LIFE
Version 2.0
(C) 1994 G.Stretton. Australia.
Try 'restore last screen' first thing after you first unzip the program
to see what I was playing with just before I zipped this up for distribution.
To bypass the introduction screen, press <space> a couple of times.
Registered users can disable the introduction screen with Show_Intro in
LIFE.INI.
After you have registered the program you can delete the READ.ME, PRINT.ME,
LIFE.DOC, TUTORIAL.DOC and, if you no longer need it, the LIFE.HLP files to
save space.
The unregistered version requires all these files to be in the same directory
as LIFE.EXE.
LIFE requires a VGA compatible display, 386sx or later CPU and an MS mouse
compatible mouse and driver.
(Tested with microsoft mouse driver version 8.2 and DOS 6.2)
Pressing <F1> at either menu will display help.
History:
Version 2.0
<F1> Help now works in unregistered version, however save doesn't.
2.0 is a *MAJOR* rewrite of the engine that drives the program. The speed
has been considerably increased!
The main added features are symmetrical fills, two types, in main and edit
windows, configuration of various things with LIFE.INI, insert or delete
a row and/or column in the edit window and massive speed increases.
Also added to this version, as promised, are functions to save and restore
patterns from disk. This section will be updated to a more efficient method
if interest warrants.
More new bits are, help available on unregistered version, external
process allow your own programs to draw starting patterns and retrieve
results from LIFE. Shell to DOS for file control etc.
Did I mention the speed increase?
Version 2.0 requires a 386sx or later processor.
Other new features are, save and restore color selections, noises, single
stepping, extra scrolling functions, more informative stats section,
and lots of lovely speed, or have I said that?
How fast? Well, on a 33MHz 486, for a single diagonal glider, I get over
1000 generations per second, fast enuf? (Yes, that is per second).
More new for version two. A wrap mode allows your cells to inhabit a
the surface of a toroid. Gliders can circumnavigate their world, if
that's what you do on a do-nut. Paste now works in edit section.
Even more, a new macro function allows you to record a series of
keystrokes and/or mouse movements and then play them back just like
you were pressing all those keys again. Really eases a complicated
series of image manipulations.
Version 1.1
First release.
Is there anybody out there?
