overwriting the existing version of the file.
  525.   5. Remove the disk from the floppy disk drive, and restart the computer
  526.      again. 
  527.  
  528. Internet Explorer ActiveX Tree and Pop-up Menu Controls
  529. -------------------------------------------------------
  530. During the installation of Internet Explorer 5, the Setup program removes
  531. earlier versions of the ActiveX Tree control and Pop-up menu controls due 
  532. to compatibility issues with this version of the browser. Programs that rely 
  533. on these controls may require reinstallation of the controls to restore 
  534. functionality.
