ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. General SNMPTRAP Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The SNMP Trap monitor displays SNMP traps that are sent to your system by SNMP
agents running on other systems. These SNMP agents must be configured to make
your system a destination for SNMP trap information.
An SNMP trap is an event notification that is sent by an SNMP agent or
subagent. Examples of such events are
o coldStart: Signifies that the SNMP agent is initializing itself such that MIB
objects can be altered. One case of this is a workstation reboot.
o warmStart: Signifies that the SNMP agent is initializing itself such that MIB
objects are not altered.
o linkDown: Indicates that an interface has changed from the up to the down
state.
o linkUp: Indicates that an interface has changed from the down to the up
state.
o authenticationFailure: Indicates that an SNMP message has been received that
is not properly authenticated. For the OS/2 SNMP agent, authentication means
that both the community name and source address have been verified.
o egpNeighborLoss: Indicates that an EGP peer has been marked down.
o enterpriseSpecific: Indicates that some other, privately defined, event has
occurred. For example, using the SNMP agent DPI interface, SNMP subagents
can be created with enterprise specific traps.
When an SNMP trap notification is received, if the trap monitor is active it
will display the text of the notification. Included in the notification is the
community name and IP address of the agent reporting the trap, the object ID of
the agent that generated the trap (this indicates what kind of agent sent the
trap), the trap type, and the timestamp.
Only one instance of SNMPTRAP can be active on your workstation at any one
time.
Trap monitoring can be turned on or off, and trap information can be logged to
a file.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Help for Listen for traps ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
When the SNMP trap monitor is started, it immediately begins listening for
traps. This can be turned on or off by clicking on Listen for traps. A check
next to Listen for traps indicates that listening is on. Listen for traps is
found in the Session menu of the SNMP trap monitor menu bar.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Help for Clear ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Clear function clears the SNMP trap monitor window. Clear is found in the
Session menu of the SNMP trap monitor menu bar.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Help for Log traps to a file ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This option, in the Options menu of the SNMP trap monitor menu bar, turns SNMP
trap logging on or off. A check mark next to the option indicates that logging
is on. When logging is active, all incoming trap information is written to the
file SNMPTRAP.LOG, in the ETC subdirectory of the workstation.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Help for Save Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This menu item saves the current state of SNMP trap options, so that when the
SNMP trap monitor is next started, it starts in the same state. At present, the
only option that is saved is the state of trap logging.
