  3.   TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2
  4.  
  5.         This file contains information explaining the content of the
  6.         Read Me folder, an overview of the product and its kits,
  7.         and some information on how to order additional TCP/IP kits.
  8.  
  9.         The order of information in this file is:
  10.  
  11.          1. Completing the installation of the Base Kit.
  12.          2. What is in the Read Me folder?
  13.          3. Product Kit overview.
  14.          4. How to Order TCP/IP.

  16.   1. Completing the installation of the Base Kit.
  17.  
  18.         The README file on Disk #1 of the IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 for
  19.         OS/2 Base Kit contains Pre-Installation instructions that
  20.         should have been followed if the following are true:
  21.  
  22.              1. You have just installed the TCP/IP Base Kit.
  23.              2. You had a previous version of TCP/IP installed.
  24.              3. You installed to a different directory than where the
  25.                 previous version was installed.
  26.  
  27.         If all three of these hold true, and you did not follow the
  28.         Pre-Installation steps described in the README on Disk #1 of
  29.         the Base Kit, then you should complete the following steps:
  30.  
  31.             1. Copy all of the files (including all of the
  32.                subdirectories) from the previously installed TCP/IP's
  33.                ETC directory to the newly installed TCP/IP Version 2.0
  34.                for OS/2 Base Kit's ETC directory.  Example:
  35.  
  36.                [C:\]xcopy /s %etc%\*.* <TCPIP_Install_Path>\etc
  37.  
  38.             2. Update the line in your CONFIG.SYS which contains the
  39.                command to SET the ETC environment variable.  This
  40.                should be updated so that it points to the ETC
  41.                directory off of the path where you installed the new
  42.                copy of the TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2 Base Kit.
  43.                Example:
  44.  
  45.                SET ETC=<TCPIP_Install_Path>\ETC
  46.  
  47.             3. Remove any references to the old TCP/IP's DLL directory
  48.                from the LIBPATH statement.
  49.  
  50.             4. Remove any references to the old TCP/IP's directories
  51.                from the following list of environment variables:
  52.  
  53.                SET BOOKSHELF=
  54.                SET READIBM=
  55.                SET HELP=
  56.                SET PATH=
  57.  
  58.             5. Shutdown and reboot your system.
  59.

  61.   2. What is in the Read Me folder?
  62.  
  63.         This Read Me folder contains icons for any readme files that
  64.         accompany TCP/IP kits that you might have installed (note that
  65.         not all kits have readme files).  Refer to the kit-specific
  66.         readme files for last-minute information on a particular kit.

  68.   3. Product Kit overview.
  69.  
  70.         IBM Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  71.         Version 2.0 for OS/2 provides new and enhanced TCP/IP functions
  72.         for the OS/2 environment.
  73.  
  74.         To provide ordering flexibility, TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2
  75.         is packaged in several kits.  Following is a list of kits
  76.         including a brief description of each:

  78.           1.  Base Kit
  79.           2.  Network File System Kit
  80.           3.  MultiMail Kit
  81.           4.  Domain Name Server Kit
  82.           5.  DOS/Windows Access Kit
  83.           6.  Extended Networking Kit
  84.           7.  NetBIOS
  85.           8.  Programmer's Toolkit
  86.           9.  X Window System Server Kit
  87.          10.  X Window System Client Kit
  88.          11.  OSF/Motif Kit
  89.          12.  Applications Kit
  90.          13.  Total Kit

  92.         Note:  You can install the component kits either on the TCP/IP
  93.         Base Kit or on another product that provides the necessary
  94.         protocol stack.

  97.         1. Base Kit
  98.  
  99.  
  100.               Provides the protocol stack necessary to support all the
  101.               functions of TCP/IP for OS/2.  It also provides a base set of
  102.               applications, including Telnet, FTP, Sendmail, and Rexec.  It
  103.               also provides network management capabilities based on the
  104.               simple network management protocol (SNMP).
  105.  
  106.               New in this release:  Workplace Shell integration, NewsReader/2
  107.               (an internet news reader), performance enhancements to serial
  108.               line internet protocol (SLIP) and Telnet, enhancements to the
  109.               SNMP agent, and separate key mapping tables for Telnet and FTP.

  112.         2. Network File System Kit
  113.  
  114.  
  115.               Provides the Network File System client and server, which enable
  116.               you to share drive resources across networks as if the resources
  117.               were local.
  118.  
  119.               New in this release:  NFS client provides file-locking.

  122.         3. MultiMail Kit
  123.  
  124.  
  125.               Enables you to transmit multimedia messages in conformance with
  126.               the MIME RFC 1341 multimedia mail standard.  In addition to
  127.               plain text, it supports a wide variety of multimedia data,
  128.               including enriched text, images, audio, simple video clips, and
  129.               binary files.

  131.               This new kit will be available soon.

  134.         4. Domain Name Server Kit
  135.  
  136.  
  137.               Aids in the use and management of your network by allowing you
  138.               to assign symbolic names to internet addresses.
  139.  
  140.               This is a new kit.

  143.         5. DOS/Windows Access Kit
  144.  
  145.  
  146.               Enables DOS applications written to the IBM TCP/IP
  147.               Version 2.1 for DOS programming interfaces, and
  148.               Windows*** applications written to the Windows Sockets
  149.               API Version 1.0 or Version 1.1 specifications to run in
  150.               an OS/2 virtual DOS machine on top of TCP/IP Version 2.0
  151.               for OS/2.

  153.               This is a new kit.

  155.  
  156.         6. Extended Networking Kit
  157.  
  158.  
  159.               Enables you to install and configure an X.25 or SNALINK
  160.               interface.
  161.  
  162.               New in this release:  support for IP over SNA LU6.2.

  165.         7. NetBIOS
  166.  
  167.  
  168.               Provides a TCP/IP transport layer for NetBIOS applications,
  169.               enabling NetBIOS applications to communicate over a TCP/IP
  170.               internet with the native NetBIOS product.
  171.  
  172.               NetBIOS applications are limited to a local area network
  173.               (LAN); but with TCP/IP for OS/2, NetBIOS applications can
  174.               communicate over both a LAN and a WAN.
  175.  
  176.               The NetBIOS installation process does not use the CID
  177.               architecture.
  178.  
  179.               New in this release:  compliance with RFC 1001/1002.

  182.         8. Programmer's Toolkit
  183.  
  184.  
  185.               Provides routines for application programming in TCP/IP for
  186.               OS/2.  These routines include sockets, RPCs, the File Transfer
  187.               Protocol (FTP) application programming interface (API), and the
  188.               Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) distributed
  189.               programming interface.
  190.  
  191.               New in this release:  32-bit APIs and enhancements to SNMP.

  194.         9. X Window System Server Kit
  195.

  197.               Enables you to display and control X Window System client
  198.               applications in an OS/2 Presentation Manager windowed session.
  199.               Because the X Window System server uses OS/2 Presentation
  200.               Manager as the window manager, it supports all of the keyboard,
  201.               display, and pointer devices that are supported by OS/2
  202.               Presentation Manager.
  203.  
  204.               New in this release:  PMX is now a 32-bit application that
  205.               complies with X11R5.

  208.         10. X Window System Client Kit
  209.

  211.               Consists of two components:  the X Window System Client
  212.               Runtime Services and the X Window System Client Programmer's
  213.               Toolkit.

  215.               The Runtime Services provide the dynamic link libraries (DLLs)
  216.               that enable users to run X Window System applications on OS/2.
  217.               The Programmer's Toolkit provides the standard X Window System
  218.               application programming interfaces (APIs) from the MIT
  219.               Consortium that enable users to create X Window System
  220.               applications for OS/2 or to port X Window applications from
  221.               other platforms.  The X Window System Client Programmer's
  222.               Toolkit requires the TCP/IP Programmer's Toolkit.

  224.               This is a new kit.

  227.         11. OSF/Motif Kit
  228.

  230.               Consists of two components:  the OSF/Motif Runtime Services
  231.               and the OSF/Motif Programmer's Toolkit.

  233.               The Runtime Services provide the dynamic link libraries (DLLs)
  234.               that enable users to run OSF/Motif applications on OS/2.  The
  235.               Programmer's Toolkit provides the standard OSF/Motif widgets and
  236.               header files that enable users to create OSF/Motif applications
  237.               on OS/2.  The OSF/Motif Kit requires the X Window Client Kit and
  238.               the Programmer's Toolkit.

  243.         12. Applications Kit

  246.               Provides the TCP/IP for OS/2 applications included in the Base
  247.               Kit without the underlying TCP/IP protocol stack, allowing you
  248.               to install the functions of the Base TCP/IP Kit on a comparable
  249.               stack.

  254.         13. Total Kit

  257.               TCP/IP for OS/2 also provides a Total Kit, which provides the
  258.               most often used functions of TCP/IP for OS/2.  The Total Kit
  259.               consists of the Base Kit, the Network File System Kit, the
  260.               Extended Networking Kit, and the X Window System Server Kit.
