- Subject: (orbital) Yet Another Lurker Drawn Out (YALDO)
-
- Ahh... Seems like we're all comming out of the woodwork lately, eh? ;)
-
- I've lurked on this list for god-knows-how-long and of the several lists I
- get (dirtylist included) this one's been the most 'useless' of them all...
- Until this little flame war began, that is.
-
- As Wouter said, the flame war started over Napster and MP3's.. Oddly
- enough, that's how most of us lurkers probably came into contact with
- Orbital in the first place, and it's interesting to see people bicker about
- it. It was a wasted 10-20 minutes in my life reading those things, but at
- least it was entertaining.
-
- All of it kinda reminds me of my days SysOp'ing a local BBS. Forums -
- entire confrences - would go dead for months on end... Then, someone would
- start a flame war, someitmes on purpose. A few months later, the forum
- would meander back on topic or somewhere near it.. Anyway, to get to my
- point, I see neither Brendan nor the people responding to his provocations
- to be a problem. It's all part of the evolution of the fragile community of
- a mailing list.
-
- This Orbital list has much less of a community than the DirtyList, which
- has always perplexed me, but maybe this discussion and will help drag the
- community out of the woodwork and get some interesting conversations going!
-
- I hope it will... 'cause there sure is alot to talk about.
-
- Later,
- Erik

-
- In the August issue of Muzik magazine (not sure if this is the US or what, I
- don't go to the bookstore often) Alison said this about Orbital:
-
- "nice blokes and a pleasure to work with, but not where I'm coming from at
- all"
-
- I found it interesting because they make some beautiful music with her
- voice.. I guess she worked with Tricky too but I haven't heard much Tricky
- other than one music video or two that I don't remember.

-
- imusic.com mailing list reports:
-
- A new Pumpkins tribute cd in the works
-
-
- As Chicago pop band The Smashing Pumpkins prepare to bow out of the music
- scene with one last tour of the major cities this fall, imusic.com has
- learned of a compilation tribute album set to be released next year,
- possibly
- in mid-Spring. Such luminaries as Depeche Mode, Simon Le Bon, PJ Harvey and
- even R&B diva Missy Elliot are set to record tracks in upcoming months in
- homage to the Pumpkins, who recently announced that they would split at the
- years end. The expected tracklisting is as follows:
-
- 1979: New Order
- Love: Filter
- Bullet With Butterfly Wings: Placebo
- 33: R.E.M.
- Crestfallen: The Human League
- The Everlasting Gaze (instrumental interpretation): The Aphex Twin
- Beautiful: Missy Elliot
- Tonight, Tonight: PJ Harvey
- Take Me Down: Ric Ocasek
- Ugly: Chris Cornell
- Luna: Tricky feat. Beth Gibbons
- Sweet,Sweet: Robert Smith
- Tristessa: Nick Cave feat. Orbital
- Perfect: Johnny Marr & Simon Le Bon
- With Every Light: Depeche Mode
-
- This album will of course be in addition to the next Pumpkin's LP, the
- follow
- up to this year's MACHINA/the machines of God, which the band are currently
- finishing off in a Chicago recording studio. It is not yet known what lable
- the tribute CD will be distributed under.

-
- i wasn't going to respond anymore on this topic, but since i feel somewhat
- responsible (and probably threw the most vehement flame), and also since
- i think it was largely misinterpreted, i guess i'll chime in. (ha! that
- was an orbital reference!)
-
- > Should Brendan be booted? No. This should be a free, unrestricted
- > medium.
-
- i never said or implied that brendan should be booted. i was hoping (this
- was obviously unrealistic of me) that he would realize what an arse he was
- being and leave voluntarily. what i posted was something like an impolite
- suggestion to that effect.
-
- > Why create a scene? Why resort to foul language? Would you really do
- > this in a physical public place, with strangers' heads all turning in
- > your direction to see what all the fuss was about?
-
- um, actually, yes. and i'm not by any means an aggressive or violent
- person. but if i was with a group of people, and someone turned to someone
- else and called them a "fucking jackass" with little or no provocation, i
- do believe i would turn to them and say something along the lines of "fuck
- you - why don't you leave?" if people treated this forum more like a group
- of actual individuals with feelings, we wouldn't be having these problems.
- but in brenden's case - well, let's just say that i feel strongly that
- there are some outbursts that should not go unchecked. perhaps my outburst
- should have been checked as well - that's up to you guys. but in my mind
- at least, what i did was for the good of the community. sorry if it just
- contributed to the problem - i was pissed, which isn't a good excuse i
- know, but i just really would like this list to go back to something like
- it was, say, 4 years ago. i used to learn a lot from this forum.
-
- oh, and i would like to echo what someone else said about being on the
- digest - it's pretty hard to filter emails that way. i'm considering
- switching to the regular version just so i can filter out brendan - how
- sad is that?!?
-
- > At least Brendan has something to say behind any extreme words he may use.
-
- hmmm... sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it. and i'm not
- always willing to look through the bullshit to find the meaning.
-
- > So, this shows that it's not Brendan that's the problems, it's all of
- > us.
-
- this is true to an extent. but, and i'm saying this from experience, i
- think a lot of people here are more reluctant to post stuff with brenden
- around. when you're hanging out with your friends somewhere, and there's a
- guy that always dominates the conversation with bullshit and negativity,
- doesn't it make you reluctant to talk? doesn't it ruin the vibe? let me
- know if it's just me.
-
- now, a sincere word of apology to brendan. i understand that you probably
- think me and others on this list are being unfair to you - if this email
- makes you angry, which i think it will, i'm sorry - being backed into a
- corner is never fun, and if i were in your situation i would definitely be
- angry. but the last thing i want to do (though it probably doesn't seem
- like it, which is why i'm throwing this paragraph in here) is start
- another bout of flaming. i want to call a truce, the only stipulation
- being, from now on, please THINK before you post. think about who is going
- to read it and how they might react. if you think it might piss them off,
- either change your language to be less confrontational, don't post, or
- post off-list. now of course you can tell me to fuck off if you want, i
- can't stop you, but if you do so, please do it off-list. that's all. sorry
- i attacked you. hey, i don't really like moby either. (but have you heard
- "ambient"? it's actually pretty good.)
-
- one more thing i wanted to mention: on-topicness. i guess i sort of
- over-stated what i was trying to say before. i don't want this to be an
- all-orbital, all-the-time list. yes, that would be boring. but also an
- impossibility, as has been shown time and time again, so i'm not worried
- about it. what pissed me off was an entire digest that wasn't even talking
- about music - not even NAPSTER, for chrissakes - it was about computer
- shit. gnu or whatever. now THAT is off-topic, and should be taken
- off-list.
-
- > What the hell happened? We have people sending 5 word posts to the list, and
- > and that's basically the way it's been for a LONG time now. Wake up!
-
- hey, i never send 5 word posts to the list. but i bet you wish i did!
-

- Be informed! Darren Emerson has left Underworld, and the duo that still is
- in Underworld (Rick Smith, Karl Hyde) are releasing in september a live

- What's sad is that you can't even read the messages I put out. It's not that I
- spew out "FUCK YOU!!! I HATE YOU ALL!!! YOU ALL SUCK MY BALLS!!!". Even when
- I flame, I have some intelligent shit to say along with it.

-
- Vibe? This isn't a damn rave. It's just people trying to have a conversation.
- Don't be afraid of me. Just post some shit and I might argue. I'll try to be

- Ok, fine. I usually don't post off-list because somebody might want to jump
- into a good conversation.
-
- And yes, I've heard Ambient. It sucks, IMO.

-
- It started out as Napster, then led into GNU shit. Just let conversations flow
- the way they flow. After all, there was multiple people (not just two)
- interested in the thing.
-
- > worst orbital song: desert storm. that should get some discussion going!
-
- The Moby Speed Freak song. Totally different style then what Orbital really
- is. Of course, the first album kinda sucked anyway.
-

- Hello,
- My name is Mike and I run the Albuquerque, NM based music project,
- ShoestringCowboy. I am trying to widen our fan base and get some feedback
- from different people who like and understand electronic music on a
- technical level. If it would not be too much trouble, it would really help
- me out if you could listen to a song or two and tell me what you think. The
- url is www.mp3.com/shoestringcowboy . Thanks alot.
